On a side note - when my son was 10 years old, he learned to do his own laundry, including ironing his white shirts (uniform for Catholic School) as punishment -actually a threat because he would throw his clothes & uniforms on the floor - under his bed - who knows where else! After a week, I thought he learned his lesson - well..........he said he did his laundry better then I did, so he would continue to do it!! He was very good at ironing. When he went away to college, he couldn't believe how many kids didn't know how to laundry. ( I think he still throws his clothes on the floor - but it is in his own home now so I don't care:) Teaching your son how to use an iron is a very good skill to teach - as well as sewing! Good job to you both!

He did a great job. He and you should be proud.

Thank you, everyone! My son loves hearing that "he done well". LOL He is a perfectionist, and loves to work with his hands. Once he sees someone doing something, it only takes him one try to do it himself...usually much better than the person he saw doing it in the first place!

Mago~ The pinwheels, depending on what type fabric you use (I have used flannel before), soften up with each washing and really start to look more realistic. They keep their positions- the way they are facing- but they round out a bit, I guess you could say. The pinwheels are just squares that are folded over twice and pinned to a background square.Then the four background squares are sewn together like a regular 4-square. So the pinwheels really have some substance, and are great for baby quilts- babies like to pull on them. I always make sure I double stitch the blocks, just to make sure that they don't come loose later.

We have 6 kids, and the oldest 2 boys are in a church group- Pathfinders. It's much like Boyscouts. They earn honors for learning different skills. Quilting & sewing is one of them. Doing laundry & other household chores is another. There are 150 honors, more or less...I forget the total! But both boys do the household chores regularly anyway, so they already have the honors associated with them. I rarely do the dishes or sweep the floors anymore. :O) I just tidy up after the littlest ones. It's a team effort, really. Everyone pitches in around here.
My oldest- he's 13- loves to cook, so he does that every chance he gets. He'll be quilting next week, so we'll see what he comes up with!

What a wonderful first quilt! Sooo much harder and better done than my first one was. You must be a really great teacher.

I'm not sure about the good teacher part...lol...but he's one of those "evil genius" kids. He makes everything look incredibly easy. He's watched me sew for a few years, so he had it down in his head how it worked. He just needed a few practice runs on some scrap fabric, and WHAM! he took off like he'd been doing it for years. Funny thing is, he told me last night that he "probably won't make one of those blankets again". Once he's accomplished something & is satisfied with it...he moves on. Doesn't do it again unless it was something he'd really enjoy.

He did tell me, though, that he thinks he'll make a huge quilt later as a wedding present for his future wife.
