It's unbelievable that you found what looks to be a lawyer's cabinet for $25.

Wow! I have a barrister's bookcase like that, it had been painted green and was missing base and top, I had someone make me a top and base and those 2 pieces cost more than $25 25 yrs ago! I forget what I paid for the bookcase. Don't stain it if it has the original finish! I'd also try to match the old glass if you could (unless you have kids and want the bottom door to have tempered glass for safety - won't help much though if they put an elbow through one of the original upper glass doors). Great finds! That bookcase would be at least $300 more on our CL.

Ajsmama...I bought a mahagony barrister's bookcase this past spring on an antique shopping trip with my girlfriends. I paid $300 for it! It is 'fancier' than this new one. I haven't even seen the new one in person yet. My Dad, who builds custom cabinets for a living, went to look at it for me. (He and the bookcase live one town away from me.) Dad said that it was sturdy enough. I really dislike oak finishes, which is what it looks like in the picture. It may not be oak, though, which will be a pleasant suprise! I will be putting this one in my 16 yo daughter's room, so I won't worry about replacing the glass until she is finished with it.

Thanks, Newdawn! I do too! After my daughter moves out (or gets tired of the furniture) I will use it in my bedroom as a desk for my laptop.

I totally gave with strings attached and I never wanted to be that kind of Mom! I just couldn't help it. =) I told her that I would buy it, she could use it while she lived at home, but no way is she taking it when she leaves!

Regarding the pulls you want to replace on the dresser. I had a old desk I refinished and had all the drawer pulls but the were brass plated and were in bad shape. I looked everywhere to find replacements but all of them I would have had to drill new holes. I found a place that re-plated the brass on the old ones. I was also able to choose if I wanted it shiny, brushed, antiqued. They also put on a clear finish to prevent tarnish. They had other type of re-plating they did. It cost a bit less than buying new higher quality pulls. I am still happy 25 years later with them.

If you end up having to buy new pulls, look at Lee Valley.com. ItÂs a woodworkerÂs catalog and they have many vintage looking pulls for restoration. Reasonably priced, too. I was able to get some that were so close to the original it was uncanny.

Oh my gosh what great deals! I'm drooling over the desk and dresser. I had to laugh at myself. I've been reading too many novels about WWII since the first thing I thought of when I saw RAF was the Royal Air Force! LOL.

oh those are great buys! i have an old barrister's bookcase i bought yrs ago - for more than 25.00! back in the 70's i think. mine is dark wood tho and has a drawer at the bottom.

that desk looks a lot like mine also - mine has a leather top.

Also look at Horton Brasses for dresser pulls. One great thing about that site is that you can search by what's called "boring size", that's the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the other for a two-screw or two-post pull. Their prices are very reasonable for the incredible quality. Your pulls look like classic rosette bail pulls and should not be too horribly difficult to either match or replace if you go to the right places. It looks like the pulls are the same on the desk - if you're really stuck you might remove all the bail pulls from the desk, use those to replace the missing pulls on the dresser, and replace the pulls on the desk with the closest ones you can find so that each piece is consistent (especially in finish/patina). Or vice versa. :-)

Ball & Ball may also have what you need.

I'm very jealous of the barrister bookcase. I do think you should replace the missing glass though, even if it doesn't match the old glass - the gaping hole would look pretty tacky.

Your matching "chest of drawers" and what I believe is a ladies "dressing table", (not a desk) are gorgeous. The price you paid is mind boggling. What a deal! You cannot imagine all the time I have spent looking for a chest of drawers like that for my daughter. Lucky you!

I have a chest of drawers that is very similar, and my mother still has the matching dressing table at her house.

Another thought. The chest of drawers is kind of masculine with the edging, so the other piece could have been a desk for a gentleman's bedroom.

Really beautiful--congratulations!...with my mind on bath design right now, when I saw the last piece I immediately thought "oy, what a gorgeous vanity that would be, with a hole cut for a nice semi-recessed sink..." Is that sacrilegious?
