advice on interior column shape/style

Zinia

We are remodeling our attic into a 2nd story. The stairway will be located near our front door and living room/den area. The fireplace is surrounded by an oak, antique mantel with rounded columns.

We need a support column as part of our stairs. Will it look better to stay with a round shape?

Also, since our house is not very large(about 1800 sq ft downstairs), and the stairs will "stand out", I'm thinking they should be painted the color of the wall(light taupe), instead of white like the trim of our crown moulding.

The room upstairs will probably be painted yellow/orange, but light shade.

Thanks for any advice,

Zinia
