ontario home addition sunroom

We are in the throes of renovating the kitchen and have decided to add on a four seasons sunroom with glass roof. Does anyone have any experience with how wise this is in SW Ontario snow belt? It would be elevated 10 feet off the ground, heated floor (with the geo-thermal system), undersprayed to insulate floor and open into the existing kitchen with french doors. We have talked to Four Seasons Sunroom London and committed to the project but are scared!

I demolished one (along with the house) that had been built a year or two before in TO. It was warm and tight in the winter. But, then, I'm in the "banana belt."

I think sun rooms are a wonderful idea, but I don't think I'd get one with a glass roof. I knew a family that had one like that (in Nova Scotia) and the only time is was comfortable was in the spring and fall. (Too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.)

Can you change to get one with just glass sides? That way you'd have the low winter sun coming in, but keep out the overbearing summer sun overhead. And put it on the south side, so that low winter sun will have direct access.

With a conventional roof you have much better insulation value to keep heat in in winter and out in summer.

That heated floor sounds like a nice touch. You'll probably be enjoying your new space until Christmas and starting again on groundhog day!

The vapor barrier is supposed to keep warm, moist air from hitting a cool surface and condensing. In cool climates, the warm air is usually on the inside and the cold is on the outside. Therefore, you would want the vapor barrier on the inside. Conversely, in hot climates, the warm air is typically on the outside and the cooler air conditioned air is on the inside. I go with the sunroom, too, and here's why. You can build a shed for cheap at some point, and until then you'll probably keep one car inthe driveway, and all the bikes and basketballs in the garage along with the yard and snow tools. The sunroom will make a great playroom while the little ones are little. I've seen that sunroom with nothing in it but a low-pile play rug and Lego. Or balls. Or plastic hockey sticks. Or those big Little Tykes (slide, trikes, trains) Or Hot Wheels. Or dollhouses. Or art projects (easy-to-clean tile floor). Usually just one or two of those. But a great playspace, near you but not, outdoors but not. After they are done with those types of toys, it can be dining space and added living space. You don't need the shed until Boy #1 gets a car. Oops, didn't mean to scare ya lol! Upstairs, I wonder if you can steal some space from the game room to make a reach-in closet for Bedroom 2, and use its walk-in closet to expand the bathroom. 5 boys will need more counterspace, more drawer storage, and (I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm usually a 1-sink gal) 2 sinks. Downstairs, consider eliminating the study closet and adding a shower to the powder room.

Thanks for your guidance, P, APO & Latifolia.. Apple Pie...Think I'll enclose part of my back deck instead! Photo of current tiny bathroom, entrance on left side of hallway is what I'm dealing with. Blocking off that hallway to extend for full bath would ruin the openness of my home and the only place to expand is beyond where the toilet is right now. Anyway...I will Never buy another home. This is my forever home as a single, just-retired woman My life-blood centers around home improvement, no better neighborhood in my tough city.. ...and I have a seasoned pro who wants to do my projects at no-cost labor. Architects...Here I Come! Materials costs...we'll see. Thanks again!!!

Sun room (sort of) addition cost

Lay it on me--what is the minimum cost estimate (or cost range) for the following project: Our house is a ranch. We have a mudroom (used to be a breezeway, so it is a concrete foundation) that is 10' x 6'. It is NOT located at the gable end of the house (thinking about roof cost). I would like to come out, increasing the size of the room to 10' x 12'. The area where I want to expand is an old concrete patio. I don't think I want that sunroom window add-on thing, since, even though I love the sunlight in the winter, it would be pretty hot in summer. I'm thinking that also, for the sake of energy efficiency, I should skip skylights, much as I'd like them. I was just thinking of a wall of windows and a window on one side and a door on the other. I hope I gave enough info to give a rough estimate. I just want to be realistic about affordability before I decide yes or no to this project. Thanks. PS - We live in NJ, so I know that probably bumps up the average price.

just got my computer fixed after virus problem.
We've gone ahead and signed with four seasons sunrooms for the whole glass house and are hoping all will be well. We need a breakfast room and are going to take out the old triple window for the doorway into the new space. Does anyone have experience with heated floor as the only heat source for a glass room?
