Thanks so much for finding that info on the Scottsville Rose! I'd had no luck finding it in my search, and knew I recalled something about it being the oldest rose in Texas..... They really have some good things in that sale - Greg Grant [whose brother is my horse veterinarian - talented family!] is always coming up with some new and interesting plants. I have a Pink Marechal Niel [hope to see it bloom this year] and a climbing sport of Belinda's Dream, now called Farmer's Dream. Hope it blooms this year - Greg thinks its a once bloomer only, but foliage is really healthy looking. This year they are offering Fragrant Snowflake Rose, a single of the white banksia double one, Queenie rose - a rambler [wichuraiana], Thousand Beauties Rose [Tausendschon], Big Momma's Blush Tea Rose and Satin Cream Tea Rose - cant wait to get my hands on every one of them! I will post photos of them as soon as they bloom. If any of you all are within driving distance of the sale - April 5 - you REALLY should try to make it. Its really a hoot - they make you stand back of a long plastic ribbon until the exact stroke of 9am....there is a blue grass band from the college that starts playing Foggy Mountain Breakdown when the sale starts - the announcer begs everyone not to run over the helpers [people tend to stampede, its like the Oklahoma land rush], there are hundreds of people, all dragging various contraptions to haul plants in - rain or shine, there is a huge turnout. I wouldn't miss it for anything! I pore over my list for days, then print it out. I have 2 hard core plant friends that come with me - I load my golf cart up and bring it with me - I can haul more stuff on it and its a really long walk to get from the parking area to the plant sale. We have this wagon we pull behind the golf cart. We usually go the day before and find out where everything is that we want - we are always there early to get up at the front of the line. This is one of my absolute must do things of the year - they have one in fall too. Plus.....the Mize Azalea Garden, when in full bloom [who knows when that is going to be this year!] is unbelievable! Then in fall, the Japanese Maples are a sight to behold. I have some good photos somewhere of both seasons that I will try to find and post. I wonder if anyone has this Scottsville Rose, never heard it mentioned. Once mine gets going, I would be happy to share cuttings with anyone that wants them - same with the other roses. Judith

My answer is: nothing. I love designing spaces, and I would want very much to start with a blank slate wherever I go. Oh, I may take a few seeds from plants that are good all-around fillers, but I would really want to design from the bare ground up. An arresting conversation. I've been thinking along these lines for a year or so now, without really realizing I was doing so. My DH has been muttering for years upon years that we should finish up the house (it's been in a continuous state of remodel for.e.ver) and sell it. I've been constantly expanding the garden, not really concentrating on the idea of leaving until about a year ago when, all of a sudden, he started actually doing the things that needed to be done to get us out of here. I figure we have about 1 1/2 years of work left to do on the interior, then it's on to other pastures. I continue to plant, transplant, sow, etc., but I didn't realize until today, while reading this thread, that a lot of my recent planting decisions have been centered around ease of maintenance and creating more of an "outdoor room." I've never really cared about ease of maintenance before, and I know for a fact that the "outdoor room" concept comes directly from home improvement television shows, and is almost entirely to do with increasing perceived value. There are a lot of reasons why a person would have to be a gardener to really want our home (no grass anywhere, for one), and an avid gardener with an appreciation for the offbeat, at that. I guess I've been thinking that if we can sell the garden as an extension of the living space, rather than something for the neighbors to look at, we might have a better shot at non-avid-gardeners without ripping out half of what I've done and sowing grass seed. Of course, I'm an avid gardener and I wouldn't want to move into a home with an already-established garden. Lots to think about.

Bob Walsh covers Mimi's egg-rooting method in his book on "How to grow plumeria-frangipani anytime anywhere", btw. Still miss the "Aloha Plumeria" forum though...and Mimi, too. I hope she's happy in her life, and stress-free. I'm currently rooting a bonus plumeria with an egg, and an Oahu Star cutting w/o one, -since I only had one egg available when potting them up. The bonus cutting is showing tip changes on it, already, but I can't consider this a fair test, as the Oahu Star cutting was considerably thicker than the mystery (gift) cutting was, when I rec'd them. To do a fair comparative test, I think I'd have to use 2 cuttings from the same source and root them the same way, (except for placing an egg under only one of them).

Yes Kristi! I would strongly recommend it. I will tell you how I found this place. It was about 5 years ago. I wanted a banana tree in the worst way. I was coming back to my house with roomate, and he said look! There's a banana tree! I did a u turn on a busy street and flew into that driveway and walked out with my banana tree! That was it, I was hooked to that place. I ave bought my vanilla orchid there, a navel orange tree that didn't make it due to cold temps when our aparment was being remodeled. I got my first mango tree there, it was a Southern Blush. That tree was over 6 feet and I paid $25.00! I also got my giant gardenia tree there. That was also over 6 feet and about 5 feet wide. Now, I can call them up and request any tree I want. I can't wait for January so I can get my red navel orange tree. Jim (the owner)had a tangerine...huge for $75.00. He offered it to me for $50.00 and it had about 7-8 almost mature fruit! I passed on it. I was very tempted but was'nt going to buy it just to buy it. I only have limited space for maybe 2 more trees. I strongly advise calling. If they sell any kind of tropical fruit, chances are you could get another tropical fruit. Good luck!! Andrew
