Love - love - LOVE the block this month. I think I could draft my own pattern, but for those who don't could you please provide a website address or a link to the pattern?

Can you please clarify something for me? Do you want the two black and white fabrics to have both black and white in them...one black background with white print and one white background with black print? No tone on tones?

Not that anyone asked, but my personal preference would be to keep consistent with mago's block and have all the fabrics be b&w prints with no tone-on-tone fabric; but that's just my preference, you should choose whichever you or the majority think would be best for the finished project.

Please note - there is a typo in Mc Calls assembly instructions : Step 2 - 2C is the black background - not the white! Follow the diagram. ( Disregard the 2C label).

Block #2 - same fabrics except reverse locations. Black background where the white background was in the 1st block. Same bright center block. I used a bright batik- like fabric that reads solid for the center.

Did Mago answer? Yes to the white on black and then the black on white. I think that'll be essential to pull this off with the feeling we want to achieve.

Vicky's black and white challange, and our lotto with all black and white blocks both opened eyes to the drama of that combination. I'd have never considered it before that happened, but love it now.

Okay I'm in for 2 pair (I know, I know: overachiever/showoff!) I've already looked online for some terrific b&w fabrics (on sale of course and with a discount because September is NATIONAL SEWING MONTH!), but I can't decide what I want to buy.... Had blacks in my stash but no whites w/black print.

This time, I don't know if I can feel those blocks in my house .... but I do have a friend whose home is decorated all in b&w (perhaps a nice lap quilt with pillows would be in order?????). I do love the pattern, though, so I'll have to see what it looks like when I get them done.

Hazelnutbunny, I'll get that address off to you this evening. You'll do fine with the points. Some directions are easier than others to get them to line up well. Many times, when I have a lot of triangles to do, I modify the pattern from working with little triangles, to using two squares, and seaming them down the middle and cutting off the waste to use later in a scrappy. Those bias seams are doosies. I also starch bias seams before I sew them and handle them carefully now. I was amazed at the play in them and always wondered why my triangles were out of shape and my points off. I'm still working on it too!

I also have to make a fabric run for this one, but thank goodness for fat quarters!

A tip I read to get pointy points - and it works if I've cut accurately and seamed a precise 1/4" - is to sew so the "intersection" crossing over the 2 triangles that make the point is facing up so you can see where the point will be sewn. Sew 2 threads to the right of the intersection, so when you press the pointy point isn't in the fold of the pressed seam and you also haven't sewn across the point with your stitching. Clear as mud,huh?
I did use starch on this block as I learned to do from this forum. I also pressed some of the seams open to avoid the humps. This really is an easier block than it looks.
This is the first block I haven't had to shop for!

Could someone explain using starch? I've never even used it before- on anything! Do you have to sponge out your blocks afterwards? Or does it matter if you leave it in?
I've never heard of doing that before.
It amazes me how wet behind the ears I still am! lol!

I keep a can of spray starch by the ironing board. I like to spray the pieces of material after they're cut and before I pin them together to sew and then press them flat. It really gives them the body they need to feed well with the 1/4 inch seam, and helps the fabric from stretching out of shape, especially if you are sewing along a bias edge. I don't like to starch them again after I've sewn them, preferring to let them have that little 'give' when you pull, in case you need to ease them to match against another piece.

No, you don't have to sponge it out when you finish. I picked up this trick on this forum and that's why I have hung around here for two and a half years, I was very green too and had just started quilting, although I have been sewing all my life.

Just thought I would give this a bump ~ after settling in from the long holiday weekend. Also the link to the new sign up thread for those that missed it.
It is a fun block to make ~ not to difficult and should have the right amount of drama reversing the B & W backgrounds. I hope to get my second one made in a few days.
