Dog bath in laundry room?

We are planning a remodel of our kitchen/laundry room/guest bath/family room. I have a small dog that requires regular bathing and grooming and am hoping I can incorporate a dog bath/grooming area into my laundry room. What I envision is a sort of general purpose laundry sink, I guess, with the top of my (now free-standing) grooming table attached to the wall above it with hinges so that after bathing the dog, I can lower the top over the sink and dry and brush her right there. I am wondering if anyone has seen or heard of anything similar and has either suggestions or pictures?

Sounds like a good idea. If we were to ever do a gut the house to the studs type renovation, I'd do the exact same thing as you. The inner core of our 2nd floor have seperate master bath/laundry room and linen closet which all share walls. None of the rooms by themselves are very large. After looking at the space you realize the walls take up a lot of physical space and create layout limitations inside each small room. One big room with access from the master bedroom and hall near the kids rooms would have worked out better.

Sorry this post got overlooked. I am seeing a very long kitchen. Do you have the total length written anywhere? I also see you are removing 103" of wall going into the dining room. You say you are removing the wall between the kitchen and the 18 x 10 space, too. But the bathroom is part of that area, so the wall has to stay for the bathroom, right? Given that a bank of windows appears to start right after the bathroom, it seems that the only way to expand the bathroom is toward the left, right? I would expand it three feet out - enough that a tub/shower combo can be put on the upper wall of the bathroom with a 2 ft wide linen closet next to it. That makes the bathroom spacious. Then along the wall to the left, in the 18 x 10 space, I would put a series of 12" to 18" deep pantries with cupboard doors that open. These are 6 ft of 12" deep ones I had in my previous house, and they were easy to use and nothing got lost in them.I put in that high workstation at 40" for when I needed to do any delicate work. It turned out that the dogs could not jump that high and it became the place to set pies and the like! The cupboard on the far end, facing us, is 2 ft deep and was the vacuum/broom/mop/recycling cabinet. Since you have so much room, one like that and another one with shelves for appliances would be nice to have. Putting them along the wall means that you can walk right past the bank of them and they will serve as walls of the hallway to the laundry room. You have so many windows along the right side of this room that I wonder where the laundry can be. Can you do a drawing of that end of the space, including the door to the garage and all windows? Be sure to specify the height of the bottom of the windows, too. In the kitchen area, what is the height of the bottom of the windows on the right side wall? Can you put a 38" high counter under them, with cabinets? Specify this for all the windows in the kitchen area, please. Are you completely open to the plumbing being wherever someone places it, or do you want to preserve some of the existing plumbing? If the later, please draw in where sinks, toilets, and any other plumbing already exists. My answer will bump this to the top, and others will be able to see it.

Half Bath in Furnace/Laundry/Mud Room or in sewing room?

chicagoans, I will most likely remove those French Doors since that will be the new living room. Not sure I will need a door or should I add one? I have moved all of my cabinets that were in my sewing room to the new sewing room and because it is laid out different I could not figure out how to add everything. I removed the half bath for the moment. Also, if you are talking about the window on the porch I will be removing it and putting the den on the left side of the porch. I have not added a door in the garage yet to go to the outside (is that what a man door is?) I have been looking at Foyer layouts but don't want to go too wide but I think I would like French Doors for the entry or at least a door and a half with both sides that will open. I will have the doors to the den will be off the foyer and I was thinking about adding the half bath at the end of the den wall. If I put the laundry room in the kitchen I was going to put the pantry on the east side but the entry door will be at the other end. What would you do and would you enclose the pantry with walls and a separate door or just have the shelves exposed? Right now my shelves are 12" deep but I think I would like them deeper--maybe at least 14" deep. I know the garage is on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen but those are the only places I can have them located because of the lot.

I'm using a Kerdi shower pan-- size can be modified on site before tiling-- to create a floor level shower about 24x48 at floor level in the laundry. I'm putting a ring in the wall to which their collars [with a short lead] can be attached for bathing my large dogs.

This will also be the spot where i keep the water bowls to control spills.

Above that, I want a simple fold down mesh table for blocking sweaters and the like, and above that, a couple rods that will let me hang drip dry clothes.

No pics yet, maybe after the tile is up, if you still want them should be about a month].

Oruboris, I would love to see a picture once you get it up. It sounds like you're on a similar track although I have a smaller dog and want to be able to bathe her while I'm standing (I currently do it in the shower but it requires me getting in there with my swim suit on and either holding her or bending over, neither of which work very effectively. I like the idea of the ring in the wall as a backup although usually I can handle her without that since she is small. But every now and then I need both hands free when she wants to wiggle out so that would be helpful. I look forward to seeing your pictures.

I put my front load washer and dryer on a little platform -- my laundry sink, too. I bathe our Westie in the laundry sink and set him on the washer to dry him with the hairdryer.

One of my 'house rules' is we can't have a dog that won't fit in a laundry sink! LOL We're on our fourth Westie.

Chisue, I have a coton...she's about the same size as a Westie and sometimes confused with them by those who are not too familiar as cotons are all white also. I thought about that idea as well; I don't have FL washer but thought about just using the dryer. I worried however that it would be too slippery. Does your Westie wiggle to get down while being dried or is he pretty passive? If he wiggles, how do you keep him on the dryer? (Bugsy still (4 years old!)wiggles to get down and get going.)If you can post a picture, though,I'd be curious to see your sink....or maybe you can tell me what type it is. Thanks.

Oh, I just love the coton! A neighbor had one -- first I'd ever seen. His name was Poochini.

I just set the three things in a row on a wood 'riser' that the carpenter for our house built for me. The sink is in a regular 2-door laundry sink cabinet; next is the washer, then the dryer. I put a heavy towel on top of the appliance to give Eliot some 'footing'. He's pretty good about being washed and dried. I don't attempt to groom him though. (I suppose you could use a rubber mat.)

Don't get the sink TOO high or you'll have to lift the dog up a lot to het him into the sink.

Thanks, chisue. As I think about it, I think I need to stick to the original idea of trying to hinge the top of my grooming table to the wall so I can bring it down as when I'm grooming her, I really need to be able to attach the arm to it from time to time...she can really get impatient. Not that I blame her...it takes a while sometimes to get her coat dried and brushed out although now that she is no longer in show coat at least it's less than an hour! Luckily, at 10 lbs., lifting her isn't too much of a problem. She'd like it if I just carried her around all day! LOL...
