a suggestion concerning resale of childrens clothing and lead
Comments (25)As I understand it, thrift shops etc., will still be restricted from selling recalled toys, etc. . . that's probably a good idea but how will it work out in real life? I work for a nationally known donations re-seller and we already check every donation against a list of recalls. It's gotten to be a huge burden because so many toys are recalled, but we have text lists as well as photos of the recalled items posted at the sorting area. Inspectors make the first sort, but anything that might be on the recall lists, like toys and some appliances and children's clothing that may be more than a few years old, is also checked by a supervisor. Recalled items go to a shredder/compactor so they can't be sold. We take this very seriously and every thrift shop or used merchandise shop should. I can't speak for small, local stores but I hope they are just as careful. Even with the changes it looks like we may have to stop reselling toys. Clothing that has no metal (buttons, for example) should be OK. The changes allow for items that are only made with natural fibers, like cotton, silk or wool, to be sold without testing so those of you who make quilts or similar items are OK. Because testing labs have to be certified and inspection equipment has to be calibrated periodically, companies would not be able to do their own testing. Any thing to be tested would have to be sent out to a certified testing facility. There's another good discussion about this same topic on the Quilting Forum. I included a link to that post below. Comments (3)This is a Green Mafia Rant!!!!!!! There has never in the 100 years or so of using CCA material in a gazillion out side areas....One Single case of anyone being hurt by it in Any Way!!!! One study before the give in by the treating indust required a child under 9 to eat a teaspoon of dirt right next to a cca post 3 times a day for 5 years to be exposed to the same risk as drinking 3 glasses of water a day from the city tap. The danger was a Total Hype with money from the left wing gansters. ACQ hasent been around long enough to know, its treated with high copper and a few unknown chem.So because the info is not around yet all I can say is its not OK to use it around Fish Life, they can handle cca but the copper in acq leached into the water will kill them dead. So thanks to the left wing, spotted owl, radical stupid, inviro Mafia thats what you got. Now should your Youngen chew and injest a large amount of acq material say several 2x4s well thats on you. Otherwize you just have to E-Mail the Left wing and see what they can do for Ya. MR person, you got the skills and the tools, build eveything that the Child could come in contact with out of steel...but dont use Glav stuff they could chew on that as well,,,so mabey Redwood Naaaaaaaaaa the inviro mafia hates that as well. Idea!!!! plant trees!!hang the swings/slides on them with hemp rope..Awwwwww Shi%% they dont like that either,,,well use some organic yarn.. anyway fasten all the stuff to the trees and compact dirt down below. Be sure and conduct a study on the Birds they may not like all that rope on the trees, could be a bad thing. Man...Dont worry about it,,ghessss build the thing out of whatever your comfi with none of the wood products for sale local are going to hurt your Youngens. Comments (4)My local Home Depot had the rubber mulch, but it was almost $12 a bag. Yikes. I went with large pine bark chunks (they dont get caught in shoes), but have not seen a mold problem as you have had. You could always spray a little bleach and water on it, but that is beside the point. You could use sand, it is cheap (like mulch at about $3 a bag) and works well. There is always the option of just grass. The swing set itself makes little difference if "redwood" or not. If your kid is making it sway, short of a double tower or anchoring it to the ground with deep footings or spikes, it will always sway. I am not sure what type of ground you are going into, but mine has a pretty wide at the bottom A-frame on one end, and I just spiked it to the ground. It only sways when I swing on the set (which is not often!). Good luck....See MoreSuggestions needed for old childrens puzzles
Comments (9)I like the table idea, and the gluing to MDF would look neat with a picture frame around it. All your puzzles sound neat and fun! As far as the puzzles that have different shapes you mentioned. I would coat them with diamond glaze or resin and make earrings and pendants. Have you ever heard of 'smuzzles'? I think that's the correct name they go by. Anyway they are small puzzles that all the pieces are the same shape. I saw them one time years ago at a educational type shop and how neat they were. Wish I had one now to make jewelry....See Morepilchard
