Is it even worth it to consider a pot filler?

I guess I shouldn't answer this because I'm not a pot-filler fan to begin with, but I'd say there's too much going on in that area to have one. For some reason the idea of the water and the microwave don't send me either, but I don't think there's an actual issue with it.

I say no, too, but I find potfillers in residential kitchens kind of silly. You have to watch the pot while it is filling, and you'll eventually have to cart the pot to the sink to drain it anyway.

Actually, I'm enamored with the pot fillers. I wouldn't get one because I have an existing house (I'm not doing a whole remodel) and it would be an exhorbatent amount of money and quite a project. However, if I was starting from scratch and it could be easily done, I'd do it.

I'm aware that the pot eventually has to be drained at the sink. But it DOES eliminate the first steps of the task. I wish we (as a family) could have done this for my MIL before she died. She raised 8 kids and still cooked for crowds up until the day she died. Always hauling big pots of water.

I think it's all relative to your budget. Can it be easily done at a reasonable price?

Not enough room with a OTR. And, it's cross purposes and styles. A potfiller is for a more "pro" kitchen look, and that does NOT say OTR. It says 1200 CFM chimney range hood over a 48" range.

sometimes there are considerations other than price.

even if i could afford it, and i was in a 10x9 kitchen three steps from the sink, i wouldn't want it. hell, if the contractor offered to do it for FREE, i'd say 'no thanks'.

one more thing is one more thing that can go wrong. and it's one more thing that takes up wall space and visual space. and it's completely unnecessary since the sink is only three steps away.

Having an OTR myself, I'd say leave the pot filler out. There's gonna be enough stuff going on in that area, especially with your OTR.

Also, I agree with Morton5's comment.

I have to throw in a no vote. It will just clutter the space IMHO. It was on my wish list for my kitchen but with a 30in range it was just going to look out of place.

I'm with the no group as well. The space will be crowded with the microwave above the range anyhoo (that's how they make me feel) and really...I do agree they sort of go better with pro appliances.

Pot fillers flow faster than regular faucets by the way, so they're not just to save on hauling water. I personally love them.

If you really need one in your heart...look at a counter top option that would be mounted to the countertop on the other side of the range from where the sink is. It would be on the edge...and not quite as crowded as what you're thinking now...but I still would vote no either way.

I wouldn't combine them either, with a possible exception of a deck mounted potfiller. I have one, but it's not something I couldn't live without. It also wouldn't be the first thing I'd give up, but my issue with your situation is that the two just don't mix.

I thought visually it would look kind of silly, especially in my tiny kitchen. I'm not sure I'd even need it in a larger kitchen unless the sink was a great distance away.

He likes to tinker and figured if he had the wall open he could "play" a bit with the plumbing. Nothing is ever "standard" in this house. He MUST pimp it in some way, shape or form...LOL

Now if only I could convince him to keep the hardwoods *sigh*

Get rid of the hardwoods??!! Why? I LOVE my oak hardwood flooring in my kitchen! Save the hardwoods!

I was going to do a pot filler in my medium sized galley kitchen because the 36" gas cooktop is along one wall, and the sink is on the other wall. I decided instead to install a food prep sink a few feet down the counter from the cook top. It will be much more handy and will allow me to use that food prep sink for food related chores and use the main sink for clean-up (not only handy, but helps prevent cross contamination between soiled dishes and/or cleaning products with my food products). Besides, I love the look of a fantastic back splash on the wall behind the cooktop and a pot filler would distract from that.

We're in NC also, the Raleigh area.

Right now the hardwoods are pretty shabby looking and he doesn't want to spend the money to refinish them while the kids are still really young.

I LOVE my hardwoods though, so he is going to compromise by putting in a laminate above the hardwoods. We can always go back IF we do decide to stay in this house.

The laminate is free for us so there is no cost vs. having to pay someone to refinish the floors...for him it's a no-brainer. For me, well I LOVE the hardwoods and I'd spend the money to have them done.

I'll pick my battles though, I'm sure we'll have many throughout this remodel :)

Unless he can get the pot-filler for free, he would still be paying a couple of hundred dollars for the faucet. Skip the pot-filler and splurge on something pretty elsewhere!

I have a pot-filler in a large kitchen and don't actually use it as much as I thought, so in your kitchen, it would definitely be unnecessary and probably look silly. Sounds like your DH is like mine and overdesigns everything!

I love my potfiller, use it many times a day in my 14' square kitchen over a 36" range. Still, I'm going to vote no in your situation because your space is tight & you have a lot going on in that area.

I don't think the potfiller has anything to do with the size of the kitchen or range. It's either practical for you or it's not. I never slip on water in my kitchen like I used to -- that's how often I used to schlep water to the range and that's how clumsy I was in transit! I love adding a little more water here and there over and over -- in addition to filling pots for rice or pasta or soup stock.

BTW, installation is not always pricey. My simple $90 faucet went into an open wall we were plumbing for a washer/dryer on the other side. YMMV.

But squeeze a potfiller under an OTR microwave? I think it would be awkward to use at best -- and I'm short. For me this would defeat the purpose of "convenience."

So, "no." As you hint, you may be remodeling again someday so maybe he can save the potfiller in his treasure bag for the next / last kitchen. Who knows how many gadgets will be available for marital disputes by then! Have you seen the new Blue Star wall ovens with French doors?????

I agree with what's been said above. I never understood the purpose of a pot filler for the reason that morton said above, you'll eventually have to cart the pot to the sink to drain it anyway, until it was explained to me thus:

A pot filler's purpose is not really to save the carrying the pot from the sink when making something like pasta. It's real use is for cooks who make a lot of things that need constant replenishing with water, such as long cooking beans for example. The potfiller then is handy for adding water periodically to the same dish easily.

Now, if you don't cook that way, to me, a pot filler is a novelty, and you won't really get much use out of it and you'll wonder why you bothered. So don't.

Incidentally, I use a pressure cooker to make these kinds of dishes so you add in all the water at once, and it takes a lot less time to make.
