CMA Awards (and a little fashion critique)

I caught only a portion of the CMA awards last night. Although I rarely listen to country music anymore, for some reason I like the awards ceremony. I didn't get to hear Lady Antebellum, but I'll check them out on Amazon. I thought Sugarland sounded wonderful. Ditto the other performers I heard.

I like Kellie Pickler a lot, and like so many others was very moved by her tearful performance last year. This year was certainly different! I'm glad she wasn't crying, of course, but I can't say I was crazy about her outfit. I don't necessarily want female country stars to revert to the big hair and frilly dresses of the 1980s, but I Kellie's outfit looked more like it belonged on Madonna (on a conservative day) than a country singer.

Is this the trend these days?

Yes, that's the other thing. She has a lovely figure, but that outfit didn't flatter it one bit.

I AM SPEECHLESS!!!!! Ditto everything everything everyone else said! I am in awe. I am a left brained design clod, but I do recognize genius. I am stuggling to dwsign 5 bathrooms and a kitchen with only two weeks to prepare for our newly constructed home in Irvine. Our two bedroom filled with mold was torn down to the concrete slab and has gone up faster than I expected. Any tips, help, suggestions, this peon will fall to her knees. I really know nothing about gardenweb protocol as I just joined and you are my first message. I am overwhelmed and don't want to go to a tile design showroom where I get the most recent 'in' Tuscan look ir white carrera marble design. How do you come you with such great ideas. I have sat in Barnes and NOble and looked through magazines...lthe saddest part is I'm married to a contractor and his design sense is more outdated than mine! We both just stared at yours and said...ooohhh.......aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

I think you need professional photos. The current interior photos seem distorted in size. Things seem short and wide. Looks like doll house furniture and the photos make the ceiling seem very low when you can see the ceiling in the photo. the photos are out of whack as to what the real interior looks like, so it seems. The exterior photo of the front of home. Probably will come out much nicer if you took on a bright cloudy day. this way no sun shadows. or take just after sunset or after it rained. The rain makes the grass and shrubs greener and the wet driveway and wet roof make the colors vivid and the house really pops when taken after a rain but when still cloudy. when you see the mansions with the slick photo galleries done by pros...those homes most often are done at sunset or cloudy days and usually all the lights of the house are ON for the photo. Looks very nice. Also ..the front photo you cannot see the left side of the home because of the tree and this would make the home look larger if you could see that side of the home. Otherwise you see a lot of the garage side of the home which is not always the most pleasing. Want it to look big and grand. That home is very nice looking but better photos would make it stunning.

I advise you find someone else, regardless of the historical talent of this designer, this is not a good design, and even if this is what you asked for, it shouldn't have been done unless you beat him into submission. I think your best bet is finding an architect that you connect with and whose philosophy you agree with. There are many talented designers out there who are not architects, but honestly, I don't think many consumers can identify them. I do, however, think that the connection is a lot more important than the title, so it is about finding the right person to design your home. --------------- I don't know about awards in home design, however, I restore old houses and I constantly have photo shoots for features in newspapers and magazines. I submit the house with a small (mostly B.S. story) of why the house "needed" the remodel or "spoke to me." The reality is that I remodeled the house for a hobby and a tidy profit and the magazine/newspaper feature is simply a tool for me to increase resale. I suspect that all the "tours of homes," are much the same thing. ---------------- Meaning that you have an unfinancible house. Because no one will loan 1.2M for a one bedroom house. Just because below grade square footage appraises for less than above grade, doesn't mean that bedrooms in daylight basements can't be counted as bedrooms. A bedroom that meets all the legal requirements for a bedroom is a bedroom, and you are not going to find a bank that says it isn't, in fact, you are never going to find a bank who cares. Banks don't care if it is one bedroom or twenty-one bedrooms, appraisers will, for a bank if it appraises, it appraises. In the end, it will probably appraise for less (depending on your locale) but it also costs less to build. Figuring out the net effect of a finished basement on the cost - appraisal equation is something that is going to have to be done by an appraiser in your specific area.

