We set ours at 78° most of the time but when it's really humid we go down to 76°.

The hotter it is outside, the warmer I like it inside..to minimize the shock, don't ya know. Hence, when I'm here alone it's usually at 76; when DH is here he wants it at 72. BTW, it's been in the mid to high 90s this week. Too hot, too early!

76-78. We don't want to feel like we're in a meat locker. As long as it takes the humidity from the air and it's comfortable, we're good.

Set on 75 here that seems to be ok for me and have ceiling fan running in all the rooms, it has been very hot here in the 90s everyday.

Usually 76, but it's been so hot the air runs constantly it seems. So I turned it up to 78 and turned on the ceiling fans. I hear that air turn on and see $$$ signs! When we leave for the mountains, we'll turn it to 82. We're all getting a $9 a month increase this summer curtesy of our electric company.

Until this year I liked it around 80, now I find 75 is more comfortable. The heat seems to be bothering me a lot more these days.

I like it set at 70, but we usually keep it set at 73-74. We set the heat at 64-65 in the winter, so at least we're consistent in liking it cool!

When we are home, it is set at 70. At 76 when we leave in the morning. It takes forever for a house to cool to 70 in the desert, if you set it much higher.

We have never used the heat in the houses we have lived in. Ever. So that is set to OFF.

We keep it set at 78. At 11 pm it automatically shuts down and will not run again till 7 am no matter how warm the house gets. We get along with ceiling fans while it is in off mode. We run ceiling fans most of the time along with the ac if we are at home. We only open windows if the outside temp is below 76 and the humidity is less than 50%

We set ours at 78 and also have all the ceiling fans running. We don't turn it up or down at all and have found that it is most effecient that way.

We don't run our air much unless the humidity gets too bad, so ours is set at 84 or turned off completely. We rely on our ceiling fans.

77 degrees for summer/cooling and 68 for winter/heat.

Have mine set at 78 day and night....it's WAY too early to be running the AC in Delaware, BUT we are having a heat wave here in the northeast. Just had a part replaced in the heater, still under warranty thank goodness. Shouldn't need heat till October.

74 for the downstairs unit...76 for the upstairs unit...It's been over 90 degrees the last two days with about 30ish percent humidity...that's what kills me...I've been staying in the pool...

77 during the day and 73 at night...we like to sleep cool. Dean is in and out so much, that I hate to have it too cool, too much of a shock to the system..I think. I hate the thought that it is already on, but it is soooo humid today!

77 throughout the day and night. We don't have humidity to speak of here, so that temp with a ceiling fan seems to be adequate. Well, for me anyway. Sometimes when watching TV in the evening and the fan above me, I'll grab for a wrap. DH thinks I'm NUTS! :)

74 works best for me.

No air conditioning here....usually we don't need it. Nipomo, CA has the most 70 degree F days in the USA.
We live close enough to the ocean our open windows usually keep us comfortable.

HI folks , have been lurking here and now I have a question. We have a walk out ranch (I think is what it is called) House built into a hill. I work at home in the lower level so most of my area is underground. DH says it is best to leave the (central) ac running. I find that I am fine until at least 2 PM. The upper level can get up in the 80s if it does not run untill then. Like Patti all I can see is $$$$$$$$$ while it is running. DH likes it at 74 but somehow needs it at 76 or 78 in the winter??? Is it REALLY cheaper to let it run all day than to let the house heat up to say 80 then cool it down for late afternoon and evening when DH is home? Very hot and humid in West Michigan this week. I keep mine about 70 during the day but 68 at night because I like to sleep cool.Sometimes cooler during the day depending on the outside temperature.We have very little to no humidity.Our temperatures this week have been over 100 every day and people in and out so it has been set cooler.My A/C man says it takes more electricity to cool a house down after a hot day with no A/C on at all than to leave it on at a little higher temperature than you normally would set it.I've never tested that theory because mine is on 24/7 unless we are away for days at a time.When we go anywhere for days at a time I leave it set on 75 for the cat.(Yes,someone comes in and feeds her and cleans the litter box while I am gone).LOL

Ours is set a 75 right now, but it is really hot & extremely humid outside. When it's not as humid out we have it set at about 72. I can't sleep in the heat. I can turn it up a bit when we're at work during the day. (The dog doesn't seem to mind) but when we're home I like cool inside.

