I got a new sewing machine!

I bought a new machine last week and finally had a little while to check it out last night. I decided on a Janome 3018 Quilter's Companion. It's one of their basic mechanical machines, but compared to my $99 Singer, it's a dream! It's nice and quiet and I can do free-motion on it. It came with all the quilting gadgets--free motion foot, walking foot, quilting guide, 1/4" foot. It also has a 1 step button hole, which may seem like no big deal, but if you've ever tried to make a button hole with a 3 step process, you'll appreciate it! I actually took the day off from work tomorrow to sew! (OK, also to clean my house and catch up on other things.)

Aren't you lucky!! I have a 3-4 yr old Janome and love it. It's a memory craft but I don't remember the number. even though it's old, I love it.

Congrats on your new machine. I have 2 Janome machines and love both of them. My first Janome was the Jem Gold for classes and quilt group. It is a great little machine. I also have the Memory Craft 10001 for embroidery and love it too.

Do something simple & straight like make napkins or pillowcases. If you have little ones in your world, pillowcases are the thing now for friends to sign at birthday parties, slumber parties, field trips, Vacation Bible School & etc. You could build a gift closet. Give them that & the permanent ink pens. Also theme fabric in a pillowcase makes a good way to wrap birthday & Christmas gifts. The wrapping gets later use, not put in the trash can.

I "googled" your model number and found several forums where they discussed what a poorly written manual you have. You might search for a Yahoo group that discusses various sewing machine or the Kenmore machines. Or just 'play' with it. Get a piece of medium wt white fabric, put colored thread in and start trying out various stitches. My Viking machine has a picture of the various stitches printed on the actual top of the machine along with a 'number' which is what one enters on the keypad. One of the posters talking about your machine seemed to indicate the machine would make monograms but that was an additional software that would need to be purchased.

Singer is no longer a good machine so I would not go there. Why don't you visit several dealers and spend the afternoon taking a class on anything. That way you can use a machine for 3 hours for $5 or $10 and see if you like it. Since you are a new sewer, what you like and need might not be the same as the preferences of someone who has sewn for years. Sit and try several machines -- and not just for 15 minutes. How easy is it for you to change threads? Will the machine jam if you start sewing at the end of the fabric or do you need to use a "cheater". Do you have up and down needle buttons. Do you have a clear bobbin cover? What about speed control? Will the machine thread the needle for you? Best wishes,

You may find classes at Joann Fabrics and you will certainly find books. Before you spend money on books go to the library and spend some time reading. If I were limited to just one sewing book (I have at least 100) it would be the Reader's Digest Sewing Book. Mine is from the '70's, it's full of good info and techniques. Are there any small facric shops in your area? That's where I would look for lessons. What kinds of things are you interested in making? Home Dec, clothing for adults or children. Kids toys, dog toys or clothes. Spend an afternoon at Joann's looking though the pattern books. I have a problem with buying a sewing machine from Sears or any other department store...Who is going to fix it or answer any questions you might have?...because the local sewing machine store isn't going to want to fix that Kenmore (Janome). Just my 2cents. Good luck and happy sewing. It's something I started to learn in Jr High and continue to take classes 40 years later.

Boy--what a perfect time to get a new toy. While the weather is starting to get on the chilly side, you can hibernate making lot's of holiday stuff on your new machine! And that sounds like a nice on too--I've been reading a lot of good stuff about Janomes!
As one of my favorite dumb movie characters would say say--Luckeeeeeeeee!

I had a cheaper 1 stitch model for many, many, many years and since I was a hand quilter it suited my needs.
I bought a Janome MC something around Christmas and I absolutely never knew what I was missing before!!!!
Mine likes to be cleaned often and it likes the same thread in the bobbin as the top. I can easily deal with both of those!!!
