Good luck to you,and as your dr said,thyroid cancer is very curable,and not as life threatning as other forms of cancer.Also you can live quite well without your thyroid.I know because I have been doing it for many years. Mine started in 1970,and was treated for years with just meds,then it started growing again,so I had the surgery,where they took out the right side,scraped the isthmus,and took a1/3 of the left. 1st surgery was july 76. Then I was put back on meds that I take every morning as soon as my feet hit the floor. Fast forward to 20 years,almost to the day later,started having problems again,test and scans done and what was left of the left side was growing again,so back to surgery I go,and the rest was removed and that was in 1996.I still take the little pill every day,and have had ear surgery,knee replacement and breast cancer surgery and chemo and i'm still hanging in there. I did ask my dr if I would be able to sing after as he had told me I may not be able to talk right away,after the second surgery.He said did you sing before?? I said no,but I thought maybe you could do a miracle while you're in there!!!! LOL No one can tell that I have had 2 thyroid surgeries unless I tell them as I have no scar whatsoever.The dr cut into the crease of my neck,and it isn't even noticeable. Good luck to you,will add you to my prayer list. Oh by the way,they told me with the first surgery that it was a carcinoma,but i'd probably die from something else before I died from the thyroid.I'm 75 now and still going strong,Thank GOD!!!! Caroline, of course we can be "sisters". I had a successful kidney transplant in January 2012. But I kept having these several-times- a- day "hot flashes", worse than anything I had with menopause seven years ago. My urologist felt my throat and said he felt a one-centimeter nodule. I had no pain or other problems. I then went to a specialist, an endocrinologist. She also felt a nodule and sent me for a sonogram of my neck. It showed seven nodules, five big and two small, the small ones under 2 centimeters. A few days later (last Tuesday) she did the biopsy. I was quite fearful, took a Zanax before, which relaxed me. The assistant had me lie back in a chair and tipped me back, like at the dentist. She cleaned my neck. Then the doctor came in with her needle and a jar for the tissue samples. She nick-named the nodules "The Twins" and "The Triplets" as there were three on the left side and two on the right. The thyroid is in the center front of your neck, just below your adam's apple. She had the assistant spray my neck with something to numb the skin, but I felt every jab. She would stick the needle in , then stir it around and push deeper to get enough tissue. I stopped counting at ten jabs. They told me not to talk or swallow when the needle was in. That was hard.It hurt a lot and I felt a tear roll out of one eye. Finally it was over. She put a couple bandaids on my neck and I was allowed to go home. I took Aleve tablets and kept a bag of frozen peas on my neck for most of Tuesday evening. The next morning I had no pain whatsoever. The tissue samples were sent to a lab that does extensive testing, including Genetic and "Genomic" testing, whatever that is. But the downside is it takes two and a half weeks for the results, so I'm still worrying and waiting. Best case scenario, everything will be benign. Worst case, I will have to have my thyroid removed, but at least I'll be under anesthesia for that. I've been assured one can live a long life without a thyroid, and thyroid cancer is the most curable kind to get. So it could be worse... Good luck, Caroline. Let us know when you get the results. Clubm and others..... I have 4 "clips/markers" in my left breast and 5 in my left armpit! Do I know they are there...YES! Especially when I have my annual mammogram and PET Scan or go through the machines at the airport. They do not set the machines off but I feel a tingling sensation. I need to clarify......my 1999 biopsy was just that...a biopsy! However; while in surgery on 2/19/2199....the "clips/markers" were inserted. I also had the Sentinel Lymph node Biopsy prior to my surgery...the tech inserted the radio-active dye directly into the mass that would travel and mark any cancerous lymph nodes...no numbing or anesthesia involved.....that hurt like he**. During surgery, my breast surgeon used a geiger counter to locate any "nodes" involved. I was one of 40 women to have this procedure done....AND one of 4 with negative test results! I have all of this on film...a local news channel was doing a segment on breast cancer; they filmed my "adventure" from the minute I walked into the hospital scrubbed in for my surgery and was with me for "some" of my recovery room time. A year later they did a follow up story...my 15 minutes of fame! SORRY...did not mean to hi-jack your post!