70 during the day and 68 at night. Ours is very old, and I don't think it works as good as a new one might. We should probably replace it soon, but my DH does not replace anything until it needs to be done.

Thanks for all the responses. I have never had air til we moved south.When we first moved here had it set at 68. Now , I am finding that 73 will work during the day , but man I need it cooler at night. Can't stand the house warm to sleep, have enough problems sleeping without adding heat to it. And Dh lays there with sheets and a blanket 12 months a year !! And I throw blanket off and put it on and throw it off and put it on.......

We keep it around 76 or 77 most of the time.. but when the house gets too hot I drop it to 75... we have fans in all the bedrooms and the family room.. that helps (just a note on the fans, they should be changed to counterclockwise in the summer)

Right now it's set at 80 and is running pretty steadily. Ceiling fans are running also. When the humdity goes up we might bump it down a degree or two but not much lower

I have a little window unit to take care of the whole house. When it has to run, it pretty much runs a lot. But it has an "energy saver" setting that turns off the fan when the compressor shuts off. Hot, humid days, it'll run pretty much from 9am - midnight and occasionally overnight. But it makes the house tolerable. Someday, central might happen, but that's down the road.

I have 2 window units, one of them not working ... in the garage.

I installed one in a window in my upstairs bedroom in the city about 4 years ago, it ran for a couple of days, becoming less effective as the hours passed.

I imagine that the seals were not in good shape and the refrigerant dissipated.

I ran the other for a time in the garage last summer and it was working.

It would be difficult to find a place to install it here, as Uncle installed two swing-out casement windows in each of the kitchen and (high ones) in the living room and one in the bathroom, with a picture window with two sliders below, that are too small to accomodate the A/C, in the dining room (now office/computer room). There are two old double-hung windows, one in each of the bedrooms (on the north side of the house) so I could install it there.

While I slept with no covers sometimes last summer, I was quite warm sometimes, but not inordinately so - enough to cause me to install the conditioner.

While it's been cool late this spring, it turned hot early this week, with temp in mid to high 80s, over 100 if one allows for humidity.

I usually feel the heat especially early in the season, but was not so hot as to be uncomfortable (and was away from home until after supper).

There's a ceiling fan in the living room - but I spend little time there, and hardly ever use it.

I've turned the furnace fan on during the evening a couple of times, this week, to blow basement air up here.

It's been sufficiently comfortable, so far. Thermometers say that it's about 80 degrees in here, at present - I'm surprised: I'd have thought that I'd be feeling rather uncomfortable, but I'm not. At 3:00 a.m.

76 for the window unit..that hasn't gone in yet..because well..it's been about 48 degrees for days!
Last week I had to turn on the heat...or bake all day!

I tried to set it for 80 degrees, but it got a little uncomfortably close.

75 was best, for overnight, w/all 4 of us sin the same room (and 1 window AC unit).

I set it at 78. If I'm going to be cleaning or doing something really active, I may turn it down to 74 or so.

We keep the thermostat set at 72-73 in the summer, 68-70 in the winter - then during that in-between time of year, when the HVAC can't settle on heat or air and keeps switching systems, we keep the thermostat set at about 70 but keep adjusting it so there is not too much heat.

77° here and the ceiling fans are running, day and night. Seem like when the sun gets on the West side of the house (I spend most of my time in the East side) I get almost chilly, so I'll kick it up a couple notches.

I have it set at 78 but sometimes I turn it down to 77. With ceiling fans I am very comfortable. We keep our heat at about 72 in the winter but we wear sweaters and slippers in the house.

78 is the lowest it goes. We usually keep it there but I sometimes set it at 80. I can go days without turning it on even when it is really hot out. The ceiling fans are almost always running and much of the time that is enough for me. Not for my DH. if it were up to him it would be set at 75 or lower. It's not up to him though. :o)
