Recommendations for 30' range and micro-hood)

Hi. We just boought our first house and are planning a remodel to update the small kitchen. We really like to cook but have to date survived on the old appliances in our rental apartments so I thought it would be neice to get some good stuff but we also have to deal with space constraints.

As such, we're probably going to go a 30" freestanding range with a combination microwave-hood above it. Based on reading here I'm thinking perhaps the Blue Star RNB 30" range but one concern that popped into my head is whether a microhood will be sufficient to draw the fumes that could come off of a 22K BTU front burner. Should I be worried about this? Are there are combination microwave-hoods that do a particularly good job as a hood? (Note: ideally we were thinking of doing a microwave that is also a convection oven since we won't have room for a second oven.)

My other question is about servicing the Blue Star in DC. I noticxed some people have had igniter issues, etc... What kind of warranty coverage is there for Blue Star and is there a dealer in the DC area that would service them under warranty?

Any other recommendations are welcome.

According to Consumer Reports, you will never get the kind of exhaust from an over-the-range microwave oven with range hood that you would get from a range hood without MW oven. If you are a "serious cook" and I think you are judging from your choice of range, you really need to think about a range hood that dumps at least 300 cfm (cubic feet per minute) of exhaust to the outside. Proper exhaust is the one thing that often overlooked. You'll regret it if you don't attend to this need right. Vent-a-Hood is one option; there are many others. Broan, for instance, offers range hoods with remotely located motors (in the attic, maybe), so they're not so noisy. Look for another place to locate your MW/convection oven. BTW, do you really need such a combination oven if your range contains a convection oven?

Thanks. The logic behind the convection/microwave combo (it doesn't have to be convention per se, just a regular oven) was to have a second option for warming, etc... so we wouldn't need our countertop toaster oven anymore and could get back that countertop space.

As for the hood, if we went for an under-the-counter Vent-a-hood would it be possible to mount a microwave above that or would it be so high up as to be unuseful?

we have a 30" range and went with a 36" hood because it worked with our space. the overlap just lets the hood 'catch' more of the fumes. Ideally there is overlap but it's not totally necessary if you don't have the space, imo.

I just purchased the GE Cafe package of appliances with a 30" range for my kitchen renovation. (pheww my first purchase ahhhhh!) My first of many question on this reno is....What hood do you recommend for a 30" range?. I have a clean modern taste. I will probably do a chimney style hood. I was looking at the XO - XOB 600CFM's. My brother swears that I have to get a (more expensive) remote blower for a hood. He says otherwise it will be too loud. Do you really think that is necessary? I rarely use the fan now on my existing kitchen with basic sears type range with microwave above. My Kitchen will be a lot more open to my living dining room area now...but this just doesnt; seem to be such a big deal to me am I missing something? Thanks this site has already been a huge help in Kitchen planning...I am excited to get the ball rolling and move on this kitchen : )

Recommendation for a reliable 30" wall mount range hood under 500 cfm

MUA requirements, based on the IRC, start with blowers rated over 400 CFM. Blower ratings are in free air, and not in a hood system, so such systems will have only 200 -- 300 CFM actual flow rate. If the aromatic cooking involves pan temperatures causing peanut oil to vaporize or smoke, then the flow rate into the hood should be 90 CFM/square foot of hood aperture, perhaps a bit less with induction cooking. So it might be apparent that your hood aperture can only meet the flow rate by being no larger than a few square feet. This will be inadequate to overlap the rising and expanding cooking plumes possible from all burners on most ranges and cooktops. And we haven't even addressed reliability yet, although this tends to be an issue with inexpensive hoods with pretensions to electronic grandeur, where simple controls would be fine. Note that there is always make-up air, and it exactly equals the amount of air that flows out of the hood system. Even without safety considerations, or code considerations, if you want to operate the hood system at its best performance level, natural MUA due to house leakage should be supplemented, even if it requires only a duct and damper into some part of the house, unless the house is extremely leaky or your environment allows for normally open windows.

Renovating a small kitchen with width of 30 inches above the range for range hood. Told the hood can’t touch the cabinets. Any recommendations or thoughts on what brand or size I should buy? If I have at .25 inch each side contractor says ok. Cabinets ordered. Thank you!!

There a several OTR units that have 300CFM, including Velos. I'm not sure 300CFM would be enough for that range, however.
