Shout out to Granite Pro's! Please advise

Hi, I know I should probably post this in the bathroom forum, but only really see responses from the granite folks over here. Hope that's ok.

We've gutted our master bathroom and while looking for a large remnant for our counter top, we found and fell in love with a granite slab they called Golden Shore. Since the counters will be 8x2 feet, the store owner would only sell it to us as a 1/2 slab. It's still on hold, but fast forward to now. We want to have a bench & 2 shelves in the shower, and additionally we need a solid base for the threshold of the shower curb. Bill & Mongo suggested (since I hate travertine & marble) to have one fabricated out of slate or soapstone. My thinking is, we're paying for a 1/2 slab so the part we're not using is still ours, maybe I can get them to fabricate these things for us with the remnants that we've already paid for. I'm just wondering if I'm correct to assume this is reasonable and if you can give me a price range of what I can reasonably expect to pay for the fabrication. I realize it varies depending on the region, we're in Michigan, which price wise is comparable with California. Any input would be of great help, thanks in advance!

If all of your pieces will fit on the half slab that you are working with,
your fabricator should be able to fab everything - but remember -
everything has to fit so that the 1/2 slab's "yield" will work out to what you want...

Also - chances are that your Fabricator's "Stone Stretcher" is not working
so y'all are going to have to do your planning on the layout well.... If it's
any consolation, MY stone stretcher is down too = parts shortage.... ;-)

As to the cost of you should be able to expect - get a bid from your Fabricator -
Me telling you what HE should be charging YOU.....

is like HIM... telling MY customer.... what I should be charging for MY work...

Sorry - IMHO - out of respect for free enterprise AND your Fabricator -
I don't feel that It would be fair for me to comment on the price question....

get a couple of bids if you already own the 1/2 slab - check references,
and before your choose which one you feel best going with - trust your gut

Of course I'm not expecting a quote from the forum so I can use that as an expectation with my fabricator. I just really want to know if it's worth looking into and what would be considered reasonable so I can use it as a GUIDE. I don't have the option of shopping fabricators especially after he's already fabricated our counters, Once he provides a quote, I need to know if his pricing would be considered reasonable within the industry. There is nothing wrong with a consumer wanting to know what to expect. I've asked this question about other things concerning our remodel, and other pro's in the forum have been willing to comment on what they would charge for something like what I describe in their area and it has been a help. I honestly don't feel it's an unreasonable or disrespectful question especially since I've never done anything like this custom before.

Any other Pro's who can give me some insite on what I can expect? Petra???? Where are you???? Thanks.

We too have State Farm and they won't cover much the costs of the damages at all. Actually, we are very unimpressed with them to say the least. Our local agent lived and grew up here, we have not heard a word from him or his office yet we called him as they have been our insurer for 10 years. We can't even put a claim in for the damages to this house. Our structural damage is "invisible" our electrical got messed up from the lightening and probably some magnetic fields in the storm. We have to cover that. We did have some structural damage, and trees fell on necessary structures and we have someone advising us on how to get things worded etc. However the estimated costs that the insurer came up with are not appropriate for Atlanta. $1,500 to fix the driveway will not even cover the cost of breaking it up and removing it here. $800 for a fence does not even cover the cost of materials, let alone labor. However, a person on another gardening forum has offered to help us. I don't even know this person and she and her husband have offered their backs to help us get things better. One of our biggest concerns now is flooding. State Farm isn't much concerned about the impact to the structural integrity of the property itself now that we have nothing: no grass, no trees, no landscaping anymore. They do not consider that "structural" even though it was all in place to save the structures from damage. The good thing is, I have 4 jobs. The bad thing is I will be leaving my volunteer job to max. one day a week now and having to reliniquish some of the other responsibilities I had at church. That is most important to me, but I have to get this stuff paid for. They offered me full-time at work recently. This afternoon I am going to tell them I'll take it. I was offered a job teaching gardening and environmental education classes at a local private school and I'll take it. My hours at the community garden can probably be increased. However that leaves little time for now to make things around here look decent, lol. But you gotta do what you gotta do, sometimes. GGG

Almost everyone is in the same boat in the northern region and some out east pretty far south ...there is no easy answer do what you can do ...I would definitly take off in day IF IT IS SUNNY ...they will roast in there...and replace in evening...how much damage will be done it will likely depend on how cold it gets for how long each night and your cover material ... if you have only a couple of trees I'd go heavy duty and try to not have the cover touch the tops of plants use stakes or rebar to keep it off ..in my experience if it toucheds it it will damage it with the freeze and as i said get up early if it's sunny and as soon as temps are above about 35 take it off. ...david

