My daughter and I visited Tybee Island last Sept and spent a day in Savannah. It wasn't enough time. I like to use the link here to get real travelers opinions. I especially liked the 90 minute Oglethorpe Trolly Tour. Don't miss the river walk. Paula Dean's restaurant is there as well as many many other really good ones. Enjoy!

Skip Paula Deen's restaurant and go to Pirate's House. Far exceeds Paula's, I promise.
If staying overnite, take the ghost tour bus ride, you can do the walking tour, but the bus ride is very informative, and you get to see everything.
Day tours are great, as you get to see the historic homes, plus a church which I don't remember the name.
Paula's brother owns a restaurant on Tybee Island, which we did not go to, some say it is fantastic, some say not. Didn't go there.
I enjoyed sitting by the river watching the boats go by.

HD and I (with 2 children) have been to Savannah several times since we live in GA, it makes for a nice getaway. Be prepared however to fight the crowds, gnats and other flying varmints too! Also, don't forget the meat tenderizer if going to Ty Bee especially....our last vacation there ended after HD was stung by a stingray. We didn't see it and he thought maybe he had just scrapped his leg on something under the water..but after 2 days of pain, swelling in redness...we began a long trip home to North Georgia. He was in terrible pain, nauseated etc. It wasn't until several days later that I finally convinced him he needed medical attention. The MD was quite sure after hearing our account of the days leading up to our visit that it was a "vicious" stingray attack and without medical attention could have proven extremely dangerous.

He strongly recommended when visiting there again (or another beach for that matter) meat tenderizer applied in a paste like form would give relief from insect bites and other creatures of the deep...look out for the jellyfish too!

sorry to bring you down,,,,it's a lovely place...and we have enjoyed many days strolling across the beach early in the morning, but found the night life to be a little overwhelming...just be safe and careful...that River Walk can become quite overwhelming and crowded at night! Just don't venture too too far and expect parking to be an issue.

I ditto the Pirate's House. We never pass Savannah without stopping there for a meal. The trolley tour is nice--you buy your ticket, they take you around the city, with stops here and there where you can get off, and then catch the next trolley, if you want to linger. The River Walk is, of course, essential.

Have a great time--Savannah is one of my favorite cities to visit. We've been going there long before Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil boosted it's popularity (if you haven't read the book and seen the movie, do try to do both before you go).

I live in the area for about 9 months a year. You didn't mention if you have children or not. If you'll be staying in Hilton Head, do plan a day for Savannah, but maybe also a day for Beaufort - along the river and its main street. I hope you will have a condo for small meals, but there are many, many restaurants from which to choose. Sage Room ($$$$) for a special occasion, Santa Fe Cafe for a great grouper meal, Bistro 17 for dinner along the waterfront in Shelter Cove. For a great quick meal, Bluffton Ale House along 278 is great. Great ribs at Dosidos in Moss Creek. You could spend a day in Harbor Town in Sea Pines, or Colignay Plaza just going in and out of all the collection of stores. You'll no doubt quickly adjust to the "low country-slow country" way of life and enjoy liesurely strolls along the ocean. If I were you, I would skip Paula Deans unless you want cafeteria style dining (my opinion was it was "mush food") Strolling along all the history in Savannah is most interesting. You could drive the back way to Savannah from HHI and park at the Westin and ferry ride over to the Savannah Riverwalk. If you have some extra driving time, check out Palmetto Blluff - tell them your going to eat when they ask you at the security gate. Quite the quaint little idylic setting to stroll around.

just a heads up on traffic into hilton head. if you've never been there in the summer it's horrible considering it's not a big city. plan to spend plenty of time on the main roads and bridge. i run shipping for a company and we are in the area several times a week w/ semi's and right now they are doing construction thru there :-/ ~ liz

I love the riverwalk with the neat shops and restaurants. My parents lived near Savannah so we went there every time we visited them. Don't know if they still do it, but they used to have "First Saturday" down there. They also have a big to-do when a ship comes in. We were lucky enough once to witness the celebration/ceremony and tour a Russian ship. Neat!

Oh--I've never eaten here, but I have the cookbook for Mrs. Wilkes Boardinghouse. The recipes are sinfully fattening. Lunch is served family-style with everyone sitting around big round tables and all the food is put on the table. No menu, just what they're serving that day. May not be for those who don't want to eat with strangers, but we've done it in PA at an Amish restaurant, the Dillard House in NC (they no longer do it that way) and also the Smith House in Delonega, GA. We've been fortunate to have good table mates.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!! We just got back from Hilton Head SC. We had 2 wonderful weeks, couldn't have asked for better weather!! Rode bikes every morning. Savannah was beautiful thank goodness it wasn't that hot. The Pirates House was great, River Walk was really neat, we took the Oglethorpe trolley and a night ghost tour(the kids loved that).
