Bead board on the ceiling?

Has anyone done this? I like the looks in this picture - actually I like bead board period, but never seen it on the ceiling.

We have doug fir beadboard on the ceilings in our LR, k itchen and pool room, the other rooms in the house have pine ceilings. We like them a lot, but then again, we're not real fans of d rywall.

My aunt did white painted beadboard on the ceiling in her sitting room and it's absolutely gorgeous.

I have a beadboard ceiling in the kitchen that I absolutely love, although DH still reminds me about what a PITA it was to install. I tell him SOOO worth it. In fact, we talked about it just this morning. I was gone all day Saturday, and he sneakily installed those ugly firestop canisters under my vent hood. I told him before I didn't want them to be seen so I forbade him to put them in. This morning at the cooktop, what did I find tucked up securely out of site? I'm OK with his installation because you can't see them unless you put your head under the hood. He called me later and I gave him a hard time about his sneaky project. He said far better to have $300 worth of damage from a cooking fire than many thousands, and what would my ceiling look like? Gotta love a safety conscious hubby. He's not worried about my inattentive cooking, but that of our teenagers. If I were to do my kitchen again, this ceiling would be on my must have list.

I will state for the record that beadboard ceilings are really evocative of a bygone time. I like beadboard ceilings, especially on porches. I see why people like and appreciate them. The practical problem is that dust will filter through the cracks unless the material has been taken down and cleaned (or new stuff gotten) and it is applied to the joists with a barrier sheeting (plastic or tyvek) to prevent new attic dust from accumulating and filtering through the cracks. "But just caulk the cracks!" you protest. Ah, but that IMO really spoils the look of the beads. You can never use so little caulk so that it looks right, because that is not enough caulk to do the job of stretching with the seasonal movement. An adequate amount of caulk, then, looks really bad in the joints and loses the historic look. It looks little better than beaded plywood, which is super-yuk. If you went up into your attic, and cleaned out every seam with a vacuum and brush, and tapping to get the dust out now, before finishing and habitation, and then insulated with sprayed foam, which will seal it 'til doomsday, you will still get some dust filtering through, but if it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me. And if it does bother you, you can then caulk (yuk) the worst-offending seams. Casey

We had a pipe burst last month and the resulting mitigation work meant that our humidity levels were dry as a bone, even for our Upper Midwest winter climate, for several weeks. I've noticed larger exposed seams in our board and batten, wood floors, and other areas. I've worked with painted woodwork in the past, and, like Jaysmom, I wouldn't use primer as part of a temporary fix. If it bothers you that much, just fill the seams with paint. But, you know, wood floors, moulding, and other wood millwork are going to expand and contract with humidity levels. As eandhl notes, this is proof positive that you have the real deal!

graywings, How true! "Beadboard is a lovely touch in the right house. But otherwise it is a fad - beadboard is to 2012 what wallpaper border was to 1990". I love the 3 1/4" or larger tongue in groove board, like the old pine paneling looked, and you can still get that for beadboard, but it sure is expensive. We were going to get some wider tongue and groove for our kitchen in the Virginia house, but we had to buy a minimum of 900 feet to get the one we wanted, and were not ready for that much commitment to beadboard! lol We had seen it in a house that was being built applied on a tall wall going up 2 stories (w/10' ceilings) and it was a round wall. It was gorgeous, and we fell in love with it. The house being on the shore it was so appropriate for the look of the install and the feel of the house.

I love the look. I already have beadboard all over my kitchen, so that probably would have been overkill to put it on my ceiling as well.

BUT I still would have loved loved LOVED it. Hubby, having to be the one to put it up, would probably disagree. LOL.

Pinchme has beadboard wallpaper on her ceiling that looks like the real stuff. With the missing threads, it may be hard to find it. I'll take a look and find it for you, if I can.

Sandyponder, where can I see the rest of your kitchen? It looks so charming!

I was going to do it on the vaulted part of our ceiling, but it ended up on the cost cutting floor. We might add it later.

I have saved a lot of photos of variously paneled ceilings ...

I did the wallpaper beadboard on the advice of farmhousebound. EVERYONE comments on it. Favorably, I must add! It's the first thing everyone notices. I never did get my albums organized but if you have the time you can look through them and find the pictures that work for you.
It's pretty cheap, all things considered. And you could always put up one roll and if you didn't like it, take it down.

Some of what you think is beadboard might also be known as "tongue and groove" ceiling treatment. I know that the T&G that we used had one side that had 1/2 width stripes and the other side had the wider full-width groove. I would assume that the beadboard is cheaper than the T&G, as I seemed to have paid a fortune for the darn thing.

Ours is tongue and groove pine rather than beadboard, but it has a similar effect. I love the texture it provides. I will say that, with any wood ceiling choice, you have to be much, much more careful about details such as lighting placement. Making changes is really not an option, because you can't patch a hole in wood as easily as you can patch a drywall or plaster ceiling.

I have beadboard on my ceiling. We added an edge with moulding and put in lights. I liked this option better because the beadboard did not get cut up with recessed lights. Here is the link. Scroll down to see everything.
