Removed popcorn on ceiling - Now What??

We removed the popcorn texture from the ceiling and just had our recessed lights installed in our family room. The room is approx. 400 sq ft.

I need to have the ceiling readied for paint. There are a couple of holes (from former lights) that need to be patched which we could do. But, I'm thinking it needs a skimcoat before it can be primed. I've been reading various posts concerning that and was thinking I could do it myself, but I want the ceiling to be as smooth as possible.

Who could I call to have this done? Would it be a drywall person?

Take a look at the pic this is how ceiling looks without the popcorn texture.
