OT Question: Big TVs and Wiis

I'll ask in the entertainment forum too, but this one is SO much more active--know what I mean?

Hubby and I are not video game people--we just missed growing up with them--I do remember Pong and then Atari (and with no kids to have bought them for). Anyway, we played with the Wii at a friend's house recently and really liked it. In reading a bit about it, I learned that the graphics aren't as good as the other gaming devices, so I was wondering how good it would be on a large hi-def TV (70 inches).

Anyone have a Wii on a bigger screen TV that could comment on it for me? Our friend's TV is probably a 45-50ish one, full- rather than wide-screen and non hi-def.

Maybe I'm just making a bigger deal than needed about it, but hate to buy something that doesn't look right on the one TV it'd be used on. And not having any experience with video games at all, I don't know if this is even a concern, etc.

We have Wii on 58" HDTV. Graphics are great!

You have to get the Wii Fit, it's so cool!! Ours arrived last week and I didn't get around to setting it up until this weekend.

Our TV is 55" and it's perfect for the Wii, but our TV is huge!!! I want to get one that can be mounted on the wall or sit on a stand in the range of 45". Ours just takes up too much space in the family room

yeah, Rita - I think that any problems with messing up the tv refers to those incidents where someone let go of the remote. I've not heard of them hurting TV's. And the newer remotes have a locking mechanism on the strap that is pretty secure. The Wii Bar is the little bar that sits either in front of or on top of the TV that detects your movements. Joanne, you will like WiiFit. It keeps track of lots of stuff! And it's fun to watch other people hula hoop - LOL! I'll throw in here that Wii is also capable of playing Nintendo Gamecube games. We bought a used gamecube controller - and the Gamecube games - you can often find pretty cheap. A great game is Donkey Konga - with bongo drums. Really fun!

Sure. The Wii comes with composite video and l/r audio connections. So any TV with those connections would work. Quality-wise, using the composite video depends on the quality of the 'comb filter' in the display. Look for a TV that has a 'digital 3D' comb filter. It is likely that your older TV has a better comb filter than your newer TV. (Or possibly you need to enable the comb filter via a menu option?) The wii supports s-video. So if your set has s-video connections, the comb filter is bypassed by purchasing a new cable set. S-video cables for the wii cost almost nothing on ebay. On my 10 year old Panasonic TV, which has both a 3D comb filter for composite video, along with S-video inputs, there is little to no difference in picture quality between comb-filtered composite and s-video. Turn the comb filter off, and there are very noticable differences between composite and s-video. However, does your newer TV have 'component video' (separate red/green/blue) connections? If so, it is very worthwhile to buy a set of component video cables for it. Again, you can get them on ebay for next to nothing. And if the newer set supports High Definition, the component cables allow the use of 480p progressive scan. (Be sure to select it in the setup menu.) This is the best you can do with the wii.

rhome, I forgot you were cooking several batches - I probably would add a little more for each batch - depends on whether the wok looked oily or not. If not, then I'd add a little. Someone here, I'm afraid I don't know who, recommended "Breath of a Wok" and I got a copy for Christmas. Really helpful about technique, wok types and styles etc. Interestingly, the author makes it pretty clear that the inexpensive carbon steel woks are the best. I just heat mine until the oil begins to smoke a little. I've never timed it. I use Sclafani extra virgin olive oil. They are a local importer, in CT, and have been in the forefront of a campaign against 'adulterated' olive oils. The consumption of olive oil worldwide has skyrocketed, and the entire production of Italy cannot now possibly account for the amount being sold as "Italian". So CT is now testing oils, and discovered that several are only 10% olive oil, and the balance is groundnut oil - which is pretty serious for those with allergies. So, I'm confident with Sclafani, and their quality and flavour.

We have our TV mounted over the fireplace (love it like that, by the way!). We have a remote sensor installed and wired to our front closet. That closet is where all of our components are....vcr/dvd, dish, video games, etc. Everything is controlled by the remote. It was super easy to install the sensor, but we did it as the house was being built, so we were able to wire it all before the drywall went up. Could still be done going through the attic though. We bought our sensor from smarthome (dot) com. Here is a link to my blog where I have posted our house pictures. We have a 50" TV and DH keeps buying new add ons for the Wii, which he insists is "for the whole family." So far we have the original handheld thingy, the guitar hero and the Wii fit. Storing all these pieces and parts is pretty annoying, and truth be told, they're really just DH's toys, although since I am feeling a bight snug in the trousers lately, I might try the Wii fit.

I am not a video game type gal but my in-law sent us a Wii (really for our 4 year-old) and it's pretty cool. My DH and son love it. Our TV is 6 years old and 40" and the graphics look fine to me. I want to get the Wii Fit and the Steven Spielberg game that has something to do with building blocks.

We have a 72" in our family room. The graphics are not on par with XBox 360 or anything, but they don't look bad by any means! Wii is so fun!

We have moved the Wii between our 50 inch flat screen and a 19 inch LCD tv, and to tell you the truth it is fun on either set. The 50 inch is much better if you are playing games with multiple people, like a tennis match with two doubles. If it is just a single person than any good TV will do fine!

Okay Ladies, now you have me chomping at the bit to go buy one! Thanks, Reno fan....hearing that the graphics are okay on the 72" is what I was looking for since ours is 70". Concerns now laid to rest.......

Now to decide on all the games and accessories! Mario Kart for sure, Wii Fit probably......

I'm SO glad this topic came up :) We're 49 and 50, empty nesters with a 60" rear projection flat screen. I've kinda been kicking around the idea of buying a Wii (altho I'm TOTALLY clueless about it). We don't do video games but this seems like something we could enjoy with our daughter, sil and 2 year old (well, maybe not the 2 yo yet). I never thought about the size of the TV being a concern. Hubby and I are in our middle 40s and have never owned a video game either, so this was a "major" decision, LOL. When we played with our neighbor's Wii, we had so much fun (so it'd be a good party game even if you might not play it alone much). Hubby sure worked up a sweat trying out all the sports games like tennis, baseball, boxing, bowling, racing, etc. He liked the shooting (arcade-type, skeet shoooting stuff) games and the racing (Mario Kart) best.

Same neighbor mentioned some of her nurses and patients had been talking about it before they bought theirs. These people are "well into" adulthood and not previous gamers either. Truly it is a game for ages 3 to 93. I read in our paper a few months back that some of the "seniors" places are getting Wiis to get the residents more active and to work on hand/eye coordination, etc. I think it's neat--finally something for the older set....tired of everything geared towards teens and their shoot-em-up "grand theft auto" games!
