Sink installation is wrong!

So, I've paid the contractor mega $$$$ so far, and he's ready for the last payment, but I hesitate because the vanity sink is 1/2" crooked, but it's already glued down. Can this be fixed without ruining my sink? It's a drop in rope American Standard that I purchased from Lowe's. The solid top travertine looks great, but not this!

There are other issues too, like the bathtub faucet dripping and hardware loose, but my main concern is sink!

Please help! He wants the money this Monday, 5/23!

Don't pay until the entire job is correct.

Document every problem---write a list, take pictures.

Hand that to him Monday. But---have another set in case.

You should be asking the contractor about these issues. If you don't get a satisfactory response withhold enough to pay for the corrections yourself. Put it all in writing and make reference to the correction of the work clause in the contract.

Hi All, Thanks for all your posts. Well, my wife called up the installer and had him install the higher performance model Goodman listed above. It is now installed, and it really puts out the heat. Of course, the GMH950703BXA has about 66% better heating capacity than the other model, so I guess it is not surprising that there would be a substantial difference. I have another question though; I went up into our attic to look at the AC wiring going into the unit and it appears there is no emergency power disconnect installed. Would you recommend that I get one installed? Apparently, the installer just grabbed some armored cable I had in my garage and ran that from the furnace, along the attic roof and into the ceiling--not sure where it goes from there. Also, it appears he didn't run a ground wire in there, just hot and cold wires. I suppose the unit gets its ground from some other pipe or something (gas pipe?), as the furnace is not supposed to run without a ground connected, according to the installation manual (which also says there is supposed to be an emergency disconnect, which I suppose the installer didn't read, or ignored). NC Cowgirl, the first Shaw sink we had was a piece of work. You could visually see how "wonky" it was. We sat it in the cab base, put a bucket under it and did some test draining. Cab guy shimmed it the best he could, but it was never gonna drain from the right side. I decided to get another sink and luckily I had purchased from my local plumbing supply store. They took wonky one back and gave me another sink which drains okay. I do recommend having a sprayer with any Shaw sink. But as I mentioned, our near perfect cut out in our sink cabinet was no more. Ajard, I'm sorry but there's no way you can have those gaps on the side of your sink. It's nuts. As I mentioned, mine is certainly not perfect, but it was not the fault of my cabinet guy. We tried caulk to fill the gaps as a first resort. Benjamin Moore made the caulk to match my cream cabinet color. We decided if that did not satisfy me, we would go to Plan B. But, it was fine...not perfect, but fine. If I had a camera, I would take a pic to show you, but hubby has it with him. I feel for you and hope you find an acceptable resolution. Good Luck! pup

I realize some people think ovals are "dated." Dated - schmated. Oval sinks are classic, not something that even can be "dated". On the other hand, I would care that the sink shape matches other things in the room. The (navy) Hall Bath sinks are too close to the side walls (another design glitch that should have been considered by the designer, but it's too late to change), The sinks are attractive ... but, yes, they are too close to the edge and will always be somewhat uncomfortable to use; that is a person using them will always have to stand a bit to the side of the sink instead of "straight on" because they're so close to the edge. I have this very problem in my girls' bathroom. They share a ridiculously long 13' vanity with two sinks on the very tippy-tippy ends. Just as I described above, they end up standing "to the side" of their sinks to avoid their arms hitting the wall. Is it the end of the world? Not at all, but it's poor planning. If you could wave a magic wand and have it done, I'd say re-do /go with a single sink and a stack of drawers on each side. However, I don't think that's a choice. The $500 option isn't enough to make up for this mistake. I'd ask for $1000 ... and live with it. Re-doing would mean more time, bringing in more countertop, and in the end, the sinks would be your preferred shape ... but would still be too close to the edge. Your master bath looks beautiful by the way. Yes, it does ... simple and tasteful. The hall bath does too. I am concerned that my retro-looking faucet Okay, I agree with you ... but I think it's a minor issue. The faucets aren't installed yet, right? Why not change the style of the hall bath faucet? In fact, this is a good reason to demand more than a paltry $500 ... you now have to return /choose again. It’s a slippery slope we go down once we allow these kinds of things to slide. You specified oval; they ignored you. Now the onus is on you? Unacceptable. I can't disagree with a single word here. Who's the boss in this situation? It oughta be YOU. What do you think of larger mirrors that are NOT centered over sinks but extend beyond? For the hall bath, I'd go with one big mirror. Why? As I described above, people using these sinks are going to end up standing slightly to the side of the sink to avoid touching the wall ... which means that if they have individual mirrors, they're going to stand looking at the mirror's border, not their own reflection.

Thanks kandrewspa, all good points. Makes me feel better :) What saves me on the inside of the house is that there's a slight "divide" between kitchen and dining room, so mismatched windows won't be super apparent on the inside. And when we're in my yard (mostly in the summer), we're enjoying my huge pool, so no one will really notice like you said. More annoyed that it wasn't what I asked for, but right now I just need this project to continue moving along. Windows take months and months to be delivered these days, it seems. I just want back in my house already lol.

Thank you for the advice! Pics...a good idea...will do. Lists...I've made several over the past 6 weeks, and will make another. I wish I could be at home to "baby-sit" the process. Instead, I come home to surprises, some good, some not.

I won't pay until I'm satisfied, but I already know what he'll say:"Don't worry, you can't really tell that the sink is crooked. It's glued down, so nothing can be done". I know him well enough by now, so I'm pretty sure that's the answer. He already said that the towel bar and t.p. holder can't be tightened because it's not the screw in type, but the slide in type. I thought..."What"????? These items are very loose (and weren't cheap).

Can a glued down sink be reinstalled (moved to center by 1/2")???? I want to tell him that it NEEDS to be fixed. I don't want to buy another brand new sink just because his installers were in a hurry, apparently.

If this is a drop in sink it shouldn't be glued down to the counter. The sink should be held in place with metal clips from below and the "glue" should be some form of sealant or putty that prevents water from running under the sink and into the cabinet.

I would ask the contractor where in the design documents it says the sink can be crooked and the TP holder can be loose. The GC should owe you good workmanship per the terms of the contract.

- Self-rimming drop-in sinks with clamps.
This type sink is very common in stainless steel double sink or single sink models for kitchen use, and porcelain or stainless steel for bathroom use. Self-rimming drop-in sinks feature a "rim" or lip around the perimeter. They drop into a pre-cut hole in the counter top so that the rim rests directly on the counter top, and are fastened in place using special clamps below. CAULKING is applied around the rim to provide a water seal; or plumber's PUTTY is used under the rim.

This type sink is simply dropped into the opening so that the rim rests on the counter top; clamping underneath is not necessary. Usually porcelain or ceramic, they are held in place with a bead of CAULKING around the rim. This holds it to the counter top and provides a water seal.

Unless the specification called for some kind of epoxy adhesive (for what purpose I can't imagine) your contractor has probably used a silicone sealant and is pretending it can't be removed because he doesn't want to take the time to remove all of the residue so the new adhesive will adhere.
