Welch, WV does anyone know anything about it?

I can retire in 23 months (but who's counting?) DH and I had always planned on buying a 5th wheel RV and travel full time. Now with the price of gas so high (I don't expect it to go down.) and DH's back has hurt the last 2 times we towed our camper we are looking for Plan B.

We accidentally found a house in Welch we both love and the price is right. I'm not usually one to buy another house when I have one but I think this might be the right thing to do now. I know it's a depressed area but we won't be looking for jobs so that is not an issue. It is 22 acres in the mountains which we love. It also has a price we can't ignore. We are leaving Saturday morning to go up there and will look at the house on Sunday. (It has an indoor pool).

So if anyone knows anything about the area, good, bad or ugly please share.

West Virginia is a beautiful state. It's forever embedded in my memory as having more damned tunnels than anyplace I'd ever seen. I had a terrible fear of them, but after going through at least 8 or 9, I did get over it. But the first 3 or 4 were terrifying. The scenery more than made up for it.

Looks like it is in McDowell County???? That is a VERY depressed area. I have never been but people from Morgantown who do research in the area suggest that it is a very close community and can be "uneasy" about new comers.

If you go north along I-79 an hour or so, let me know and we can have lunch!

Magnus, I've never heard of it, but it is lovely. From what little I found on your link and a google search, it's an exclusive to Style Roses. They don't list a breeder's code, just "repeat flowering rambler", and under type of rose it unhelpfully says "new or exclusive, rambling roses". Hmmmph. Of course you know all that, but it's rather mysterious. It looks as if it might be unregistered, a product (or accident) arising from a breeding program (or not) at Style's. It might be purposely bred, or just a random volunteer seedling. Your only hope is if they eventually answer your inquiry, though I'm always suspicious of commercial growers' descriptions anyway, lol. I suspect that it's so new, and so limited in distribution, that it's unlikely anyone on the forums has grown it yet. But you might contact Marlorena and see if she's heard of it. I have a $20 1x1 brand, which looks like the Leaf and RCA - just a notebook sized piece of flexible vinyl. It does have to sit in the window to get all of the local stations (because of the room site and where I want the TV in the room. Absolutely easy to connect and then have the TV scan for channels. MarilynC, you might like to have a Roku. No continuing fees beyond the initial purchase (anywhere from $25 and up, depending on the model - I have the cheapest and it meets all my needs.) Roku offers lots of free streaming channels, including news channels that would include Houston. Of course, they also offer other channels for a subscription price, which mostly run $5-6/month. Right now I am paying for Curiosity Stream and Acorn; for July & August I paid for Peacock Premium so that I could watch the Tour de France, The Tour of Spain, and some of the Olympics.

Most likely more 30’s bc i see this at top, which is i think authentic to older and is it super heavy? Could have been hand cut and welded metal vs production piece, just me guessing, don’t know much , noticed the top part though got me to thinking ?

Can't help you with that area, but I remember driving the state 10 years ago. Beautiful!

Per Janie_Ga-- cue up Deliverance. I'm sure it's beautiful though. I'd hate to move somewhere and feel "unwanted"

Have you read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls? It's her memoir and a wonderful book. She grew up in Welch. She didn't paint a pretty picture of it.

Thanks everyone for you input. After much discussion and sleeping on it we have decided not to buy the house. I think if I were closer to retirement we might reconsider but we kept thinking about paying for a house for 2 years that we couldn't live in it and decided it wasn't a good idea. We absolutely loved the house. It was 4162 sq ft.on 22 mountain acres. Indoor pool, spectacular great room, 4 br suites. Would have to buy appliances for the kitchen. They had resurfaced the counter tops and some of the kitchen cabinets with white glazed tile which I hate in a kitchen. That would have to be redone. Oh, did I say it was selling for $99,900?!!!!

With DH's past heart attacks and back surgeries I'm not sure about the level of care even though there is a new hospital there.

Just for the record I was born in Huntington, WV and lived in a little town probably less than 100 miles from there when I was a baby. My mother was born and raised in WV and my Daddy was born in Alabama but raise in eastern, KY not far from WV.

Just heard from the realtor. They have a contract on the house. Glad to know that before we drove all that way.
