Comments (16)KA mixer in an upper cabinet? I don't know about you, but mine is much too heavy to be an upper cabinet! You really shouldn't put heavy items in an upper cabinet -- if they slip out of your hands, it can be dangerous if they fall on you. I would do one of the following: Leave it on the counter (maybe get a cover for it when it's not in use to "hide" it and keep dust out) Store it inside an appliance garage Store it on a pantry shelf about waist-high. You could also have one 18" base cabinet with a mixer lift in it. It'll take up most of the cabinet, but if you don't like it on the counter and don't want it in a pantry or similar, then that may be your best bet. . The sink-DW-trash location has nothing to do with whether you rinse your dishes, it has to do with being in the way of someone trying to prep. If you're prepping on top of a DW, no one else can get to the DW to load/unload or add something/take something out. It's also not pleasant prepping over a running DW (heat and steam). Unless....are you referring to scraping and then loading the DW? If so, then I understand what you're saying with regards to DW & sink (no need for the sink). The trash, though, is best located in the Prep Zone since most trash/recyclables are generated during prepping and cooking. Ideally, it should be in the Prep Zone but near the Cooking & Cleanup Zones. If you put the DW on the non-range side and the trash pullout next to the sink b/w the range and sink, then you've accomplished the ideal!...See MoreNew home design - FEEDBACK Needed
Comments (46)artemis_ma, I'd rather not walk from bathroom to closet through the bedroom (I get dressed after I shower). I definitely don't want to rely on my DH to remember to close the bedroom door behind him (because invariably he'll forget) so that I can go from bathroom to closet without putting on a show. I'd be in the same bind if the bedroom shades/drapes were opened while I was in the shower. (Why, hello, neighbor! lol) To each their own. =) Andrew Page, finally you tell us that yes, you need the 4th bedroom! This is information that should have been included in your original post. Off to delete the idea I was drawing up.... I'm assuming that, in addition to the stairway location, the center wall, front to back, that is one side of each module needs to stay as drawn on your plan. Is that true? If it isn't, then there is more flexibility for room lay-out, as damiarain's plan shows. That said, with all the changes that need to be made to make your plan more functional, why not consider other plans or other modular home manufacturers as katinparadise suggested to find one that meets your needs with little or no modifications. I would think that all the change orders required to modify your plan will increase the final cost. A frosted glass door for the upstairs laundry room would help (good idea) as One Devoted Dame suggested, but even so, I'd encourage you to find a way to add an additional natural light source for the upstairs hall. Our upstairs landing is open to the 2 story entry and the 6 x 6 window over the door but because the entry faces northwest, the upstairs landing and hallway aren't as brightly lit as I'd expected when we built, especially on gray days....See MoreNew Construction Kitchen Design Feedback
Comments (18)Your kitchen arrangement is very similar to mine. The width between my cook top and my sink is 38 inches. I love it. One step to cook a meal. One of the things to think about, if this is a retirement home, could you have mobility issues at some point in the future. You want to be able to cook while taking the fewest steps possible. My kitchen was designed this way because I have had a spinal cord injury. The comments about landing space are correct especially next to the stove. I opted for a refrigerator and then freezer drawers over by the stove. The other thing I have which I LOVE is column pull outs next to the stove and oven. I can then store oil, seasoning and things i use at the stove and oven. One thing I did not understand was the coffee maker. If it were me, I would put the coffee maker and a prep sink in the Bakers pantry or perhaps adding a bar area/butler’s for the living area where you can have another prep sink. I have both a bakers pantry and a butler’s pantry and it really helps if you entertain. While my house is not modern, hopefully the photos and my comments will help you with your project. The pro’s on here always have good ideas - but my one disagreement is the sink opposite the cooktop because it’s not an issue if you have another prep sink....See Morerhome410
