Taking Possession after Closing

I'm selling my home in NJ and moving to GA. Here, as soon as you sign all the papers at the closing you are the owner and take immediate possession of the property.

I was shocked to learn that it is "normal" practice in GA to give the seller 24 hours after closing to vacate. I wish I had caught this on the boiler-plate offer contract and asked to have it changed, but since I didn't, I'm stuck with the terms.

Can anyone tell me the rational for this practice???? I don't see any advantage to either party - how do you do a final walk-through if the seller's stuff is still in the house? Who legally owns the house during this 24 hour period? What would happen if there were a storm disaster or fire during this period?

I'm going to be sitting there for 24 hours with a full moving truck and crew, waiting to unload. It looks like my seller plans to take the full 24 hours before letting me take over.
