small doormat color ok?

I had a coir doormat here which blended in with the floor nicely, but boy does it shed!!! Drove me crazy. Its gone!

My goal was to get something that blended in with the floor and mostly disappeared to not detract from the decorative rug, but that may be hard to accomplish.

So I bought this waterhog one online and the online pic looked more like the floor color, but IRL it is definitely brown.

Would you keep this one or keep looking? (I can still return it with no shipping charges). Probably I am overthinking this. Usually do :-)

Functionally, I really need something there. This is the primary dog-in and dog-out doorway 3x a day 365.

(OT: Yes, I know the round rug is too small and too floating, but can't do anything about it. Usually the desk chair is half over it. :-( And window treatments are still on hold. keep going back and forth between woven woods ($) vs. fabric ($$$) roman shades. I want cordless top-down-bottom-up which is only available in fabric, but that is 3-4x more expensive than woven woods and not in the budget now. There are 3 more windows nearby that I would treat the same as these 3. and I don't want panels.)

I think it looks fine and doesn't detract from the round rug at all. If you think it does, you could get a narrow umbrella stand to set next to, or on the rug to make a little niche there.

Hi Carmen and welcome! The same seemed to have happened to my itea (it did okay last winter but obviously this winter, the warm early part and freezes in March/April seems to have done it in). Similar happened with my clethra (it was also a "Hummingbird", athough it was a small cutting size and I didn't want to keep it inside but probably should have). So those 2 are iffy and outside of requiring alot of water as their preference, they seem to be a bit tricky in pots without some protection for them in winter in the colder zones. A good rule of thumb is to look for plants 1 - 2 zones hardier than where you are if you want to keep them outside in pots with little or no protection. So in that case, the aronia (as a zone 3) and the hemlock (as a zone 4) should be okay. This is also assuming that you can get them through that first winter and once they are established, the zone 2, 3, & 4s are pretty carefree. Provided that you right-size the pot for them and give them fertilizer and water (and keep them away from windy spots), they should do fine.

Hopeful, I guess I would need more information to really answer this question completely. 1. Are these palms being grown inside or outside? Year-round, part of the year? 2. If you are growing outside, what are temperatures and precipitation like? (summer?/year-round?) 3. What is your cold hardiness zone? 4. What is your heat zone? 5. What is the soil like? And what kind of containers are they (plastic I assume, even the color of the containers matter here) To me, your containers sound really large. But could you get away with it given appropriate soil, and growing these guys down in the Keys (I live in NJ)--I guess (strong sun, high temps, rapid growth etc). Because I haul my palms out for the growing season, I need to be concerned with the possibility of excessive rainfall (large containers hold in a lot more water than smaller ones). The growth rate of the palm species also matters by the way. Christmas palms are only moderately fast anywhere other than the most tropical of locations. Roystonia (Royals) can be slow as juveniles (spending up latter in more tropical zones)--putting them in large containers wouldn't speed them up. I'm sure people will offer you very different opinions here (anything from "go for it" to "you're gonna kill your plants". My personal philosophy with containers and growing palms is to aim for a slightly snug fit while providing some room for root growth. Remember too, that palms prefer deep containers (as opposed to wide and shallow). Another concern of mine is separating seedlings while they are small rather than waiting until they get big--palm roots are relatively fragile. You can still separate larger specimens (I did this recently with Foxtails)--but I try NOT to. Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

I have two microsuede host chairs in my breakfast room. The fabric is pale blue and came from Calico Corners for about $12/yd. I think all microsuedes are not created equal....different prices, hand, quality, etc. Anyway, shortly after the chairs were reupholstered in the ms, my DD tossed a bowl of tomato soup all over one of them. I can tell you, she couldn't have covered more square footage if she'd tried! I went after it with water and a clean sponge and it cleaned up perfectly. I agree with others that the sliding-in-sliding-out process may be hampered by ms. But, for my chairs, which we just plop into, and the ms (gasp) recliner I bought for DH, it is just fine. In addition to all the very cute Indoor/Outdoor fabrics available these days, I will also suggest that you can have any fabric laminated. There is a minimum charge, but depending on your budget and whatever else you do or don't find out there, it is an option.

It's your house. Why not paint for you? Have fun with it. Don't be afraid to do something that brings you happiness. Enjoy! Afterwards, if you think the transition from your open spaces to the powder room is awkward, you can always keep the powder room door closed. You can always repaint for beige brown taupe safety boredom when and if you ever put the house on the market.

I'm not necessarily an all-function or all-form person but I think you' be done well. It doesn't detract from the floor or rug at all. In fact, it's hardly noticeable.

It looks like what it is, a waterhog mat. Fact is, it'll take more than that to absorb what is ever on a dog's paws; two steps, and he/she is off the mat, right?

If you want something mover esthetically pleasing, I'd go for a seagrass mat, or something like that, and keep some towels nearby to wipe the dog's paws with on rainy/muddy days. Otherwise, what you have does the job and is in a place in which it is meant to be.

Depending on how trainable the dog is, you can always get a long mat to run along the entire stretch of the slider doors, and train the dog to walk down that mat when coming into the house and NOT on the round rug. It is doable! And that would allow more moisture and dirt to be absorbed by the mat from his paws.

Ah yes, a natural rug would be the color I am looking for and won't shed like the coir does. Perfect!

Yes, I do keep a towel nearby for wet days. when I bring the dog in -- on a leash too -- she doesn't even stop on the door mat. It's too close to the door for both of us to stand on. She walks to the middle of the green rug to be wiped down!!!

My house is a dog house. I don't even worry about the mats that she rolls up sliding inside after playing frisbee in the garden hose. She and her daddy, I thought would be the death of me, but it appears I had a change of heart since my niece's American Border collie (sister to mine) was killed yesterday. I will put up with it, I will put up with it, I will put up with it. I do not like a dirty house and I love the dog and my husband. I love my dog and husband. I love my dog and husband. I love my dog and husband but I need some nerve pills and a full-time housekeeper.
