Update - Island stools are painted

Awhile back I had posted asking what you thought I should do my island stools. I ended up going with black paint. This had been a long journey.

I first just rubbed black glaze over them. I failed to sand so it wouldn't take. I then sanded and tried to reglaze but it looked streaky and horrible. Next I primed and spray painted black. They were too stark so I distressed the edges a bit and stained. Still too in your face black. Went to sand lightly over the whole thing but the primer kept poking through and obviously wouldn't take the stain. SO by hand I resanded them again. (Couldn't work the electric sander to save my life. Developed a nice, fat blister on my thumb).. picked up my third can of spray paint :) , distressed all over and stained again. Here's the result. It's hard to get a good pic. They look much better in person.

Sorry about the blister! But -- in the end -- all of your hard work has certainly been worth the effort!

Looks great! Your kitchen is transformed with the window treatments/paint and now new lighting fixture. You should compare a before and after. Why do you need to paint the backplate? I like the dark plate, otherwise it would look like chains are coming out of your ceiling???

Roseabby...truly stunning. Perfection. Wow does anyone even enter or eat in that magnificent showroom kitchen:). Im so jealous as your floors are the exact floors I was going to go for with that staggered pattern. Offsets the dark cabs beautifuly. Instead I took the hardwood (same color as cabs) and ran through whole house. Shows every blessed crumb and Im a slave to keeping them clean but do get many many compliments on them. Ok, I truly am going to do something now but please dont laugh at how my island is ladies. Its literaly a cabinet size and thats all the room would allow. Love how your corbels look underneath Abbey but my granite wont allow the room to support underneath:(. So happy you took the time to post pics. For some reason its so difficult for me to figure out how to post when Ive not been on this site to do in awhile but I promise Ill take the time to do it so you fabulous and supportive decorators can give me the thumbs up or down. Ive seen the Rustoleom package for cabinet painting at Lowes and small pkg is $79.99 so wondering if I should just pick the cream and go for it or order everything ala carte etc and figure it out. sounds like many have had great results with Benjamin Moore paints. We used Sherwin Williams plastic coat paint I think its called on all our doors and white trim and its literally like a hard plastic shell with gorgeous results so may use that and just tint cream colored.

Sorry I don't have any advice to offer on the how to's of the painting but I applaud your courage to paint the island. Not seeing a picture, I can visualize it though. I say go for it. I'm sure it will be great. Then when it's finished, your husband will say "I felt it should have been painted in the first place. I really like it". Consider it confirmation. That's what would happen in my house.

I really like all your wood. It must be a matter of personal opinion. I think the gray looks okay from what I can see. It might help to see a closeup of your backsplash. I also like Daisy's suggestions.

Thanks everyone! I'll admit I can't take the credit for stain idea either.... Mldao gave me the suggestion.

Justinea - I didn't make them. My aunt has a friend who likes to sew. She never did anything like this before so it was all new to her. I think she did a good job. I bought the foam online and the cushion wraps over it. I do have a rubber pad on the seat to help with sliding. We honestly don't even sit on them. My sister is the only one who does when she comes to visit! It's funny how I was worried about my one cat's claws because he would always perch on the stools and be nosey. Since we stuck the cushions on he hasn't been up once.
