Round kitchen table or rectangular? (pics)
Comments (13)Les (and all) - since you picked up on the arch/placement, tell me what you think. I bought the table above only, no chairs. For now we're using the chairs that came with the old table. I have two upholstered (armless) chairs with floor-length skirts to use as head chairs when we need the leaves. Head chairs won't fit under the table unless the leaves are in (not enough clearance with the table legs), so when we don't need them they serve as the seating in my pocket office which is inset in the eat-in kitchen area. They're beige, but I wouldn't mind changing that if I could figure out how to reupholster them (or find someone to do it.) I was thinking about these for side chairs, love the massive texture they have: (I can kinda see the arch in the sloped bottom) Cons - I do have a 3 year old who spills a lot, and uses the table & chair as a napkin. I can't imagine successfully picking out spills and messes from the nooks & crannies in that rattan weaving (it's hyacinth fiber). Your comment about a chair that reflects the arch got me thinking about the chairs that come with the table set. They have a fairly subtle arch on the back: and another view: I don't typically like my dining chairs to match the table, and I generally prefer a hard seat that I can add a cushion to, vs. a soft seat. But the shape on that back is nice, no? I wonder if I could somehow add an upholstered hardwood seat... I could always get texture from something like a jute rug....See Moreround or rectangular dining table?
Comments (17)I would love to have a round d/r table. We've now entertained for 25 years on the rectangular table we purchased before we actually entertained! I usually do most of the holidays, and I curse it at each occasion:))). More so after I saw a beautiful round d/r table in an antique shop in New Orleans in the late 90's. I would have purchased it, but DH doesn't think our room could have supported the size of the table we saw. That particular table seated 12. No leaves. The round is just beautiful. Like the link posted, it is more functional all around. The seating at a round table makes for easier conversation, you aren't yelling down to the other end of the loonnnggg table. Also, IMO, round is much more interesting decoratively speaking. Post a pic if you do decide on the round, I'd love to see what you have chosen....See MoreBanquette table suggestions?
Comments (1)If this is for a casual area like a kitchen nook, you can make one. You can buy a table base and put on your own rectangular top. Lots of places sell tables bases and tops separately. You may have to drill new holes to get a rectabular top to fit but it can be done. Here is a link that might be useful: Table Bases...See MoreBanquette with 1 or 2 pedestal table?
Comments (10)As AnnieD pointed out, the length of table required may dictate the decision due to stability and required support (for heavy tops). I assumed based on the size of the example that the OP might need two pedestals. If so, you need to plan for enough overhang on the end and for roughly 4" of overlap of the table's edge to the front of the bench, all the way around. Thus, the size of the bench determines your table top size and how many pedestals may be needed (which depends on the size and weight). My caution was to ensure that any pedestal does not interfere either with the feet when sliding in or when seated, for optimal comfort (a small obstruction is OK). The example above seems fine....See Morepat_123
