Granite overhang? Show me?

I would like to know if there is a maximum amount of overhang for granite? We want to have seating at an island with an overhang for stools.

At what point do we need support? What are our options? Show me what you have done to support large overhang on an island or such.

8 to 12 inches without support if your granite is 3 cm, always need support if your granite is 2 cm, according to Tom Cordova's rock blog. HTH.

So over 12 inches you need support? Would I use corbels? Or a pole or two?

As promised here are pictures of the supports installed. We couldn't do the steel sheet because on the backside of the 12" cabinets, which face the overhang, is the sink. Stacy at Amastin knew what type of granite we had and the cabinet layout and recommended installing two supports at approximately 31" apart where cabinet boxes joined together and we had extra support below. The supports are 24" long - 12" on cabinets, 12" overhang. We realize that the supports are farther apart than the typically recommend 16-20", max of 24", but it was by far better than not having any supports at all and we are happy with the solution. We also were very impressed with Amastin's customer service and would gladly use him again in the future. Here are the pictures before and after install. Show me your support brackets for 15' or more overhang

Are you asking for brackets or corbels? We have brackets that are attached to the studs -- you can find these are shortrunpro.com; and we also have counterbalance brackets for our peninsula. You don't see the supports at all. I currently don't have any pictures -- but if you call the shortrun pro folks and tell you the specs of your countertop they will tell you what you need. They are not cheap. I ended up finding out what I needed from them, and then realized that the local community college had a welding and metal working program -- they got me in touch with someone locally who fabricated them for me for a much more reasonable price. Cindy - Sorry - I don't have any pics to share for your question - however - IF you are going to put a trim panel on the wall to take some of the "beating" that kids (and "kidadults" like me - a KID trapped in an ADULT's BODY...) will be dishing out - I'd offer you this suggestion: For the trim/fascia panel - take a look at using "FRP" (Fibre Re-Inforced Plastic) sheething - it is used in high traffic areas in place of ceramic tile. It is waterproof, comes in sheets that are 48" x 96" x 1/16" to 1/8" thick -in white & almond - and has a crackled or crystal looking texture - some are called "Pebble Embossed" too - it's way easy to keep clean, and you can glue it to the drywall. You can purchase this FRP at most large home improvement centers or lumber yards. I googled "FRP" and came up with a whole slew of products and sources - I have attached one link for you to look at to see what I am describing. After three trips back, I realize (and told my contractor this) that this company perhaps just isn't capable. Whether they can't or they won't, I'm tired of having these debates in my house. Please tell me what I and DH, as very capable DIYers, can do to polish the edges ourselves. DH would be thrilled to know we may need to go out and purchase a special power tool. ;) Earlier this week, one of the workers spent about two minutes on a bullnose spot, using a Makita something-or-other with a circular pad attachment. Specifics would be appreciated as I'll be headed to the big box this weekend. Thanks again. I realize it's not right for a million different reasons that we'll be paying these guys and end up doing some of the work ourselves, but it is what it is. I want to live to fight another day -- this has just been emotionally (and, therefore, mentally and physically) draining.

We have a 15" overhang and we have corbels that will support the overhang (3cm granite). I think the rule-of-thumb is overhangs 10" and up require support for 3cm granite.

Countertop Support:
- If your granite is 2 cm thick, then there can be no more then 6" of of unsupported span with a 5/8" subtop
- If your granite is 3 cm thick, then there can be no more then 10" of unsupported span - no subtop required
- If you need support, to determine your corbel dimensions:
  
  Thickness of Stone - Dimension of Unsupported Span = Corbel Dimension
  
  i.e., an 18" total overhang in 2 cm would require a 12" corbe; the same overhang in 3 cm would require an 8" corbel

10" and up is what they told us on our 3cm granite. We have steel supports underneath as I don't care for the functionality of corbels when the overhang is used in conjunction with barstools. Too many bruised knees and makes spacing the barstools somewhat awkward. IMO.

There is a ton of info on this board about corbels & granite overhangs, etc. I was asking a lot of same questions as you are now. We have a 12 inch overhang and put in corbels...plain, simple ones. I was worried about banging our knees but they don't even come close. Plenty of room under there. Good luck!

We have 2 cm granite with an overhang that is rounded so that it is 18" deep in the center, and 12" deep on the ends. We chose inexpensive "dining bracket supports" from our cabinet company to support it. They were much less expensive and have a smaller profile (less knee knocking) than corbels.

10" max on 3cm , 6 to 8 inches on 2cm.

steel plate works very well, corbels and brackets next.
