BOM 2010 - August

Welcome to the 2010 Block of the Month!

This is a no-pressure, no-structure, no-challenge, no-deadline group; we are just here to share, encourage and inspire. Any type, style and method of block construction is welcome. No rules; just fun quilting.

For those of you who haven't done a BOM, the idea is to commit to making one block each month and end the year with 12 completed blocks. It's a fun way to tackle long term projects or even mystery quilts. It can be organized - several websites offer patterns with a new block posted each month - or taken from a book - or even something you make up on your own.

You didn't have to start in January - feel free to jump in anytime! (And don't worry if you miss a month or two because this isn't a race!)

I'm going to put this in the August BOM because I'm still not 100% done with it! I need an opinion on how to finish the last part. I want to put the words "Holy Bible" in the middle of the album. I'm going to ink it. With the fabric so dark, it will not show up very well, so I'm going to stitch a "patch" with the words on top. My question is, what color fabric for the patch? My dh suggested blue. I'm also thinking a pale yellow or something like the background fabric? Any suggestions?

Just for the record - I noticed ~ and appreciate~ how perfect your little rows of dots line up :) ~ you did a great job! Your plaid looks good too - I think your attention to this detail makes this basket really, really pleasing. This snowman is my favorite block so far in this series ~Are you going to add the buttons / pompoms / etc at the end? It might be easier to decide then. I was so far ahead, but now I am behind :) I need to work on May's block.

More adorable snowmen, wonderful rings from Jayne and another beautiful block from Linda! Wow, good work this month! I've done nothing on my next block so when I post the June installment in a few days I will not be including a picture of my June block. Oh well, I've got 30 days to get it done! For those who have not gotten their block done this month: don't worry about it! This isn't a race and there's no timetable. Have you considered using a Metallic Gold Thread & embroider directly onto the Bible? I'd be scared ~LOL~ of messing up your beautiful block. If you want a patch, I think a plain ecru - something to not detract from the rest of the applique-sort of a pleasant surprise to read the script.

Jayne - your series is going to make a beautiful quilt. As always, your fabric selections is perfect.

I hope to get a block done this month.

I think that a narrow piping around the Bible block in the yellow of the stirps would be very nice. I assume you are turning under at the dark markings.

lafonda_ranch, I don't see why using a BLACK marker (designed specifically for quilting, of course) wouldn't show up. I assume you're planning to put it on the spine of the book, right? Just make certain that none of the lines are too thin, which would cause a problem with showing up. Just make them a tiny bit thicker than 1 line of the penstroke and you should be okay, IMHO.

Ok, here is what I came up with a few days ago. I'm actually pretty happy with how it came out. I didn't think the black pen would work, but it did! So, I call this one done :-)

I like the results. I think it turned out just great. Everything blends in very well.
I wish I had choosen more traditional blocks. Maybe next year.
