Tadpoles!

In my youth, we used to go to mud puddles, down by the creek and scoop them up in a mason jar.

Would tend to them, in a larger container, with rocks, for them to climb up on when their tails began to disappear and feet developed, then set them free.

That was soooooooooo long ago, and I still remember those days.

I have a lot of pleasant memories of my childhood, as a matter of fact I only have one bad memory. My parents had a serious disagreement and I consider us lucky that I only have the one memory of that kind of thing.

One special memory was one about sitting out side on a blanket and when it came time to go in, I pretended to be asleep so daddy would carry me in to bed.

Glenda, I did the very same thing! I had a big gallon jar, or an old goldfish bowl filled with frog spawn every spring.

I actually bought some tadpole food at the pet shop the other day. I plan on hatching some tadpoles this spring.

You undoubtedly got your information from the following website: www.californiaherps.com This is an excellent resource, and I know some of the people who have put that whole thing together. You obviously didn't look at the species list closely enough, as you will see that the southern leopard frog (Rana utricularia) is an INTRODUCED species - that means it is not native and doesn't belong there! While northern leopard frogs once had a few spots in northerneastern California where they were present, it is likely that they are EXTIRPATED (that means they are gone) from the state now, as it also says on that site and if you actually took the time to read scientific journals (as I do) you'll see that repeated efforts to find relict populations have failed. Also, you'll notice that northern leopard frogs never ranged into Central california, where you say you live...so again, that goes back to my saying you shouldn't be bringing in nonnative or nonlocal species. Obviously you didn't read my original post - do you really think that a northern leopard frog (or leopard toad, as you put it, haha) with its origins in North Carolina would survive in your region? I doubt it...not to mention the fact that it is ILLEGAL. You tried using the word "indigenous" as well - you have to use that word with some measure of scale - there are lots of anurans indigenous to California - but how about YOUR LOCAL area? I guess by your rules, you could take a Couch's spadefoot toad from extreme southeastern CA and put it in your pond...because its indigenous to California, right? Or maybe a Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea), because they are indigenous to the United State, and they sure are pretty! Again, do your research, and if you're too lazy to go find some construction sites or golf courses nearby you, then tough luck. Don't get pissy at me for advising and educating you about the problems that could be caused by your actions. ~Mike An old post but worth repeating!

Don't have any pictures but they will be in the water not hanging on to any plant life. The eggs are almost transparent jelly like almost round in shape with a dark spot in the middle. When they get a little larger you will see a tail form on one end and a little later legs. To me it kind of reminds me of a very large bowl of the insides of a concord grape without the purple color all close together.

I'm sad to say there will be no frogs in my freezer. I don't like killing any critters for the heck of it, I live in the country and there are more critters than I care to see,snakes rats,squirrels,gaters and millions of frogs. Yes I could move but this is not an option at this time. I use moth balls for snakes all around outside and I use pinesol for frogs. I spray pinesol around any area that I don't want frogs they don't like the scent and will stay away,pinesol does not kill the frogs but it will kill the tadpoles. I mix 1 part PS to 2 part water in a spray bottles and spray the nooks and crannies where I don't like them to hang out. It is not fun to open the front door and a couple of frogs fall on your head and even a snakes once.

Are there any pond supply stores in your area? Craigslist sometimes has koi or pond supplies listed by a retailer and you might find an avenue that way. Also, Ive seen tadpoles listed on ebay. You would have to make sure the types of tadpoles/frogs you are getting are legal to be shipped into your state.

One time I went in a pet shop and they had a bunch of bullfrog tadpoles that had developed their legs and they had to cover the aquarium to keep them in. I had a bunch of ponds at home, but I had been unsuccessful getting bullfrogs to stay around...had released two or three of them, but they left.

So I bought all the little frogs for a quarter apiece...there were over 40 of them. I took them home and released them, and from then on, I always had bullfrogs. All the places around ours had farm ponds and at night, you could hear bullfrogs all around. Each year there were thousands of bullfrog tadpoles in the ponds. The adults were cannibalistic tho, and would eat the younger ones, but still we always had a lot of bullfrogs there from then on.

Eeeek! I didn't know they are cannibalistic. There is a Cow Tank near my property and they sing very loudly. Must be hundreds of them.

I used to go down to the creek at my Granny's house and catch tadpoles. I would bring them back to the house and watch them change. I wish DD had been able to do that. She is terrified of frogs (lizards and snakes too). She comes by it honest. Her paternal grandmother was also terrified of frogs. Must be genic. Fortunately her kids seem to think they are great.

Now you have made me want to go look for tadpoles (and lightening bugs).

My boys discovered them last summer in a man made retention pond near by..they brought a few home..and I let them keep them a few hours and then they had to be returned..

One of my favorite things about the garden ponds are the frogs. They sing to us from spring thru fall. What a wonderful sound! And of course...we have hundreds of thousands of tadpoles!!!!

I grew up in the middle of Los Angeles, in the Valley. My Dad took me to visit some friends of his who lived close to a pond, lake, something like that. We scooped tadpoles and brought them home! They grew up and lived by our fish pond in the back yard. I love frogs!
