Quilt show entries (pics)

Our show is finally over and these are the two I entered. The strange totem pole was a winner as most innovative. Only five winners are chosen so I'm feeling good. Most innovative is really most oddball so I will continue to make oddball things in spite of the establishment.

It's okay not to like the oddball. It's a matter of taste and some will like it, some won't. But, that's okay with me so don't worry about it.

White spots are on the camera, not on the quilt. The colored parts are reverse applique using my hand dyed fabrics. It's over 8' long and about 3-1/2' wide so won't hang just anywhere.

This also uses my own dyed fabrics and the leaves have little pink pearls on them which don't show well. I liked this one and might hang it. Those are 12" blocks so you can estimate the size.

There's a good reason why you got most innovative on that quilt. lol Love the blue one with the leaves. Beautiful!

Congratulations on most innovative. I think that would be the ribbon I would like to have. It reminds me of Alaska, love it. I can't wait till camp and we get to dye fabrics.

wow those are lovely -- thanks so much for taking the time to post the pics. I too loved that irish chain. amazing work! The one you said was your favorite -- the folk artsy scene with the people and buildings - MAN that was AMAZING. Do you know how that was done? If it was all fabric, fusible or needle turn? The shading/detail was amazing, I see in your second set of pics that it got the "creative use of thread" award so I'm thinking some of the shading was done with thread. Your second set of pictures is equally amazing -- some gorgeous applique and brilliant use of colors on some of those quilts. Ha ha, I did get a little confused when I first got to the Valley Forge pictures -- I thought, "wow, that sky looks SO REAL...! LOL.

Methinks Red does text messaging! You know that commercial where the girl is speaking in text code & the mom gets tongue-tied with it trying to chew her out? lol I love #18. Can you look at it again & tell how it was made? Are those sunflare type stripes part of the fabric or were they appliqued on, or something else?

Hi Well, no two quilt shows are created equal. You need to find out more info. We just had our little quilt show in the mountains and we had a theme "Lavendar & Lace". Didn't have anything to do with the quilts - the deco. committee chose that and decorated around that theme. Also, ours is not a juried (judged) show - all the attendee's got a voting slip and got to vote for their favorite in each category. I got two blue ribbons - one in the Landscapes and the other in Holiday. I find it fun to show off my quilts, but would probably not enter a show where they would be picked apart by a panel of judges - that's just me. We also have a food committee that keeps all us workers well fed and also the husbands who helped - for us it was a lot of fun. As I said in the beginning, every show is going to be different - have varying expectations - check it out and if it sounds like you would like it - go for it. I really like both of those! Love the colors in the totem pole and especially like the appliqued leaves. That's an idea I would try to reproduce! I can see that block done in fall colors with fall leaves in the HST portions.

The second one is beautiful, and the leaves are just wonderful. The totem pole is absolutely incredible!!! It deserved most innovative. Thanks for sharing these masterpieces with us!

I can see your eye catching totem pole in a cabin setting...especially on a high wall.
The other quilt with reverse applique & perfect points is beautiful.What talent you have & well deserved to win ribbons.

Seriously.....I think that the totem pole quilt is an absolute masterpiece..what a stunning, remarkable quilt...truly a piece of art that I would be so proud to show-off.....
I think that the innovative prize to me would be the prize that I would be the most proud to win - and I can see why you did....
AMAZING!!!!!!!
I could see that hanging in one of our Tourist Chalets here in Canada....the Totems, Eskimo carvings..these are all populate items North of the border!

They are both beautiful. The totem pole is amazing and I can understand why it won the innovative prize. The other one is more my color pallette however. Just wonderful.

I don't like the Totem pole quilt at all. I don't know why I can't stop looking at it. The empty black space is a genius stroke. It gives the totem an off balance sense of dark, isolated power. Creepy.

My first attempt at hand dyes didn't turn out as I had hoped, but I do want to try again. Yours look gorgeous.

Love 'em both for different reasons. The totem wallhanging would look great with my living room set. 8^) Any chance that you could post a close up of the quilting on it?

Both are wonderful creations but the totem is a winner in more ways then one. I truly love it. I don't have any quilts hanging but would be proud to display that one. TFS Jayne

I really like your totem pole. Does it have a story? I like the design, the fabric, the quilting and the overall design. I'm sure it is impressive at 8 feet tall!
