How much space needed between table and island?

I will have an island that will back up to the breakfast table. Then, the table backs up to sliding doors. I have a similar situation in my current kitchen except in my current house, my island stools are not backing up to the table. In the new kitchen, they will back into the table. I am trying to decide how much space I need. My table is 35 inches wide and about 6 feet long. It seats six. The sides with the two chairs will be the ones close to the island. Anyway, I think I have about 127 inches between the sliders and the island. I am trying to decide if I can curve the island countertop or not. If I curve it, it will be slight--3 inches. I will lose those three inches in the space for the table. Am I making any sense? I think my question is, how much space would be good between those table chairs and island chairs? In my current house, I have about 5 feet between the island and table chairs, but the island chairs aren't right there--though we do have a trash can there (in that five feet of space).

Rule of thumb is that a dining chair or stool takes up 2 square feet just for the chair. Add another foot either direction for average size knees and elbows. So that's 3 square feet. You need push back space and walking space. That's nine feet just for that aisle. You can obviously compact this by pushing chairs and knees under, but if you look at a lot of those nice magazines they have these huge kitchens that actually have that.

Will you be using the slider a lot? Assuming yes, 127" - 35" = 92" for both aisles. If you give the slider side 3.5' = 42" which is enough for someone to get by if there are seated people, that leaves 50" for the other aisle. It'll be mighty tight if big people are seated on both sides. If it's an either or it should be fine. You might think about getting pedestals instead of legs, or even stretcher bars on the legs, so that they don't get tangled easily.

I think you can get away with your three inch curve, but I probably would leave it straight so as not to have even a little bit of a pinch point.

I think you are right that I should leave it straight. I am going to have my island moved back a couple of inches. It won't hurt me on the other side. I don't feel cramped in my current house and it is a big kitchen. This is a big kitchen too, so I don't want to cramped there either. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

There are drawers in that room right now. Once they are cleared out, I am going to measure and layout the table and see...

This is how you determine the height and placement of the pendants. 1. Have someone hold the pendant 2. then have the tallest person in the house stand at the edge of the island and lean into the pendant. They should clear it. 3. Now move to the other side of the island and repeat 2. 4. Then try it with another location of the pendant. So the combination of the location and height should be such that the tallest person clears it.

Not an island, but a peninsula with the DR table on one side. We have approx 48" from table-edge to counter-edge if we move the table as far into the DR as possible w/o "exposing" the chandelier to heads! It's OK if no one is seated at either and we can scoot by if someone is sitting at one...but if there's someone sitting at both, there's no room to get by and someone has to move out of the way. I wish we had another 10" to 12" or so. (Our problem is our chandelier...when we took down the wall b/w the DR & Kitchen and added a peninsula w/seats on the DR side & "inside" the DR, we forgot to take into account the fact that the center of the DR was moved by a foot or so away from the kitchen. Our chandelier is in the center of the DR so it limits how far into the DR & away from the peninsula our table can be moved.)

I actually made my kitchen smaller because I did not like the larger aisles between the cooktop/island and the sink/ island. I have two islands in my kitchen and the second one is small and serves as a landing area between my sink, cooktop and fridge. It is not in the way for any of these items but is within a turn/step of each. Before I moved the east kitchen wall in 20", it was a turn/step/step between the sink/island and cooktop/island. I used a small cabinet that was the size I wanted for the island and lived with the setup for several months and finally moved the range and cabinets out from the wall 20" and after a month I knew I liked that distance so much better so the wall got moved. The dining room will have a nice alcove for the hutch and the extra room there is also nice to have. I may be one of the few people who has had the luxury (if you can call it that LOL!) of having a kitchen setup where I could rather easily rearange appliances (other than the sink) and see what I liked. We moved the kitchen to a new room and simply cut apart the old cabinets and set them up temporary until we could finish the kitchen (that was five years ago) and I've lived in four modified layouts before settling on the final one that gives my a kitchen that works great for the way I cook. My aisles are near 40" now so they must have been around 50" before. The small island will be movable so if it ever happens that I need more room in the kitchen (like having folks over to bake cookies or can veggies) I can move the whole thing out of the way. Cathy

How much space do I need between wall and fridge to open it fully?

Manual says minimum of 2 5/8" for door to open 90". For the full 125" opening, clearance would need to be 10". We tested it yesterday by moving the fridge around and found that about 4" would be enough to open the door a bit past 90" and all drawers and shelves can slide out fully should I ever need to take them out for cleaning. One possible option is to put in a narrow utility cabinet in the corner and have the fridge go next to that. Ikea's narrowest is 15". I'd need to double check exactly where the water line is to make sure it would still be in the fridge area and not get stuck behind the utility cabinet. That may be my best option to avoid a large filler. Thanks all!

Leave it straight...those 3 inches are important!

We have 48" b/w our DR table & the peninsula edge and it's too narrow...if someone is sitting at either one (& the unused chair or stool is pushed in), it's a squeeze to get through. If someone is seated at both the table & peninsula...forget about getting through!

We had planned a wider aisle, but when we put the chandelier in the DR we centered it in the room (& where the old one was)...forgetting that we now had peninsula seating that takes up more space on the edge of the DR! The chandelier should have been further into the room. If we put the table where we'd like it for aisle clearance, the chandelier is in the aisle & we hit our heads on it! (Besides, it looks terrible!)

One of only a few regrets...but nonetheless, a regret.

Buehl--thanks. I think you are right. It don't know that the 3 inch curve will be that dramatic anyway--probably not worth giving up the space. Thanks for chiming in.

Kelleg: I TOTALLY agree with Buehl on this one. One of my only kitchen regrets is the placement of my chandelier in my DR. I wanted it pushed more towards the LR and DH wanted it where it is. It was the ONLY request he had, so.. I said OK. If it was placed correctly, I wouldn't have the tight sqeeze I have between my peninsula stools and my DR table chairs. Thank goodness there are worse things in life! Bottom line, give yourself as much room as your space will allow. Good luck!

HA! I'm going through the same problem right now as well - we centered our chandy in the breakfast nook, which makes sense, but now our aisle between island (the side, not seating area) and a potential table is causing some squeeze! I think I'm going to end up with only 3 feet of clearnance. Ah, what I wouldn't give for another 2 feet!
