I will be interested to hear how you like it Imabest. I have a friend that has it and she says it is better than dialup, but not the greatest and it is $$.

Did you go directly with Wild Blue or through Dish Network? We can also get WB through our REC - but the prices are all pretty much the same. It does make a difference on the installation cost though - depending on which provider.

I hope it is great for your - dial up is a bummer any more!

I'm sorry I didn't see your thread asking about those of us in the rural area the other day.

Scroll down in this thread to read of my nightmare with them. Wild Blue ISP-Beware!

You might also want to check out some of the links below. Remember...you will be signing a contract saying you will pay them each month (for a year even if you don't have service. But...if you are out of service for 10 days (and have been able to report it right away) they will give you 10 days credit on your bill.

Though the equipment is under warranty for a year, if it goes bad after 90 days (or needs adjusting) you will be charged $75 per trip....that is if you can get ahold of repair service to report it. Would you mind being on hold for over an hour waiting for a voice to take your call? It seems the only lines they have manned enough are the ones selling their crappy service...even in areas where they do not have repair people enough to take care of any repairs in a timely manner.

All the nightmares are coming back now...had best get off here.

I wish you all the best if you proceed and get it....sigh

I sent the equipment back...might want to keep the boxes just in case, had proof of delivery back to them, and had the equipment charge removed from my credit card. I also canceled my credit card so they could not take the remainder owed on the balance of the contract from my credit card account.

I reported them to the Better Business Bureau.

Sue

Any chance Apt B's prior tenant didn't have their turn off date yet? Or maybe they paid for a full month of service, moved out before their month of Comcast was up (whatever end date that is) and just let it ride out instead of canceling early? Just thinking out loud...

no DSL internet service?!

Try contacting Verizon or Sprint in your area and get a wireless card referred to as "Air Card" they sometimes work in areas where DSL service is not avaliable and you can take it with you anywhere (love mine and get transfer rates of over 1,000kbps - test speed at - http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimetro/pt/?idioma=uk&newlang=uk ) Not easily networkable though if that is something you are trying to do. We got sucked into Hughes Net last year and had to spend almost $1,000 to get installed since there are trees around and they could not mount on the house - Its speed is OK faster than dial up and works 90% of the time (sometimes rain or cloudy days kick it off) Transfer speeds not even near what they tout on TV. I would only get Hughes again as a LAST resort - you have to get an 18 month minimum plan and it really starts to rack up especially if DSL service may be available to you in 6 mos or so. (You can cancel early for a fee.)

T, you're still not getting what I'm saying. lol. WiFi Adapter. Many older (and not so old) computers cannot access WiFi because they simply are not equipped to receive signals from WF routers. You buy an adapter to instantly receive signals from the WiFi router. I have 4 PC's, business and personal. Three of them are new, the other one is 11 years old. Works great, but it won't access the Internet because of not having the WiFi signal stuff already in it. It worked great with DSL. WiFi...no Internet. Hence, a WiFi adaptor is needed. It's no big deal, just a little adapter is all. Look it up.

Internet Service in a Remote Area

@zep, Yep! A front rolled in last night. I am surprised I haven't lost my connection yet, though I may have over night and never realized it. Continual heavy sprinkle now, so I better get done what I can just in case...... Did I tell you about the wind storm we had here in late June that blew my dish out of alignment? Was able to get a connection but it was sporadic and very weak. Lucky for me that I am considered a good customer. I get 1 free house call a year that would have cost me $100 for the tech to come by to realign the dish. Too bad I had to use it for that. There are instructions found on the internet on how to do it yourself, but you're not going to catch me up on the roof. What was that 4G thing you tried by placing on the window sill to boost the connection? It didn't work did it? Remember my first cell phone? Can't remember who the carrier was but in order to get a signal I had to step out on the front porch and hold it high in the air, and because my carrier did not have an antenna near I had to use others and the roaming costs were sending me into bankruptcy. Some times cheap is not the best way to go. If you want good service out here in the middle of nowhere you have to pay for it. When I retire, I am moving closer to town and will certainly look into what is available before that move is decided upon. I never would have thought that an internet\TV\phone connection is what would make me decide where I wanted to live. To think I was worried about property taxes, cost of gas. utilities, etc.

I signed with Wild Blue, last summer. However, I was sent a letter last month that they could no longer provide me the service for the area I live.?????So a new company has taken over my connection. It is pretty slow, to be honest, but better than dial up.
