Fast and Fun Quilt Top Pic

I am the biggest sucker for novelty prints. IÂm even a bigger sucker if the print is retro. I found this fabric at JoannÂs last year and fell in love with it. But IÂm not a cat person, go figure? Anyway, I bought 1.5 yards not knowing what I was going to do with it. I finally decided on a pattern in my EQ5. When I finished cutting all the pieces, I only had 1 inch left as scrap. Talk about lucky! I love it and this oneÂs for me, me, me! Well, usually all the quilts I make are for me. LOL! This is just the top. I wonÂt get it back from my LAQ for several weeks and I couldnÂt wait to share it here.

Thanks gardengal19 for answer most of the questions. : D Your absolutely right it is germinated on paper towel then I put it on top of a cake lid filled with soil. The roots go right through the paper towel into the soil. It's working out very well. I have some more of the same type of lettuce growing in little pots and they are growing much slower than these guys. I don't plan on transplanting these guys. I want a sort of "Micro Green" garden so I'm going to keep them in this container and snip the lettuce as needed. I know that it's a lot of seedlings but I think it will be ok. Thanks everyone for you kind comments.My son loves it he also asked me LOL will it be as warm as his halloween quilt which he loves............He is also asking me about the backing because he said he loves the backing on the halloween quilt it is sooooooooo soft LOL! He also said he also likes it square and it worried if I round the top off it will make the quilt smaller........all I can say he is just going to have to be surprised LOL. Red

Once something starts bugging you it is hard to "just let it go" -- I got REAL GOOD and taking things apart when I did my kaleidoscope quilt. (Even literally put darts in a couple blocks to get it to match right!) I noticed you have the four corners of blocks in the center perfectly matched -- the little muslin squares. I would let that intersection go as far askew as I needed to to get the black parts lined up. Since the muslin is roughly the same color it's really "one square" in the center -- IMO, matching it's points is not important. Where as the black/white intersections jump out at you. I would get those black squares matched up and sewn together. (Taking at least the one in like I suggested above) THEN, if I had a significant difference in size between the top and bottom muslin pieces in the center, I'd take the one that is larger and tighten its seam up -- Go up higher - maybe right below where the black starts and resew the seam angling inward ever so slightly so that by the time I reach the bottom my seam allowance is more than 1/4 inch -- I've sewn at an angle. Too extreme an angle and it won't lie flat but I think you can get away with enough to take up the slack. And once it's quilted who will know?! Clear as mud?!

Great first quilt!!! Look on your batting wrapping and it will give suggestions as to how close (or far apart) the quilting should be. The one I am using now suggests 2". I am just learning to machine quilt (about 5 years now lol) and I love anything that doesn't have to be marked. With SITD it is sometimes not easy to stay in the 'ditch', but when the quilt is washed it doesn't show as much. The scrappy Irish Chain I am making for my sister is going to be mostly quilted on the diagonal. You can always mix it up and do different quilting designs. Have Fun! Rosa

That looks both interesting and easy, and with those colors and the cat pattern, as Teresa said, it is delightful! I love it and I *am* a cat person! So if you ever want to get rid of it....;0)

Did you draft the in EQ, or did you use an existing EQ pattern?

That is one terrific quilt! I love the colors and the patterns and way it exudes smiles and happiness. It makes the theme from The Pink Panther play in my mind.

Wow gosh everyone Â Thank you! You all brightened my morning.

To answer some questions Â

The pattern already existed in my EQ5. I only made a couple of little changes.

I plan on backing it with black and having it quilted with pink thread. What do you think???

Dianne - My DH said the exact same thing about the Pink Panther. I even had to look up the song online because trying to remember the melody was driving me nuts.

I made a mock up of the pattern for those of you who are interested. All the measurements are for CUTTING, not finished. The black is cut 1.5" wide. The finished quilt measures 50 x 64. I will say this went really fast.

Isn't EQ great? I have some beautiful magnolia prints that I've been trying to decide how to use...now I can think "outside the box" and maybe come up with something.

It's gorgeous! The black gives it extra pizzazz. I'm going to have to try that pattern with some novelty fabric I have. Just beautiful. I keep going back to look at it. TFS....Geraldine p.s. I did this post earlier-either it got lost in cyberspace or I didn't submit it-probably the latter, LOL.

Just fabulous (yes, thanks to the poster who linked it directly)!

Love it all, the fabric, yes very Pink Panther, the colors & esp. the setting. How to you get the black sashing so even looking (or is it pre-made tape, bias maybe)?

A caution: pls. think twice before backing it w/ solid black. Black is a notoriously unstable dye/pigment. We learned this quickly at Textile School.

Recently, a favorite teacher at my LQS showed a beautiful foundation pieced work, which had a hole or 2 near the middle of complex piecing. She explained it was the solid black, that other than being unstable dye as I knew, she said fabric producers often overdye black over other fabric 'mistakes' & that can make even more problems. She said over time the black just degraded (rotted) away. She suggested rather than solid flat black, use a small black tone on tone or tiny print; they might fare better over time.

Forewarned is forearmed especially on such a beautiful work, well done indeed!
