Lori in N Utah or other horse-owning people....

Why do I hurt so bad when I ride a horse? My son seems to think it's because I tense up and won't relax. I thought it was just because I was out of shape, but I went horseback riding again today with the kids and I was miserable after about 15 minutes. My back, neck, legs, arms and hands were killing me and I couldn't wait for it to be over with. The first few minutes were kinda fun, then the pain started.

I tried to relax but my horse kept trying to wander off the path and eat stuff, which we were told not to let them do. So, he would then have to trot to catch up with the others. I thought he was going to get p'od at me for pulling his head up and telling him to go on so often. LOL! I thought I was going to fall off when we started trotting down hills too, which probably made me tense up so I wouldn't fall off. None of the kids were sore. My right leg even cramped up just before we got to the end.

The ride was supposed to be 35 minutes long, but ended up being nearly an hour. I thought I was gonna die before it was over with. I get sore every time I ride a horse (which isn't very often) but this time was really miserable. What do you think? Should I just give up ever trying to do it again?

My kids want to ride more, and I thought about going to a nearby stable that gives riding lessons. I'd like to go too, just to have something fun for all of us to do together, but not sure I can handle it.
