The CertainTeed Solaris shingle is eligible for the $1500 energy tax rebate. I have a 30 square roof and the materials cost difference between the Solaris and a 30 year shingle was $100 per square, ie $3000 or about 30% increase over the total bid for the 30 year. Discounting the tax rebate the increased cost for Solaris is about 15%.
CertainTeed says that the Solaris decreases roof temp by 20 degrees. They don't translate that into attic temp or cooling costs. So I can't figure out how long it will take me to make back my $1500.
I live in NC on the flatlands. I have a steep gable roof that faces due north / south. The second floor has electric heat and I use about 10,000 KWH per year for the whole house.
Interested in anyone's thoughts, including the track record of the shingle.
