Which granite do I pick?

I have really enjoyed looking through the beautiful granites posted on this site, but have not seen a Sienna Bordeaux (aka Carbernet or Typhoon Bordeaux). Anyone have this? We are planning to sell in a year or two, so we need to choose for ourselves AND the buyer- hard enough just to find what I like :) Something with enough "wow", but not TOO much. I have medium to dark cherry cabinets and a soft white cabinet with coffee glaze. Also have a lot of natural light with travertine floors.

So, here are the choices:

I guess I'm wondering if the Sienna is too much... lots of rust and variety of other colors. So whatcha think?

For potential buyers, I'd go with your first choice. Very pretty, and I imagine gorgeous with the travertine! Lots of people don't like a ton of movement in granite. My DH thinks a lot of them look like someone threw up on the counter! (I sort of see what he means! :>)

Threw up on the counter--LOL! I will quite never look at granite the same way again.

I say go with the second one. It is spectatular with the cabs.

Hi, I wish I had come across this website, and your particular question, while in the midst of redoing our kitchen at this moment...I too am agonizing over what granite color! My cabinets are your exact color and similar layout with an "elegant" feel, and black island. Just this weekend, we decided to do "golden supreme" for perimeter cabinets, and a walnut wood top for island. I too wanted a light look, and fell in love with "la dolce vita" but out of our budget, and my husband wanted a more dramatic feel, but we didn't want solid black look. The "golden" has both gold and black swirls, with some quartz in it. You may consider that color. Good luck!

This is sort of like asking what everyone's favorite ice cream is...but I really like the first one best. I think it has a quiet elegance about it with your cabinets and you could have more fun with the backsplash and accessories. To my eye, the second one is too mustardy, but then I did everything I could to keep from getting a lot of yellow in my granite, while I am sure there are others here who strove for that as a goal. So I guess I'm not much help... P.S. I laughed when I read your comment about your husband getting tired of all the indecisiveness and losing the will to live. My husband and I were in Lowes and I was stressing over picking out door hardware...Paul kept telling me to "hurry up and pick something out and let's go!" Finally I snapped back at him and said something like "Just because YOU don't care if the kitchen looks like it was thrown together without any thought... well I do!" Then he said "It only took me fifteen seconds to pick out the garbage disposal!" At which point, I almost pushed him down in the hardware aisle and I spat "Dear God, no one SEES the #@*# garbage disposal!" Hi Drmkit, I love BFR they are based in NH but do work from Boston to Montreal. Amazing talent at this place. Ask for Jessie http://www.bfrandassociates.com/ I am really picky about my seams. I would not be looking at price but focus on the work. How do they do edges? Seams? What is their reputation? You want good quality for your money. How will the mount your sink or cut around your sink? Will they stand by their work? Will they help you choose a good quality slab, otherwise you might have the counter cracking later. You do not want a fabircator who is going to scrimp, save, or cheap out. You don't want someone installing the wrong slab or something of poor quality. These are your counters. You want good quality at a fair price and someone who stands by their work. For me that is BFR. Here is an image of one of my seams. paint cabinets / pick counters - which to do first?

I wouldn't wait, given that it sounds like YOU will be doing the painting? (Am I right or were you going to pay someone?) It takes time to paint cabinets, so I'd start on that now, and just expect to do a little touch up when you remove the countertops and if you get a ding or two when changing out appliances. If you follow the link for "my" clippings (click on my name) you'll see a formula that I use for painting cabinets. It's for a brown paint, but you can use the primer for any color. It walks through the important part of painting cabinets, including prep and tools. (I get tired of typing it over and over heh heh) Follow that and you'll have a very tough surface that will last, but the lovely thing about paint is that you can always touch up any dings really easily if you keep some paint on hand. When you do the rest, be sure to guard your cabinets. What I mean is, YOU take the counter tops off (it's easy...score the seal on the backsplash and between the cabinets and counters, and gently rock them off). If you have someone else do it, they might not be so gentle..and you'll have much more touch up to do. Congrats on the new house :) You'll really enjoy having a fresh new kitchen (and the paint will make it feel that way, even if you have old counters for a while). And the best fun is that it's YOUR kitchen!!!

Number one for me. It's soft, yet offers movement and a nice contrast to your cabs while still picking up the color. The second choice has too many thick rust blotches for my taste.

Personally, I love the thick rusty blotchy vomit of the second one. Seriously.

Hi,

Both pieces of granite are beautiful and look great with your cabinet door and floor. I think I like the first one better because its' movement is quiet and simple. I think it will look beautiful in your kitchen. I'm afraid of some of the colors in that 2nd piece of granite (especially the burgundy?) and I don't know if those were the colors you were planning to add.

Some of the things I've learned by not thinking of them at the time I picked out my granite are the colors/tiles for the backsplash, the color/style of window treatments, and the color/style of my knobs and pulls. It is really hard to pull all this together and make it work. Nevermind adding the color and finish of your appliances and lights!

Best of luck! And for what it's worth, I vote for slab #1.

Oh man, definitely the second one!! Just think how amazing that bronze patch will look as a focal point.

But 1 would be just fine as well....

You can't go wrong either way. If you want a signature look, go with 2. If you want more consistency, 1.

Second slab... More movement the better. It looks like a piece of art rather than a manmade fake...

What do you have in the rest of your house that makes your heart sing - a crazy print chair or a wild piece of art? OR do you love your antique line drawings or your leather club chair?

Which one would you like to look at every ... single ... day ... for the next XX years? (My vote is number one, but I'm not going to have to look at it every day.)

I love love love the second one with your cabs. It has a bit more going on with it, which I like, and looks like it has more color variation. Good luck.

First almost has a marble look which is rare to see in granite and so beautiful...I vote for the first...who wouldn't love it??

On the second... does it have greenish blue in it or is that just the light reflecting off the green fence and the blue sky?

If indeed #2 is like nancyjns and no blue/green with that brown - GET IT NOW - it would look amazing with those cabs!! Otherwise #1 is also a nice pick.

nancyjn- your counters are incredible and give me a better sense of what they might look like installed.

deee- the second one, hands down makes my heart sing. Just pops with the cabinets, but then again the first one is so peaceful and clean looking. You see my dilemma. Guess I shouldn't complain to have two great choices.

mysterymachine- the blue/green is a reflection...and you are right- it does look so good with the cabinet.

Hhhmmmm... now for a decision. I'll let you know what I come up with. Thanks again!

The first one is more timeless and would go with anything should you change colors down the road. #ONE!

to my surprise, I got excited when I saw selection #2.
I am not into granite- I have high def. laminate, so when I saw #2 - I definitely was wowed - I really love it. I like the movement- it plays nicely with the cabinet and isn't travertine a neutral color- not much movement? I think this granite (#2) will give the room "pop"- just don't paint the walls a wild color and keep the accessories to a minimum.

First, I say buy what YOU want. A potential buyer isn't going to walk away just because of the granite in the kitchen. My personal preferance is number two. Just beautiful!!
