getting your own builders insurance

I am considering being the GC on our addition (kit, fm, mudroom, and master suite). Our builder/carpenter seems to prefer that we be our own GC. He says he can give us the names of subs, but has said that we need to get our own insurance. He is suggesting that this is why his cost to us is less.

Does anyone know about this? Do you always need to get your own insurance as a GC? How does this save someone so much money?

Thanks.