I am on the third book of my exploration of Gothic literature. Unlike The Castle of Otranto, which is made up of one suspense scene after another, The Old English Baron is long-winded, wordy and full of exposition and the author manages to kill the thrill of the handful of suspense scenes almost before they begin, by explaining too much. I am now reading Vathek by William Beckford, and find it is the first of these books that I would call a full-blown Gothic novel. As well as being an influential on the Gothic genre, it also influenced the fantasy and horror genres, and both Keats and Byron, as well as Poe and Lovecraft, were influenced by it. It is highly entertaining and Beckford mixed together an Oriental setting with Gothic elements like supernatural happenings, villainy and dark deeds, and added both humour and horror to the mix.

I didnt care about Kellie's outfit one way or another, but I have to say that Carrie Underwood is so beautiful and can pull off any dress. She's gorgeous.

I think Carrie Underwood is so pretty too. She looked great. Poor Kelly Pickler always looks a wreck I think. Her hair also looked terrible last night. I like it when it's in a bob and sleek. Am I the only one that thinks Taylor Swift is awfully cute but can't sing? I'm not a Miranda Lambert fan but thought her song last night was really nice and her voice sounded beautiful. I thought Nicole Kidman looked extremely uncomfortable on stage and out of place. Just not her element I guess.

Angela, I agree with you on all counts. I do love Kelly Pickler. I think she is struggling to pin down a look. Sometimes she has that classic country singer look and sometimes she looks like a Dixie Chic. Taylor Swift is so pretty, but has a weak voice. I'd like to see her in a few years after her voice matures some.
I love Miranda Lambert's style, and sound. Pretty and natural.
Finally; I really miss the old Nicole Kidman. The curly haired, vivacious Nicole. She looks traumatized now. Big eyed, puffy lips, sleek hair. I don't like it at all. She can be so much prettier than that.

I watched some of it but missed Shania Twain, i saw a picture of her on perez though today and she looked fabulous! She must have had a ton of work done though...

I'm a Country Music fan but apparently not an avid one b/c I'd never heard of Miranda Lambert til last nite. I only watched about the 1st 45 min of the show and am sorry that I didn't watch the all of it after reading your comments. I've been wondering about Shania Twain as I had not heard anything from her for a while. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that Taylor Swift can't sing, I thought I was alone about that. She's been on all the talk shows lately but I guess that's to be expected since she's promoting a new album.

I think Miranda Lambert is so cute. When she sang "You're the reason God make Oklahoma" with Blake Shelton in that 100 greatest country duets show they were so cute together.
I just don't get the Taylor Swift thing. I had a hard time understanding the words she sang. Maybe in a few years her voice will mature and she won't squint up her eyes so much.
Nicole Kidman looked so uncomfortable. She actually looked scared.
And I could just sit and watch George Strait all night! LOL
It's always a good show tho and last night was no different.

I like one Taylor Swift song 'You should have said no'. They others I can't hear what she is saying.

Myley Cyrus will be Britney Spears in a few years.
Billy Ray was drunk as a skunk and made a fool of himself.
They should have stopped him at the curtain, poured him into a cab and sent him home.

Brad Paisley is a hoot.

George Strait will always be the best.

Dani, I agree with you and the others about Nicole Kidman. I remember her when she first turned up with Tom Cruise. That curly red hair! And I could swear the first photo I saw of her showed her pregnant. Some months later the two of them were on Mike Douglas's show (I think . . . or maybe Merv Griffin), and when he asked if they planned to have a baby, Tom and Nicole exchanged a certain look.

She was so much more animated then, so much more natural. These days she looks uncomfortable no matter what she's doing. She said in an interview that she doesn't have much sexual confidence. That seemed ludicrious at the time (she had just made that weird movie with her husband--I forget the name, but it was a biggie), but since then from what I've seen of her I can believe it.
