FX180 pricing

You could have knocked me over with a feather. I just got the estimate for FX180 laminate (that's the new one that looks like granite). For roughly 100 sq ft of counter with a beveled edge, (found out that you cannot do bullnose when you have lots of turns). . .$7900!!!!

how roughly? how much more for the beveled edge?

I could understand it being half again or so the cost of regular laminate, but that's ridiculous. maybe someone who put it in will post with how much they paid per sq ft.

I was quoted about 22.00 sq ft for regular laminate (Formica) installed.

was that a regular fabricator or HD/lowe's?

I can't remember off the top of my head but for post form it's about 30-35 a lineal foot where I work. Custom square edge is more, but I'm not sure how much. $7900 for any laminate sounds insane, unless you're doing a hockey rink or something.

I am one of the few who like laminates. We recently did a DIY refacing in our kitchen. We looked at all different types of counter tops and decided on premium laminate. The durability and ease of care is what convinced us. Granite is beautiful, but I didn't want to seal it, solid surface scratches too easily, not practical in my much used/lived in kitchen.. We went with Formica fx180, their premium line in antique mascarello. I also love Wilsonart HD, but they didn't have the color I wanted.The Wilsonart has a higher gloss to it than the Formica fx180, which I did like and probably would have purchased if it came in the pattern/color I wanted. It is true that premium laminate is not much cheaper than solid surface or the lower priced granites, but it works for our family and I am happy with it. Both Formica and Wilsonart will send you larger samples for free if you go to their websites to order them. The Formica was a large 12 x 12 size sample, (The wilsonart was a 4 x 5 think) This sample still comes in handy, I take it with me when I go to pick out paint and backsplash tiles. And I did test it, scratching it with sandpaper, knives, brillo, etc, its tough stuff!The sheet laminate is not expensive, its the installing that costs. But if you can get it in a preformed counter top that might be cheaper. Still, for us it was the right choice, my last kitchen's laminate was 28 yrs old and was still in great shape and it took plenty of abuse from our 3 kids, the durability and ease of care and cleaning is what helped me to choose laminate again..

Rebar is essentially what you described in your post. It is a thin strip of metal, maybe about 3/4" wide. It can be steel, zinc, iron, a metal that does not bend/inflexible. When used outside the glass, the rebar is placed on its side and is soldered to the joints/solder seams. Rebar from these materials can be challenging to solder since they don't take solder well. You can tin a thin wire (like a paperclip) to soldered seams to hold wire in place and then twist the wire to the rebar. I couldn't see any metal rebar on the piece, which is why I suggested. Where is it located? Usually it is fairly easy to spot since, especially in your piece there are not a lot of straight lines. Rebar can be unsightly since often it goes across the entire piece (in a straight line) and can be visible to the naked eye. Depending on size of the piece, there are often several rebars added (all going in same direction). One can see them in a lot of old stained glass construction, like in church pieces, etc. The preferred method today is to plan reinforcement during design stage and hide it within two pieces of glass during construction stage. Did the fireplace screen come encased in metal channel framing around each piece? When screen was dismantled, was the metal frame around the pieces left in tack? I would think so, since each of the perimeter glass pieces are attached/soldered to the metal framing. Metal framing also helps keep the piece together. I would not recommend using plexiglass. It's too flexible, so I don't think it would not buy you anything. The glass piece is much heavier than the plexiglass. Following your thoughts, a better option than plexiglass, *might* be clear glass. Glass doesn't bend, per say, it just breaks. HTH!

Hard water? Definitely avoid darker counters. Also dark sinks and ORB faucets. I won't even have chrome, too many water spots. You are right to avoid shiny granite, the hard water will leave dull wipe marks. Solid surface does come in a lot of nice colors, we considered it, but since we wanted darker counters, rejected it because it scratches fairly easily and we were told the scratches would show up as white. If you want a light color, I think its a good choice.(The light color won't show the wipe marks too much) We chose premium laminate, not a popular choice here on GW but we liked the low maintainence of it. Our last laminate counter wore like iron, 28 yrs and 3 kids later, with barely a scratch, so we decided to go with laminate again. I'm not sorry, I do love my new counters. Will it matter for resale? Possibly, but I doubt it would be a deal breaker. Yes I do have a top mounted sink, which I am fine with but I believe you can get undermount sinks with laminate too. (By the way, you should look into a better water softener, hard water can do some damage to your pipes, maybe a new softener can handle the extreme hardness of your water)

>I don't know if the price has skyrocketed or if it's just the fact that I live in a very high labor cost area, and our kitchen has irregular shapes such as a window to the dining room - but it was certainly not an inexpensive option. It's not cheap around here (East coast FL) either, unless you go with the prefab grab and go laminates from the stock areas at the big box stores. Otherwise, one reason formica is less popular in this area is that it's perceived as over-priced these days. Some of those styles are very handsome, but there's nothing budget-friendly about them in this particular market.

that's what I thought. I think my kitchen is about 100 sq ft. - total. maybe a bit more. that's a lot of counter top...

Oh, I agree that it is insane. And the "rough" is probably only off 5+/- sq. feet. It makes me wonder if this is their way of saying they would rather not do the work, but their price for Corian was $8200 and Quartz over 9K. I figured that since this was a local place they might be cheaper. Ha! Now I wonder what Home Depot and Lowes would charge for the FX180.

I got a separate quote for Granite at another place entirely and it came in at 6K.

100 square feet of contertop is roughly double the size of the average kitchen's countertops. What are the dimensions of the countertop? Are they a standard 25 1/2" deep or are you using a custom depth? What about the backsplash? Standard rolled backsplash, flat deck, or custom beveled set on backsplash, or custom full height backsplash?

While the 180 is expensive, it's not as expensive as granite or solid surface, even if you go custom. Maybe 2/3 of the way towards a granite top if you're custom sizes and full height backsplash, but there' no way it should cost more than granite! If you'll post your layout and answer the above questions, I'll see if I can't come up with how many square feet and what we'd charge for the same thing.
