popcorn ceiling in kitchen
Comments (17)Even if you have your ceilings tested and they're found to have asbestos, you can still remove it yourself in most states. Whether or not you consider it safe is a different matter, of course, but as far as what's allowed, it is usually possible for a homeowner to do it. The key, as others have said, is to get it really wet. It just "glops" off when you scrape it. If you google the process, you'll see instructions for how to catch the mess, keep dust from spreading through your home, and how to safely dispose of it. We had all the popcorn ceilings in our house tested for about $200. Only one little section in our entry way was found to have asbestos, but we've been systematically working on the rest of it. Unfortunately, a lot of ours was also painted, and that requires a lot more elbow grease to remove! We've decided that we're going to cover our dining room ceiling with 1/4" drywall rather than scraping it. When we get to the entry way area with asbestos, we're going to do it ourselves and just be very careful about it....See MoreCeiling Tiles over Calcamine painted ceiling?

Comments (1)The big question is - does it contain asbestos or not? You can look in the yellow pages and find asbestos testing places. Or you can look the other way, which I do not recommend, based on experience. I had an estimate of $600 for a 15 x 25 foot living room/dining room - decided to do it myself. I got a lung infection from the dust, developed pneumonia, etc. Doctor bills plus lost time from work was way over the $600. (Antibiotic pills were $400 for 10 days.) Also, the hugest mess you ever saw, anywhere. But, if you are really a die hard DIYer, please invest in a respirator, not a little painting mask. Good luck!...See MoreCost of replacing popcorn ceiling
Comments (3)I would think you could remove the popcorn yourself (if you are handy) and then have a professional finish the job for much less. My BIL bought several cheap houses in Texas in the 1980s for rentals, and he put popcorn in all the ceilings, despite my advice not to. He and my sister never listened to me, and they had to suffer because of that....See Morewilliamsem
