Is microsuede ok for a banquette cushion - small kids? Thanks

Just wondering if it might be too hard to maintain and if there is a better choice? Thanks!

microsuede is terrible material, had two recliners in it, absolutely hated it, sucks up dirt, stains, body oil like you can not imagine, and not easy to clean, maybe if you treat it with scotch guard heavy, but we went with leather for our new ones in off white and love them...love the leather..

Do people have to slide into it? If so,I would recommend doing the seat in something slippery. The back can be fabric. Restaurants usually upholster banquettes this way for people to get in and out.

our banquette in the kitchen is made of microfiber (velvet). We had microsuede upholstered furniture in the pasts and they are easy to clean.

However, I would look into sunbrella indoor fabric. I heard that they are easy to clean, and they also come in brighter colors & fun designs. I'm considering recovering my banquette in this fabric because ultrasuede can look a bit boring.

detroit, thanks for the zara suggestion. i do like it a lot. i'll have to see if any fabric stores here have some samples of it. i found a few banquette pics on houzz that i liked. do you guys think any of these would look ok in my space? this one is sort of a navy blue? i like the pattern but maybe it is too dark, maybe too traditional for my space, which is sort of dark already... I've never built a banquette, but my kitchen and dining room is exactly like yours, layout and dimensions. We don't have a wall between the DR and LR however, so we've put a buffet server on the long wall between DR and LR. Clearly, you've outgrown your house. My dining room looks so much bigger than yours because I'm not trying to make it do double duty by storing stuff that should be in the kitchen. The open storage is not doing you any favors of making your space look comfortable and peaceful at dinnertime. Rather than built-ins, consider a hutch or buffet server with some closed storage that you can take with you when you move. Simplify your stuff, and I guarantee you'll add to the function, and you'll feel much more relaxed. There's a principle of elementary education that says if the classroom is disorganized and chaotic, the students will be too. Besides whether a banquette is doable, does it make sense for future buyers? I would ask a realtor before I went any further. I don't like the idea of the banquette against a peninsula with a sink. My counter extends 19" beyond my sink, and I get splash almost to the edge. Seating--we have a 36" x 54" table--a little narrower than most rectangular tables. We put 4 chairs on the long sides. I find that arrangement more roomy than a chair at each end. Extensions pull out from under the table on the short ends for guests. Mine is positioned with the long side along the peninsula, but you could turn yours the other way.

And another, I have Sunbrella Dupioni on a cushion that is on a bench in my mudroom. The bench faces a north facing French door and is used for sitting on when removing boots after ranch work, and, although it wasn't planned that way, for temporary dumping of mail, dog harnesses, coats, groceries, you name it. So, dirty stuff is regularly placed on it. Most either do not affect it or brush right off. Occasionally, I have to spot clean it with a dab of dilute detergent and water, then blot. Once in awhile, I take the cover off (it unzips) and wash it in the washing machine, then let it air dry before replacing. It looks brand new after five years. The door from the outside opens in and towards the fridge. We are having the door replaced, though, and will talk about alternatives. My daughter and son in law bought an a new sofa in the micro suede a couple of years ago and it was quite expensive. The store told her all the wonderful things you want to hear about the fabric, including that it's easy to clean. Having three cats, they eagerly bought into it. Fast forward, it's been 3 years and We ALL HATE this couch. No matter what you're wearing the fabric sticks to it, making it hard to get comfortable once you sit down. And the cat hair doesn't come off either! They opted for a lighter shade because again they were promised it was easy to clean, NOT! It's a nightmare, don't waste the money. Make a cushion with a cotton cover that has a zipper in the back so you can occassionally wash it. More choices in colors and patterns, more durability.

I have two microsuede host chairs in my breakfast room. The fabric is pale blue and came from Calico Corners for about $12/yd. I think all microsuedes are not created equal....different prices, hand, quality, etc.

Anyway, shortly after the chairs were reupholstered in the ms, my DD tossed a bowl of tomato soup all over one of them. I can tell you, she couldn't have covered more square footage if she'd tried! I went after it with water and a clean sponge and it cleaned up perfectly.

I agree with others that the sliding-in-sliding-out process may be hampered by ms. But, for my chairs, which we just plop into, and the ms (gasp) recliner I bought for DH, it is just fine.

In addition to all the very cute Indoor/Outdoor fabrics available these days, I will also suggest that you can have any fabric laminated. There is a minimum charge, but depending on your budget and whatever else you do or don't find out there, it is an option.

While not quite as durable as outdoor fabric, I recently used "Crypton" coated fabric (many brands have this available, from Duralee to Robert Allen & others). You can read about it on their website, but thus far it has been very easy to clean .... and I have messy young children, so it gets a lot of scrubbing.
