Country Music Awards Tonight

Thought it was a good show. Reba McEntire does a good job of hosting, I think. We decided that the stage that they were on was not the best accoustically that we had ever heard. Several of the songs sounded really "off". Nice to see Garth and Trisha on there.

I agree a lot of the songs sounded off, Kelli Pickler and Taylor Swift come to mind. DH thought the sound engineer (is that what they are called?) messed up something because it sounded like their mikes were barely on (we missed the 1st half of the show, so maybe there were more issues?). I'm still amazed Taylor Swift is the "star" she is...I had friends in high school choir with better voices (but they didn't look like her). She's cute and all, but there are so many girls with better voices.

I loved the shorter haircut on the woman from Sugarland (Jennifer Nettles). I wish I was blond...those tossled styles just don't look the same on non-highlighted dark hair.

DH and I commented about the sound of some of the songs being off--especially Rodney Atkins.

I was disappointed that George Strait didn't win anything--I think he's the king of country music now.

I agree with Sue that Taylor Swift isn't a great singer. Of the younger ladies, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Nettles are the best.

Thank you Gazania....this is the old curmudgeon speaking...what they call Country today, is just Pop, with anew title. I listen to classic country all the time and I can recognize those singers because they didn't all sound alike, not to mention look alike. Today's so-called female country singers all look the same....skinny, long blond hair, dressed like a hooker. The guys look alike as well, shaggy hair, unshaven, and sloppily dressed. I tried to watch a little of the award show, the only thing that impressed me was when the Service man came on, in the wheel chair, and the standing ovation he received, and the heartfelt song, by Trace Atkins. Dani, I agree with you and the others about Nicole Kidman. I remember her when she first turned up with Tom Cruise. That curly red hair! And I could swear the first photo I saw of her showed her pregnant. Some months later the two of them were on Mike Douglas's show (I think . . . or maybe Merv Griffin), and when he asked if they planned to have a baby, Tom and Nicole exchanged a certain look. She was so much more animated then, so much more natural. These days she looks uncomfortable no matter what she's doing. She said in an interview that she doesn't have much sexual confidence. That seemed ludicrious at the time (she had just made that weird movie with her husband--I forget the name, but it was a biggie), but since then from what I've seen of her I can believe it.

Those music award shows are certainly not my cup of tea! Not my style of music at all. I watched The Dust Bowl also and had seen another similar show on either History or Discover a few years ago. Also, for those who enjoyed it, may I recommend a book called The Worst Time, by Tim Egan. He was the young man that was also interviewed in last night's program. It's an excellent book, with passages about some of the same people interviewed on the Burns program, with memories from when they were children going through this. I too had thought this was a natural disaster until I had read more.

I watched the Red Carpet with the sound turned off. Then I watched reruns of Victoria on PBS and the latest episode of The Walking Dead (which is getting too gruesome). I flipped back to the Oscars on commercials and saw the pretty young singer get clipped in the head by a blue banner. I decided I had really had enough when they brought in the "faux tourists". You think they could have hired better actors for that. It was ridiculous. I saw the Best Movie mix up on the web this morning. I am very sorry that it was first blamed on incompetent older actors/presenters. Someone's head should roll at Price Waterhouse. It was a shame the thunder was stolen from Moonlight's success. I did love La La Land, though. Sorry I have not seen Moonlight but plan to go. I like going to the movies.

I watched the show and parts I liked and most I did not like. These country music shows are getting more like rock and roll shows every year. I wish people would sit down and shut up and let the singers sing. I muted a lot of the show. They kept telling us to vote but on the lower part of the screen it said the show was taped eariler and voting was closed so I guess no one on the west coast got to vote. I wondered if Garth would bring out Trisha and was happy to see that he did. Reba always does a good job. I really miss her show but do watch a lot of the reruns.

I'm another one that totally does not get Taylor Swift. The girl cannot sing!!! Yeah, she's cute and all, but I really think her strength is in her song writing. I wonder if the Academy isn't pushing her through because she is so young and will bring in a lot of the younger generation.

I tuned in and out. What I did catch, was just so so. I have always been a Garth fan but thought he looked and sounded winded. I was glad when he brought Trisha out. Patruth is right, these shows are more like rock shows. Oh well, to each his own. Dottie

I thought it was a good show, particularly the Eddy Arnold song Carrie Underwood & Brad Paisley sang. I was also happy to see Leann Rimes because she's one of my favorites.
