Will kitchen cabinets push me over the edge? Looking for expert

I really don't intend to focus on this all weekend. The weather is gorgeous, and I want to de-stress.

But.... kitchen cabinets are going to push me to do some serious drinking....or something.

Some of you may have read my previous posts; I have been stressing because the cabinet guy is taking forever. I won't touch on that again, though we did have a serious conversation about that.

So he delivered some more of the kitchen cabinets yesterday. No doors, so it hard to give raving reviews about the quality yet. However, the paint finish is awesome, the cabinets look gorgeous. I have seen 2 inset doors installed on the butlers pantry and they look wonderful. I'm thinking, boy maybe it is worth all the delays. He really is doing a good job.

But then I realize; that the hood cabinet is wrong. Back in December, I fell in love with a cabinet and decided; "That is exactly what I want".

So, I gave the photo to him (in December) and said this is it. "I want my cabinet to look just like this. I want the shelf, the keystone, I want it all. Just like this photo." He says; no problem. But when he presented his drawings, he had placed 4 doors on the cabinet. So; I pulled out my picture again, gave him another copy and said "This is what I want".

No problem he say's, I just forgot. So he assures me he won't forget.

HE FORGOT.

It's 9pm last night when i see this; so of course I had problems going to sleep. But I called him this morning and after letting him know how wonderful the quality was, told him that the cabinet over the cooktop is wrong. He panicked for a moment; then said; I need to go look at my clipboard and I'll call you back. He later called my husband and said, "Oh no, I messed up".

So on the upside, I think he will try to correct this. On the downside, there is a concern that there will not be a way to get to the hood vent if he does what I want. So my husband is thinking a removable panel. I don't want to see "seams" of a removable panel.

I'm not really panicking because I know that this can be corrected. I just need to know how it should be done so that I can speak intelligently about it. So please,tell me what could be; should be done now?

My wood hood flips up. There is a "seam" that is only seen on the sides (not from the front), but to me it's no big deal at all. It looks great.

My hubby just installed the ducting today, and actually I don't think he could have done it without having access. The venting would have had to have been longer and then able to scunch up when the hood was put in place - and that's not feasible to the best of my knowledge.

This isn't my hood, but it's made by my cabinet makers and is what my side with the seam looks like:

Thanks for response needsometips08. I think the one in the picture is very nice. He may have to do something like that.

I would really like to seem more pictures on how creative people solved for this.

I think that I may post under a different subject line to see if I can get some response today. The cabinet guy will be over tomorrow and we need to solve for this.

Hmmm, that looks like a good spot for a chimney cupboard, then. I'm not sure what to think about the extra bar seating in the family room. I don't know if it would get used or not. I'm willing to do that if we'd really use it. I just went through (too many) images looking for pass through window inspiration. I'm finding very little that looks like what I'm thinking of doing. Does that make me ultra-original...or whacko? LOL So, my thought was to put open shelves in the pass-through windows and use them for storing some of my prettier functional items. Good looking bowls, canisters, etc. Or, to do glass cabinet doors, something like the article in the scullery thread a bit ago. I linked the kitchen from Fine Home Building with the pass through cupboards below. Here's one image that sort of comes close. I don't have modernist leanings (that I know of), so this is a bit off, but it's close. so all, i got an email from my kd today saying she submitted a letter to medallion to send decorative ends only for the cabs with the spots. i paid for 9 finished ends and that would cover 3. having decorative ends on some but not all is going to look terrible! so of course i emailed back that it would look odd and unfinished and that i would rather just replace the replacement cab and live with the spots on the other two cabs. i really am at a loss here as to why anyone would think 3 of 9 face cabs would be ok to add decorative ends and further i am really disappointed that medallion isn't more concerned about these finish issues. i can't be the only one! any advice? at this point i can't replace the base cabs since the granite is in but am i within my rights as a consumer to have the newest one replaced? i did let my kd know that would be more than happy to have a medallion rep come to my house and inspect the flaws. she didn't know if the rep wants to do that so it has not come up in their conversations/emails. thanks everyone!

Nice kitchen. If I could, I would really redo the island....get rid of it entirely and replace it with something that is even beefier. You have room for a larger one. I'd put a granite top on it with an overhang and legs to really make it the important statement piece it could be for your kitchen, and put all the chairs on the same side. Make it one height, counter height. I agree about getting the ceiling fixed and I'd replace the fixtures with 2 over the new island...I love art glass to add sparkle, and coordinate with the glass-fronted corner cab. Make sure they are hung at the right height (the one that's there is too high). Get something more contemporary... I think localeater was thinking of rub 'n' buff to change the color of the brass caming on the corner cabinet. If you decide to paint the wall, then you might want to paint out the window trim as well...otherwise it will really stand out...right now it blends in with the wall color. I agree about area rugs as well to add more color to the floor...maybe pick a color from the rug to put on the wall. Rug from overstock.com (polypropylene for cleanability) Green Ushak Paint color: BM Central Park Teapots should just go, especially the chickens as they scream country.

Pantry cabinets - think about storage, though. Traditional pantry cabinets are usually deep (24") and difficult to access - even with roll out tray shelves. Built-in pantries are actually more efficient and more functional than cabinets if you plan them correctly. They should have shallow shelves (around 12" deep) so nothing gets lost - deep shelves become black holes - whether in pantry cabinets or built-in pantries. With a built-in pantry: You have floor to ceiling storage, including the floor (cabinets are limited to around 7' and you lose space for toekick, roll out tray shelves and their hardware, floor and top of the cabinets, etc.) You can utilize the walls for broom storage You can see everything at one time (no having to pull open tray after tray looking for something) If your shelves are adjustable, you have far more flexibility and options for shelf configuration (cabinets have limited adjustability) If you must use cabinets, then get narrower cabinets with pullouts so at least you have easier access and aren't as likely to lose things.
