With SS appliances, does the sink have to also be stainless?

Would it look weird to have stainless appliances with granite tops and use a silgranite sink? We are in the very earliest stages of plan #1 and have so many questions.... Silgranite sinks get good forum time, I've noticed, and just wondered about it. Having said that, I'm drooling over the Franke Orca.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

We are going with stainless appliances and have a matte black Franke fireclay sink going in. Wife HATES stainless sinks.

SS reads as "neutral" (so do black and white) because we're so used to seeing appliances in those colors that we don't notice them. Appliances in other colors get noticed. Some people like to pick up the SS throughout the kitchen and have everything metal match (e.g. sink, faucet, mixer, knobs, dishrack, etc)...other people ignore the "netural" SS and do what they want with other metal throughout the kitchen. Sinks in either white or SS read as neutral. Think of SS as the equivalent of blue jeans...denim jeans in pink get noticed, denim in blue doesn't, and you can coordinate your shirt to the denim or not. Having just spouted off on a matter I swore I'd never touch (design), I have no idea what silgranite is.

theresse there are a million different recipes for stainless and they all result in color variations. I'll bet you want a white cream variation, closer to nickel than to chrome (which is white-gray color) If anyone starts giving you numbers you can go look them up. Wikipedia. Wweb searching to see other articles of the same stainless number. (But screen color is never real color). E.g. 304 - kitchen grade -- but there are many variations in color. E.g. 316 - marine grade, usually darker and grayer. Sheet nickel is hard to find. Therefore you want stainless. Yes, but the right color. It is folded around something to make it appear as that thickness. Therefore, it could be made 3/4" thick not 1" thick. Even 5/8" thick. Or less. Saves space for you. No need to imitate the thickness of a stone. Stone cannot be made thin. (It can but it will crack at some weak point or fault line sooner or later.) Not to imitate the thickness of stone = letting steel be what it is. hth

I think you'll be fine with a stainless prep sink. It'll be an undermount, so it's not as if you'll have a big stainless apron front sink which might (depending on placement) look out of place with your Shaw's. If you really do want a stainless then you must get it. It's going to be your workhorse sink and the last thing you want to have to do is baby it or worry about it.

FWIW, some food for thought while you are deciding: 1) Chrome will look just fine with your SS appliances and sink, and in fact, will add a little sparkle which is nice (we chose the polished chrome finish for our ceiling fan, despite choosing SN handles for our cabs--the fan co.'s SN/BN finish was very dull-looking and a very muddy color at that that--it looks awesome in the chrome, much more special than it would have in the other, drab finish). 2) Most of the faucets I've seen do look prettier in chrome than they do in SS or SN. but: 3) Chrome does show spotting more readily than SS, so you might be wiping it down more often to keep that shiny, clean look. I've chosen some things for our home, knowing that they will require a little more "upkeep" or attention in order to remain nice, while rejecting others as being, not worth the effort (for me). 4) Grohe's SS is SS through and through--we chose SS for our Ladylux Cafe faucet because we felt the finish would hold up best through the inevitable bumps and banging that occur when we wash stuff in our sink (e.g. "buffing" out some of the "damage" if need be). You can use a white or cream sink. I think it's more important that it works with the counter if you're thinking of using something like a Silgranite sink. People on the Kitchens forum rave about their Silgranite sinks so I got persuaded into one when I remodeled my kitchen three years ago. It's the best sink I've ever had and it comes in several colors, shapes, and sizes.

OK, so counters are Formica, not granite, but the appliances are SS. Here's a pic of my black sink (Pegasus):

Love how it blends in to countertop.

I wouldn't think so. We have black appliances and a black silgranit sink - and they don't match. One's shiny and the other's matte.

I have a white Silgranit sink in my white marble counter and I'm very happy with it. The appliances are stainless. As bluekitobsessed pointed out, SS reads as a neutral, but in my house it is always a water-marked dingy looking neutral, so I decided against it.

If you do go with a Silgranit, just get one that best matches your countertop. I understand that they recently introduced a few new colors.

I say, no. I do think that probably your faucet should be SS, to match, though. I have SS. new venetian gold granite and my sink is a Kohler smart divide in Black-n-Tan. I really like the way it looks. Good luck!

Absolutely not. Go with whatever kind of sink you want! You'll see fireclay in lots of colors, siligranite, porcelain and copper all over this forum and many (if not most) of them have stainless appliances. I have maple cabinets, ubatuba granite, slate floor and backsplash, stainless appliances, anthracite siligranit sink and ORB hardware and faucet.

Just wanted to make sure we aren't making some really bad choices...we both are having pre pick-out-the-cabinet-tomorrow jitters.....

I need to chill out before I drive my husband crazy.
