child friendly ranges?

I am fairly new to this whole this whole appliance thing, let alone the professional style. I have just purchased my first home and really like the look of Viking, Thermador, Wolf, DCS, Capital ranges. I do plan on having children with in the next few years and have plenty of little niece and nephews visiting.

I recently looked at the Viking, Wolf, Thermador and DCS, but non were actually set up for the full experience. I noticed on the Viking and Thermador the knobs turn with much ease. I don't really recall Wolf's. And the DCS has push and turn knobs, which would most likely deter some mischievous behavior; however, I found them to be a bit fugly. I have yet to see the Capital, up close and personal.

Also, I'm curious on how hot the exterior of the oven gets. It would be a shame if my 2 year old niece ran to hug a leg and inadvertently burn herself. I would assume this wouldn't be an issue, but ya never know.

Any input would be great

Try posting this over in the Kitchens forum, or in Appliances.

There is no such thing as a child-friendly range, IMHO. There are parents who supervise their children and teach them early what "No!" and "Hot" mean. Most of the humans in the world learned this way.

We searched for a child friendly professional style range and are happiest with Lacanche (in the same price point as a wolf). Their doors are much heavier than the wolf was and don't get hot when in use like many do. (Do not assume that they don't get hot...many get very hot!).

There is a shield you can install to keep happy hands from the stove top and knob guards. We'll probably go with the general theory of no, and a combination of the shield and knob guard. While fairegold's children may have listened to "no" the first time, I find my 18 month old tends to wonder if that silly word really does apply to him :o)

Supervision is all fine and dandy, but if the range front gets so hot you can't walk by it and touch the door...it's not safe in a home with children.

By the way, do visit the appliance forum and do a search. You'll find much information about the appliances you've listed, and others that are great. THe Lacanche is one you should look at if that heat factor on the front is a worry for you, and you'll soon see, everyone says stay as far away from a viking stove as you can! They're nightmares when it comes to the multiple service problems they all seem to have.

My SIL built a nice set of swings with 1 a tire & a large platform & big slide. It looked great but the slide was hot all the time in So. Ca. so it got used a little in winter but too hot to use most of year. The large platform would have been a fine fort with a large roof over it maybe going out over the slide. The "steps" were like a large board with strips attached so you could walk up it with a large knotted rope in your hands,rope was attached at top of ramp on an upright post, kids loved that part.Their favorite thing was trampoline with a netting around it so couldn't fall off & crack your heard. My kids favorite thing was toddlers-little swimming pool, dumped & changed water each day, got aluminum sided pool as they got about 4 & at 5 son took lessons but instructor asked if she could use my 3 year old DD.The class kind of got shamed into learning, figured if she could go under they could too! She had no fear of water & soon I had 2 excellent swimmers. Got 3 ft deep pool 12-14ft across with ladder. Otherwise they liked to ride bikes & had regular swing set with trapeze ? bar you could hang on, always hanging around or hanging from a tree if they weren't doing other 2 things. Kind of go with things they seem to like. Sandbox is a mess if not always covered every cat will find it. If they don't like sand all over don't bother. DS loved to take his trucks or matchbox cars in garden area I would make for him in shady spot just 6 ft long & 2 ft wide & he played there a lot.

Hi, welcome! That is a very good hood, IMHO, good enough for permanent installation, unless you don't care for the design. My criteria for hood selection: 1. Style - this is up to you. 2. Maintenance - Stainless steel is easy to clean and will work with any color scheme now or in the future. Washable filter is good. 3. CFM - 600 CFM is good enough for normal cooking. Multi-speed fan saves heat and air conditioning if the hood is ducted. 4. Noise level - This hood has a quiet fan. 5. Hood light - this hood has two 50W halogen GU10 bulbs, they are very bright. Don't turn them on if you don't need them. They only last about 2,000 hours and expensive to replace. I don't like halogen bulbs over cooking, you may want to replace them with GU-10 LED bulbs. Halogen bulbs are pressurized and can shatter if grease collect on the bulb. 6. Durability - should not be an issue, if they use a non-ventilated induction motor, otherwise it will be a problem. Check out Kobe hoods, which give a lot of bang for the buck. My preference is baffle filters instead of mesh filters. The Costco Summit hood you linked has mesh filters. Mesh filters tend to clog with grease which diminishes the hood's efficiency quickly. Baffle filter hoods typically cost more, but I believe the added expense is very worthwhile. You mention you are replacing a fan in the ceiling. Does that mean you will be installing new ductwork for this wall-mount chimney hood? If so, try to install an exhaust duct that is 8". Most hoods (though not all) with 600 cfms or more require an 8" duct. If your duct is smaller than that, your hood will be less effective and more noisy through no fault of the hood. Having said that, there are hoods that are made to fit 6" ducts, just not as many of them.

This is an interesting post! Was I free-range? Yes and no; I had chores (a really long list that usually took to noon or mid-afternoon to finish), but then -as long as someone knew where I was at or at least the direction I was heading towards, I was free to go and go I did! I took a newspaper route in order to buy my own bike and that bike took me all over the southern portion of the county. But it truly was a different world; most roads were gravel and the few that were paved had so little traffic you could hear the car coming from a half-mile away -plenty of time to get off the road and wait until it passed. Drivers fell into two groups, people I knew (that is, I knew their name and where they lived) and Strangers. Whether afoot or a-bike, I knew to keep a safe distance from Strangers. Known or not, everyone waved as they went passed. I saw the changes as they came: when I began delivering papers to 50 customers, all the 5-mile route was in bank-gravel roads; then they were bluestone gravel, within 3 years I had nearly 150 customers and the roads were almost all paved. I saw a report the other day: back then the county population was about 6,000 (mostly residents in the eastern and northern parts) and now the population is well over a million. The fields, streams, and forests I grew up with are now either paved, subdivisions or shopping centers. The drivers are now almost always utter Strangers, and no body waves as they pass.

I could have sworn I posted this in appliances, that must be why I'm now just reading this! Ha.

fairegold - I know there really is no "child friendly" stove; nevertheless, I do know that some are better for a household with children than others. Children can be supervised at all times and somehow still manage to find a way to get hurt.

igloochic - Thank you for your input. I appreciate it greatly. The Lacanche looks very nice, but there price range is a little to high for me. Even the range that I did wind up purchasing was a bit too much.

I wound up getting the 30" DCS AG. I haven't used it yet, so hopefully it will have been a good choice.

When we finally went to pick out our range, it was either between the Viking and the DCS. But we didn't know anyone that had a Viking and my fiance knew someone with a DCS and they love their 48" duel fuel. So we just went with it. From what I've been reading on here, you can't really go wrong with most of the brands.
