Two different backsplashes in kitchen?

Hello, I am choosing the backsplash for my kitchen. My cabinets will be white shaker style and my appliances will be stainless, the floor is wood and will be refinished. My designer recommended a stone backsplash. It was really rough and uneven and nubby, but beautiful. It was in rectangles and would be layed like subway tile. But I don't know if I want it all over the kitchen as the whole backsplash. But it would look really good behind the range and then on the other side of the great-room as a firelpace surround. I also like marble subway tiles, so I am wondering if it would look ok to have the rougher stone behind the range and the marble subway on the other parts. I like the marble that is less white and has some golden browns in it, so I think the colors would work well with the stone. But is it ok to mix like this?
