Wow thank you for sharing, I do realize people need to make money for a serviceÂjust like we all need too. WhatÂs interesting though is the wide range of methods of pricing! My head is spinning trying to plan my kitchen & this is where you can be had without doing your homework. However, I canÂt say for sure if I had unlimited funds if I would put myself through this torture, I may want to draw the pictures and let someone else do the rest. I like to design but am weak in other areas, although I do have people with knowledge and experience to utilize. So, I guess the moral is to do your homework, shop around and if you do not plan on doing any part of the work Shop Around Again and Again.

My cabinet guy at Lowes--who I love--told me that the linear pricing is really just for the floor kitchens so customers could have some way to compare door styles but really, when the computer tallies it up, it has nothing to do with the equation.

No, it's not a gimmick. It's not exactly a science either. It's used mainly as a qualifier.

If you have 25 feet of wall in you kitchen and our price is "roughly" $1000 a foot , and your budget is $15,000 - then we really don't have much more to talk about unless you are willing to increase your budget. It saves me from wasting my time with pricing books/programs and your money if I happen to charge for fairly accurate price planning.

There is no such thing as a "free estimate".

I would imagine that the typical "per lineal foot" for a particular manufacturer/style is amassed from large amounts of data, and could be a fairly accurate guideline. For example, I know I can afford Kraftmaid at $ per lineal foot, but not Bulthaup at $$$ per lineal foot.

Its kind of like the $ $$ $$$ for restaurant reviews. Its not all that specific but it rules out where you can't eat.

Palimpsest, I definitely agree with you. It puts you in the ballpark. But you have to admit, most people want box seats...and for that, there's always an upcharge ;)

The fair way to price is to charge per what a particular size cabinet is. That is, this 30 inch base cabinet in such and such materials is "X" dollars. This particular wood is..., this door style is..., and the extras, such as pull outs and such would be this amount.

I'm NOT impressed with the big box store linear foot pricing. I looked at their "high end" cabinets and they were almost $300 a linear foot. Give me a break! The drawyer bottoms look like contact paper over thin "wood". Several years ago it wasn't that way when I
I shopped at Home Depot.

I can get a high quality custom cabinet maker for less.

Needless to say, neither Lowes or Home Depot is getting my kitchen job.

Oooh Sandy808..I bought my Schuler's from Lowe's and I am so excited to get them installed. They are all wood construction, soft close drawers, white paint on roughly half of them and it came to $317.85 a linear foot. Installed.

I saw some of my own arguments in that post, like lineal footage on drawer bases costing more than lineal footage on regular cabinets, or full height door cabinets, or stuff with roll trays. The argument "Well, you just charge extra for those things," and mine is "Well, what was the sense doing lineal foot pricing in the first place?"

This might be one of those "Tastes Great! Less Filling!" discussions, but I've just not been able to wrap my mind around lineal foot pricing when there are so many options that shoot holes in the price.
