My first knitted project!

Okay Ladies this is my first knitted project I did on my knitting machine...now DS wants me to get him a knitting machine LOL!

Well anyway here it is I did this today!I knitted the hat and made the pom pom! This is called a roll edge.

Great Job Red! I remember knitting one by hand and it took me over a week to do it and then the person I gave it to never wore it.
He ended up throwing it in the garbage. I was very ticked at him when I found out.

Very nice! The little pom-pom almost looks like it could be a topknot of very pretty hair!

Congrats on teaching yourself! I learned to knit when I was 13 from my aunt. She had us(me and my cousin) start with mittens. You learn ribbing, increasing, decreasing and putting things on a holder to work with something else, then go back to stitches on the holder. We did two-needle mittens which also require sewing up a seam. Later I did mittens on double pointed needles. Was your scarf in garter stitch(knit every row)? With the mittens you would also have to do the purl stitch. Good practice and because they are small you get a finished project quickly. One thing you want to do is check your gauge before you begin(sometimes mitten patterns don't have gauge). I have never checked my gauge(lazy). Sometimes not a problem, but mostly it is a problem not to check. Sweaters, hats, anything with a fit issue could come out wrong if done in the wrong gauge. I'm doing a project now where I checked the gauge, I thought, only to find after doing the back of a sweater, I was off still. So, I pulled out and started over with different needles. We'll see how it comes out. I'm taking a knitting class next month where hopefully she can teach me how to do the gauge check properly among other things. I need to learn how to crochet. The first thing I completed believe it or not was socks. They were one of the main reasons I started knitting I saw all these cute toasty warm pretty little socks and just wanted to see if I could make them. I have them down now pretty well. I'm now enjoying many other projects as well. Currently working on a few things. I like to have a couple to a few projects at once going on in case I get bored of one I can switch to another. I'm currently making "gift" scarves with soft yarn in a loose knit and beads strung at the end, a few shawls? in similar style and a cable blanket..... I'm looking to start some gloves and a few more socks and a intarsia or fair isle ? blanket and am currently looking for a nice knit beret pattern. :)

Thanks, Donna. I do not have a digital camera, so no hope of a picture to show off. I might get my friend to post the musical afghan I made my son a few years ago as she took a picture of that afghan. The way you described is how I picked up stitches, and I will try the looping the extra stitch over the first pick up. I understood your instructions. The "hole" was not bad, almost the same as a typical space between stitches, but I would rather err on the side of the additional stitch for fear the little hole may open up in the wearing of the sock or laundering it. Instead of a 1 year old size, I ended up with a 5-7 year old size sock from a 1 year size pattern, it seemed to me. I made a 1 year size cardigan of the same DK yarn, so I thought I would use the extra yarn to make a sock style bootie in size 1. I have now bought size 1 double pointed needles to have another go at it. I could not find such small dowel, or I would have made these needles too. Next time, I will locate some bamboo skewers and turn them into dp size 1s. I make a set of 5 dps from dowel for about $1. I bought 5 dps in size 1 in the cheapest wood/bamboo for $9 or $10. I am such a cheapskate, that it kills me to spend this kind of money for something I could make!

Thanks everyone.Linda I am not giving up quilting but I think this winter I am going to be doing a lot of learning on this knitting machine....and knitting is a real challenge for me LOL!

That looks great and very warm. I tried hand knitting and got fruastrated because I could make it faster crocheting. I have never used a knitting machine. I am interested in hear an update on your progress.

I think it is great. Have you been able to use some of that real fuzzy new yarn that is out? I can't crochet with it can't find the stitches but it would be nice to use on a machine I think.

Minnie that is what I used to make the pom pom with for my hat.I haven't tried it yet on the machine... cause it is so bulky but I think it would make some cute scrafs.....

Wow, the stitches are so even! I am so glad to see the surge in knitting popularity. With that has come to be so many neat yarns available now.

Minnie, I couldn't crochet with the fuzzy fun fur either, but it is much easier to knit with.
