We have Hospice helping us out with Mom now

As of Monday, the Doctor told us that my Mom is terminal and she had pulled her feeding tube out some time during the night. According to her wishes, another tube will not go in. The Doctor told us it wouldn't be very long.

Hospice has come in and helped us tremendously and for that we are grateful. Today, Mom teared up a bit and "talked" to family members that have already passed away. She doesn't recognize any of us and is in quite a bit of pain.

Hospice is managing her pain and using Morpheine(sp?) patches to do so as she is not able to swallow.

Please continue to pray for her to not have to suffer anymore. I will stay in contact with you all with updates when I am able.

I'm sorry your family has to go through this.
I pray for a quick and painless passing for your Mom.
I know my Dad talked to people 'on the other side' many times during his illness and death and I know those people were there...I just couldn't see him. We laugh now that those people were sent to get him and he wouldn't go until the right person showed up...

I'm so sorry! I went through this with my Mom and I pray that your Mom will not linger. I am sure she is looking forward to that happy reunion with those loved ones who have gone before. My prayers continue for you and your family. Bettye

You could try Oregon. It isn't south, but it certainly isn't conservative--at least most of it isn't--and the winters are mild. It is said that there are more PhD store clerks in Oregon than any other state. There are places in Oregon with reasonable land as there are so few jobs that pay well. Progressives have driven most of the employers out of the state, but the Progressives who live there love it--that is why there are so many well-educated folks working retail; they don't want to leave!

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts and prayers. Mom is failing faster than was projected. We are probably looking at a weeks at most...unless she breaks out of this pattern of decline. The nurse comes this morning, so we will know more then. The terminal agitation is ramping up. Several grandchildren were in this weekend. She went from actually having a good conversation with one on Thursday to blank stares at the ceiling and incoherent speech on Friday. The oldest and most faithful grandson flew in from Boston to experience Friday only to come Saturday morning, and after she got oriented, he was blessed with a real conversation with her. They said their "I love yous". By Sunday when we returned from church early afternoon, we saw the the huge decline. Two more grandkids came and had to say their tearful goodbyes without Mom being very aware. A married grandson and his wife, from 5 hours away, saw her Sunday morning and my brother thinks mom knew they were there. Systems are starting to shut down more, but we are still feeling blessed to be able to have her here to care for. I completely agree with Tamar. I am in your same situation - 12 year old SD we have had custody of for 7 years. She has had weekend overnights EOW the entire time, and each time she returns home she either hates me or hates her mom, depending on how things went and what she was subjected to there. One day she wishes I was her "real" mom, the next her BM can do no wrong. It's eaten me up trying to rationalize with her w/o just saying "your BM is worthless!" IF they don't want to listen no list of things you have done that the BM has not will be accepted. Finally I realized I was dealing with a 12 year old and that I just had to let it go. If she gave me the "you're not my mom" attitude I gave her the "you're not my daughter" attitude . . . which meant her going to dad or BM for the things I always did . . . and finding out she was out of luck. After a few times I think she got the point, and though things aren't perfect now we have reached a more even playing field. I still cringe when she talks about how great it was that her mom came to one of her games when I coach the team, but what do you do? In your heart you know you are doing the right thing, and since you can't lock her in a closet until puberty is over that's about all you have going for you! Putting Vicks near--or in--the nostrils is a very bad idea. Plenty survive without incident, but when the actual substance (rather than just the smell) is inhaled it can lead to bad things. Onion plasters can do a lot of good, but you also have to be very careful not to burn the patient. You know the story the moms always told about the girl in the shorts who sat on the hood of the car getting her butt burned when it only felt "warm"? Same thing. The last thing someone with pneumonia needs is a second degree burn on the chest. That said, the heat and fumes from the onions can be beneficial. The problem with the onion around the house or by the bed stuff is that we only have the positive outcomes. In a properly done experiment, we'd learn if there were people who received no benefit, and could determine by the numbers if those with very good outcomes got them by chance, or if the onion was a likely factor. The fact is that most cures are just stopgaps while the body does its healing as its supposed to. A lot of medicine is like that. It's more about treating symptoms and preventing secondary infections than actually curing. Antivirals, if taken right away, can work wonders. They actually do cure. The rest of what they have to treat colds is just to make you less miserable. It's quite possible that the cut onion by the bed could release fumes that also ease misery. It's highly unlikely that it cures, however. Eating onions and garlic is documented as helping the immune system, so eating them are preventative as well as tasty. :) The thing about talismans, however, is that so long as you don't let your belief in them prevent you from seeking care when more is needed, they're harmless, and if decorating your house with onions pleases you, it can't hurt.

I feel your many emotions and pain. My Dad passed away just 4 weeks ago. Once Hospice steps in, the time is very short. Be there with your Mom while you can, it will be so "empty" once she is gone. The blessing will be no more pain for her. You are in my thoughts !

Thoughts and prayers for you and your mom. Hospice are wonderful people. They just spent the last three months helping with my uncle dying of cancer. He passed two weeks ago today. He too talked to family that were gone and once he told us they weren't ready for him yet. At least he's in no more pain.

Nan, I wish I could reach out and give you a big hug! I understand how hard this is to watch.

The good news is that Hospice's most important job right now is to keep your mom as comfortable as possible, and they do that job very well. You may have to be your mom's advocate and let them know if/when she needs more morphine. There is no reason for her to have pain.

Please continue to talk with your mother, even if you don't notice her responding. Hospice told me that it was likely, or at least possible, that my mother could hear me. I took their advice and told her how much I loved her, what a great mom she was (in fact I said she IS a great mom, not she WAS). I held her hand often and told her these things repeatedly.

If my mom couldn't hear me, that wasn't important. But if she COULD, telling her all those things and letting her know I loved her and was with her was my last gift to her.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, but I'm glad you and your mom have the Hospice angels on your team. I'll pray for you, your mom and the rest of her family. Take care.

My best friend is going through this same situation with her dad right now. They don't expect him to live through the weekend....but he is Very stubborn!

We had Hospice w/ my Dad and they were angels. May her release be w/ as little pain as possible.

Hospice is fantastic. i don't know what we would have done without them.
My grandmother, in her last days, not only spoke to departed family members(especially my grandfather and her father), she would reach both arms out as if to embrace them. I do believe she saw them reaching out for her.

Nan...my heart and compassion goes out to you & yours during this most torturing time. I went thru the same thing with both my parents-my mom died a slow, painful death in a nursing home & no amount of morphine could help as a massive stroke took 98% of her brain that controlled respiratory & was inoperable for the gangrene in her leg. My dad was also in hospice care. It's SO true..As time draws near?..if you get close to your mom's ear & almost shout? She can hear everything you say-she just won't be able to respond. My dad wouldn't give up and let go...the whole family was bedside. The hospice nurse told me they have this 'unsettling feeling' to stay until they hear voices of all their loved ones. I arrived-he passed 4 hours later. ((to you and your mom))

My prayer has been said that your dear mother passes quickly and painlessly into the open, waiting, loving arms of our Creator, where she will suffer no more and will enjoy life eternal that is promised to us. Take comfort in knowing you will be reunited with all of your loved ones in time ahead.

Hospice is such a big help....I'm thankful they are helping you. They were a blessing to us when my dad was leaving us. ((hugs)) from one daughter to another.

As others have said, continue to talk to her even if she can't/doesn't respond. If she doesn't actually hear the words, she'll sense your presence. May God grant an easy passage from your arms into His.
