WANTED: When is the best time for seed trading?
Comments (5)Dottie -- Welcome! I just started out about a year ago and have been trading ever since. I think the boards are always busy with trades since we are all in different seasons. Although I did notice less trading traffic in mid summer when we were all outside tending to our beloved plants. I would suggest to you to get some seeds of something that is a little more rare that you would like to have too -- take some seeds for yourself and trade the rest away. Or you might try the round robins- on the round robin boards, where you can send in a few pack of seeds and you get different seeds back. Some are ones you wanted and those you don't want you can always trade. Before long you will be overrun with seeds, and beware it is rather addicting. I would love to trade with you for some of your hyacinth bean seeds. I tried them this year for the first time and I just love them! I would be delighted to put together a nice big package of seeds for you for SASBE. Most of which are great for winter sowing because I started mine that way. Please let me know if there is anything in particular you are looking for, if I have it I'll be happy to send it along....See MoreWhens the best time to buy AV?
Comments (8)Larry, The local stores have unmarked variety an I'm sure they must be standards. My mother wants mini's thats the problem. I bought her these standard type plants and they get too big so she pawns them off on someone. So she brought up the mini's she saw at the market last year. Now they don't have them anymore. You snooze you lose! Yes Korina, There are two clubs that are pretty close...then again they're all close given the small size of the state. The one in Windsor is the one holding the show & sale I mentioned in my first post. All this never would have never happened if I did'nt decide to buy a violet and a pretty pot for my mom one day! I must admit, Its starting to wear on me now! Just like the day I bought my niece a goldfish! After doing al the reasearch for her on fish care I picked up a tank of my own, then a larger one and now I have five tanks!!!!!...See MoreWhen is the best time to take fig cuttings?
Comments (13)Last year was my first year ever I rooted cuttings in zone 5b. First batch taken in August semi-woody all rooted in less than 10 days. Second batch another variety taken first week in October, rooted in one week. Third batch taken in late November rooted in 7-10 days. Fourth, fifth and sixst batch were cuttings stored in fridge that were originally cut for third batch in late November. As they are rooted in February and March indoors, and and April (garden bed), they all took 2-3 weeks to start showing roots. Fastest rooting was in order: August-October-November etc. One former member of the forum explained that dormant or re-fridgerated cuttings have closed "pipeplines" compared to freshly cut cuttings, and need to re-juice and start rooting. These findings of mine confirm it, however the difference is of little signifficance in the big picture. Rooting in garden bed in late April will give you almost 90% success rate with least effort. However, overall growth and maturity of the stems will be behind compared to those started indoors. Choice is yours, but if you leave wood outdoors ower the winted open to deep freeze, you will have nothing to root. good luck...See MoreWhen is the best time to repot Plumeria and cut it back ?
Comments (13)I see you also asked on the plumeria forum so you'll get some answers from the experts, but meanwhile I'll tell you what I do. I don't have room in the house or the green house for potted plumerias so I uproot them, tie a plastic grocery bag around the root ball, and let them lean again the darkest wall in the overwintering/green house. I might give the root ball a little moisture once or twice. They loose all their leaves, but that's okay. They leaf out again within a few weeks. Some folks remove the leaves which is the probably the better way. You don't even have to use the plastic bag. You can bare root them and lay them on their side for the winter. I did that for years. Believe it or not they live, grow and bloom when repotted in the spring....See Morerockguy
