track lighting as vanity lighting - anyone??

I just posted this on the bathroom forum, but this forum moves faster so would like to post it here also:

I am having a hard time finding vanity lights that I really like for my master bath. I have plenty of lighting in the bathroom with recessed lights, but of course need a vanity light. Has anyone used track lighting? Or am I crazy for even going there? If you have, did it work well? Also, pictures would be appreciated. Thanks so much, Jeanie

Did you try looking at the photo galleries of this forum?
Maybe you can find there some nice vanity lights that you like. Another option is to look at houzz. they have over 1000 photos of bathrooms so you can check if architects and interior designers are using track lighting as vanity lighting or not (I would guess that you should look for contemporary and modern bathrooms to find that design but maybe I'm wrong). The idea doesn't sound crazy at all- I like tracking lights and with the right vanity it can look really nice.

We had a house with track lighting at the vanity...it was very cheap looking (wrong application) and I'd be suprised if it was actually within code since track lighting isn't built for wet areas...

One caution about comparing fixtures you see in Lowes and Home Depot, to fixtures you see elsewhere. You might THINK they're the same fixture, and indeed, to look at them, even up close, they may LOOK like the very same fixtures. But if you look at the SKU numbers, there'll usually be a 1 or 2 digit difference. The reason is that the ones made for the big box stores will be plastic or cheaper alloy metals as compared to fixtures in other showrooms. Or, there will be other shortcuts taken in the manufacture of the fixtures. I got bitten by this same bug years ago when I built my home in Connecticut. I got all my fixtures from HD, and when I showed them to a friend of mine who was a plumber, he just happened to have the equivalent of one of my fixtures in his truck to be installed on a job the following day. Just picking up the two fixtures you can tell there's a difference.

No, not crazy at all... or rather, if you are then so am I. That's exactly what I just had installed in my main bathroom last week. Couldn't find any vanity lights that worked with the look I was going for, (sleek & modern) so I used two 3-track bars over the two sinks. The electrician phoned to tell me the lights I'd bought were supposed to go on the ceiling, not the wall, but everyone who's seen them thinks they look great. They fit the room much better than any 'bathroom' fixtures would have. Another big advantage is that they swivel to point in the direction you want. I got the idea from an Ikea showroom. It opened up a lot of options to realize that you don't HAVE to use lights only in the room they're designed for. If they suit the decor no buyers will even notice they're in the 'wrong' room.

larke, that's a great idea to call local galleries on what they use. I definitely would want something simple, but aesthetically pleasing like the lighting in an art gallery. I am also a little worried about it looking odd. Honestly, I am not a big fan of track lighting on beams. While my beams are not terribly spectacular right now, they were one of the things we liked about the home and I feel like putting the track on them would take away from the beams. wi-sailorgirl, do you have any pictures of your lighting on one of your exposed trusses? Maybe I just haven't ever seen it done properly. I definitely would not want to do just regular track lighting. I would do something intended for the wall that stands out from the wall a few inches. I've seen some in an office building that looked fairly simple but pretty. I am really struggling to find pictures, but here are some ideas of the types of wall-mounted track lighting that I am considering.

Doesn't most, if not all, track lighting use halogen-type bulbs? Those get really, really hot (this coming from someone whose master bath still has Hollywood-type lights, and when all 8 or so bulbs are working--and those are plain small round bulbs--it gets darn hot! So hot that I haven't replaced 3 bulbs that burned out. Nobody but me sees them, so I'm OK with that! And I don't need any "artificially created" hot flashes!)

The track lighting I've seen are very bright lights, and I'm not sure it's the most flattering light for the bathroom.

pammyfay, I'll have to check to see if most track lighting uses halogen bulbs.