Sta-Rite IntelliPro Pump... Please advise

I am a pool tech and would prefer the Max-E-Pro wet end over the Whisper-Flo any day for a number of reasons. 1.The Max-E-Pro has a much sturdier strainer basket; this basket commonly fails on the Whisper-Flo. Not so much on the Max-E-Pro. 2. The clear strainer lid on the Max-E-Pro is thin enough and large enough to easily inspect the strainer basket w/o removing it. the Whisper-Flo is thick and small and with age they go opaque so you will have to open it to check the strainer which will require re-priming the pump when finished. 3. The cam and ramp lid on the Max-E-Pro is the easiest to remove and reinstall than any I have ever worked with. the cam and ramp design on the Whisper-Flo is not nearly as smooth and it will require a tool to remove and reinstall and much more force/strength. 4. The Max-E-Pro has union fittings for connecting the plumbing. This is a big one because leaks kill pool pumps. Pentair (before acquiring Sta-Rite) was the only major pool equipment manufacturer to not use these fittings. The Whisper-Flo will require much more frequent plumbing repairs due to this. 5. Opening the pump for service is much quicker with the Max-E-Pros band clamp with hand nut design. The Whisper-Flo requires the removal of 6 bolts that are not always easy to access and bloodied knuckles are not uncommon. Although both of these pump wet ends are now manufactured by Pentair Pool Products they share no common parts, lineage, or engineering. They were competing pumps until Sta-Rite sold. The Sta-Rite is in its 6the generation since the late '70s. The Whisper-Flo was originally manufactured by Purex in the early '90s and it is currently in its second form, although it was groundbreaking in its efficiency, (2nd gen) lid design, and strainer basket size and set the bar for noise control. As for the seal mentioned in the above post the Sta-Rite actually uses a larger seal then the Whisper-Flo. Both are durable and failures are far between for either of these pumps. The Whisper-Flo is marginally quieter (both are very quiet pumps when properly maintained). The Max-E-Pro does flow a bit more water and with the solar heater (please give it its own pump separate from the filtration/cleaning system) and the infloor cleaning system your pool will need a high head pump. Most pool pros would agree that Sta-Rite quality is generally better across the board for pool equipment. To me it comes down to how much trouble a pump, filter, or heater would be for me maintaining it after installation and the added cost to my customers for this maintenance. Sta-Rite has addressed the common issues/failures and well. Just as they have done with their filters, and heaters. And just for the record the Sta-Rite pump typically sells for 50-100 more than the Pentair pump.

Ahhhh,I see. You're making good progress. Have you got a vanity cab or someplace else you could put the rest of it? Can't wait to see new photos. Are your lighting fixtures in? I plan to negotiate too with my top choice, which probably won't be the lowest bidder. By the way, those white stones at Denali were as Mark promised; in fact, better than he promised. Some of it is presentation (real lighting and room to step around and see every detail, hot coffee waiting, private showing) but he also hand picks every slab and that disciminating eye shows. He used to be a fabricator so he knows the business from the inside out. Going back next week to choose from 3 and getting bids tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed that it fits the budget. One fabricator told me this morning he discounts the bid for any dinali slab over slabs from other yards because Denali are such high quality he knows he won't have to work around junk spots. Proof will be in the bids.

in the southeast, what you are requesting would cost you between $35-$50sf plus or minus depending on the specific details of your job.

Fabricating teeny tiny pieces like corner shower shelves and curbs is VERY labor intensive. It's a lot harder in many respects than a counter top. The closest comparison that I could give you would be for a customer who wanted a cutting board fabricated out of a scrap of one of her countertops. It cost $200 for the fabrication only, and was maybe 18"x18". Soapstone is a lot softer and easier to work with, and a labor quote might not be as bad in it. You could potentially DIY a soapstone curb etc.

Live wires statement is the reason Kevin and I are cautious. On really small add on jobs the sf price gets tossed out. Unless you have the guy price and install on the same day as your vanity, the extra trip charges for templating and installing really inflates the price. Please consider this before you go shopping around.

James & Live_wire, thank you so much for the feed back, that is basically what I needed to know. Our granite fabricator hasn't been out to measure yet, and so I'm hopeful will help since he'll be able to do what he needs to do in one trip. But that is exactly why I'm asking because at least I am thinking about additional trips and templating, where before it wouldn't have occured to me. (I know it should have, but that's why I'm asking the granite pros! :c)
